The physics and engineering in this episode was hilarious. She should have been cooked alive and the design of the generator doesn’t make any sense. Also, how is the water being heated? A geothermal vent or something else on the surface?

No clue, it's an older film, and kind of flew under the radar unless you're a big anime fan, so its a possibility. Still one of the best hand drawn animated films ever created, IMO.

If your how question is about how the characters don't know, it is a major plot point that the inner workings of the Silo and much of the world is information that's withheld from the residents (The blueprint you see of the Silo in the first episode was illegal information). They know it comes from outside and nothing more because you can't leave the Silo to find out nor can you come back to share any info. The more the show progresses you will learn just how little they know about anything I mean they don't even know what cameras are (in ep2) lol I doubt they were taught about geothermal vents.
