The Zemnian language is just German. In Germany, the Zemnian is English. And there are some DnD spells that do not require material components. Caleb cannot cast those spells without components because he doesn't have the glowy arms anymore. But there are still some he can cast with just a few arcane words and hand gestures.

So with the whole Vox Machina vs Mighty Nein thing. Vox Machina was kost of the Critical Roles first time playing DnD, so most of the characters are quite stereotypical/archetypal. I.e. dumb barbarian, edgy rogue, fuckboy bard, etc. But when they got to Campaign 2 The Mighty Nein, they were a lot more experienced and so they made a lot more nuanced characters

Me and I assume many fans completely agree on prefering the Mighty Nein over Vox Machina. Look, to some players/members, Vox Machina was the first time they ever played dnd so they had to "get their feet wet", and deliberately made characters where they didn't have to put too much into. It's just that they're such talented performers it still rocked. Travis Willingham created Grog because he thought it would be easy, then he got some confidence and made Fjord. (And he also voiced Mustang in FMA:B so the reference was 1000% intentional, even if it was Caleb doing the thing!)

Vox i liked a few things about it more(specific characters like scanlan/Briarwoods/Grog/and i liked the dragon villain theme) but as a whole i feel like the mighty nein cast is better and the story is a LOT more in depth(even back when it was a DND campaign).

Tieflings come in different subcultures based off of what demon they descend from (as I’m aware of at this moment) so blue Russian tiefling and Irish tiefling are same race but different ethnic groups

I don’t think Caleb was holding back earlier in the fight with the frog. It wouldn’t make sense—he needed that amulet. In DnD, some spells need components and some don’t, and we’ve already seen him cast without them a few times. However, there are spells that do require components, but don't actually cosume/use them up; you just need to have them on your person. Caleb didn’t have those components until this episode, when Nott gave him the pouch at the start.

Just finished the episode this was fucking elite. I also like this better than Vox Machina after only 5 episodes and I thought the show was gonna be trash because I really didn't like the trailer, I thought it was corny. Judging from the interrogation scene, hearing Sam Regal's voice coming from the new character i had no affinity for soured me on the show before I'd seen any real footage. In context it made more sense. Vox is still great but i'm gonna need them to come with the heat next season.

The Zemnian language is actually just straight up German with some different word and accent choices, it's not a language created for the show. The reason for that is because in the game, Liam (Caleb) spoke with a German accent and used German words for the Zemnian language. They could have come up with an entirely new language for the show, but I'm guessing they didn't because then they would have to change how the group name came about.

I've played Wizards and warlocks in dnd games before and each one requires a different kind of commitment. with Wizards you have to focus on prep time and planning for every eventuality because you have so many different options and don't know what you'll be up against. Warlocks are a lot more limited but depending on what patron you sign up with, can give you a lot of unique if limited powers to work with, so you have to be very conservative with what you choose to go all out on, but you recover your powers within an hour vs the Wizard, cleric, druid or bard needing a full 8 hours rest. I love seeing Wizards get to let loose. a fully prepared high level Wizard is basically going up against a minor God. High level warlocks are no light weights either, as one with a high enough bond with their patron, can basically enslave you and make you their eternal puppet, send you through a portal through the nine hells, trap you in an illusionary daydream until you go mad and that's just the original three from the 2015 players handbook

The language Caleb speaks is just normal German. Fun fact: for the German dub, they instead use I believe an older form of German (I believe it's an altered version of High German). Nott does seem to have some kind of maternal instinct. We saw how desperate she was to help Toya and how devastated she was when she died. That maternal instinct leads her to comfort those in pain or distress, even when Fjord puked all over her or when turning in Caleb would have gotten her hella rich. They've only been travelling together for a short period of time, but as far as Nott's concerned, Caleb is her baby (even if he's a full grown man in his 30s by now lmao). If you're unfamiliar with how D&D works, Caleb's magic can be confusing. Spells in D&D required one or more of the following things - a vocal component, a somatic/movement component, and/or a material component. Some classes can circumvent the material component by using a spellcasting focus, but Liam O'Brien (Caleb's VA) meticulously chose to keep track of material components to power his spellcasting. Some spells with material components consume the component, meaning you have to keep restocking it (like the Lumino beetle bile Caleb stole). Others you simply have to have the material on you. During the fight with the Devil Toad, he had no materials except the few vials of Lumino beetle bile so his ability to cast spells was SEVERELY limited. Additionally, it's implied he used to be super powerful in the past, able to use high level spells. However, his experience killing his family broke him mentally. Owelia says he spent time in a sanatorium - an insane asylum. His skills would be severely rusty after that and he most likely represses some of his magic as a result of his extensive trauma. He was not in his right mind when he was roasting the fuck out of Owelia so he definitely lost control of both himself and his magic, hence why he suddenly was using super powerful spells.

The characters are more fun in the M9, but I do thing C1 was a better campaign overall. That being said, in show form, M9 seems far better paced than Vox Machina. They took what they learned from season to season and continue to refine their craft.

I think the main reason for the disparity in Caleb's power between the previous episodes and this one is mental. It should be obvious by the end of this episode that he has extremely severe PTSD from his time as a Volstrucker, so I think(emphasis on think, this is not a spoiler as far as I know) its a kind of mental block that's holding him back. The entire situation with Owelia was for sure extremely triggering for him, and I think he started tapping into his old training/habits(especially during the interrogation) and then she pushed him over the edge and he just snapped. Also he is using material components in that scene, it just happens really fast because of the interweaving of the past and present. As for him just kind of wailing on her with the fire towards the end, its possible that it was a single casting of a spell that he was just shaping and manipulating(though no specific dnd 5e spell at this level fits that aside from maybe control flames, but they've been kind of fast and loose with game mechanics which I get for a show). Regardless, as someone who dearly enjoyed CR campaign 2, I am absolutely loving this show and I think this episode was phenomenal

... Owel was paralyzed initially and then Caleb burned her which allowed her to move enough to break the amulet. If he waited he could've searched her himself And I get that Beau interrupted him but he literally kicked Owel'$ chair on the ground because he got mad and was about to kill her when they were supposed to be getting intel all while choosing not to communicate. Idc about their tropes, I know she's hot headed but he also got riled up and wasn't communicating. All he had to do was lie temporarily or just give a half truth. He chose not to do that.

As a fan this is really fun to see, because the childhood scene for Caleb isn’t something you saw in the campaign. Which is crazy cuz we have 500+ hours of content for campaign 2 (mighty nein). Mighty Nein is deeply loved group and possibly the most favored because they are ban of misfits who aren’t inherently good people, but learn to be “better” not good people. Also they had the best character development and best played characters.

Technically the language caleb speaks is a fantasy language called zemnian. However, Liam (his VA / player) always used actual german as his interpretation of that language, so they speak actual german. As a native german speaker I can understand all of it, although some characters have quite an accent.

I understand what you're saying but even as a "I don't really complain about adaptation changes to streamline the narrative" person, it does suck as a Yasha fan? Particularly the absence of the close Molly/Yasha relationship and the very high likelihood that they're going to make her be the catalyst for The Incident, which will earn her a lot of vitriol from non-CR watchers, probably. We only have eight episodes, after all. I would disagree, Caleb isn’t entitled to give everything about himself away. He told her that she’s trying to divide them with doubt, and Beau indeed did fall for it. And as the one from the previous episode calling everyone amateurs, that was a pretty amateur move. However I will say as someone who has actually watch this whole dnd campaign, I know why they are going in this direction, in which I won’t spoil. I was just responding to Roshi blaming Caleb, when Caleb was trying to keep them focused. You should never take your eyes off your enemy.

Part of why The Mighty Nein feels so strong is because Vox Machina had to find its footing first. Even though both campaigns are great, Vox was the cast’s first real D&D game, so the story naturally started flat and leaned more into the “game” side of things. By Campaign 2, they had more experience and confidence, and it shows. this feels heavier, and the story feels like it’s being lived rather than played.

from a german native speaker: Liam O'Brien (Caleb's VA) speaks understandable german, but sometimes (for me at least) with outdated vocabulary that's not "everyday german", but more old-school; the mum & dad (a bit less) at the beginning actually sound like native speakers, but both are speaking legit german furthermore, Trent speaks way more fluent german in this episode than in the previous ones - there he sounds more like what foreigners think german sounds like (if you know what I mean)

Yeah I’ve also watched the campaign 3 times, and Caleb didn’t need to give anything away about himself but he certainly translated what she was saying. He made it look like he was hiding something and he didn’t have to. Beau wasn’t asking for much here and Caleb wouldn’t budge at all. Do I understand why he wouldn’t? Yeah of course. Do I understand why they write the scene like this? Yeah obviously. They were both in the wrong because they both need to learn to trust each other. Also to your last point, Caleb also took his eyes off her, not just Beau.

Yeah, as someone who runs D&D games I totally understand. Everyone's first couple of characters tends to be copying someone from a show or book or anime and that's cool! It's a great game for getting to pretend to be your heroes even as a grown ass man or woman. Then, after you have a few campaigns under your skin you start thinking, "man, I really liked that warlock my friend was playing...but I'd do it like this." That's why roleplaying games are so rewarding. You start as a player, sure, but you before long you are ALSO the storyteller.
