This was a crazy first episode. I don’t want to be the cynical guy but I hope this is not a ‘carried by the animation’ show cause I feel like there is a very generic power fantasy story hidden behind all this gorgeous sakuga. Will be tuning in to hopefully be proved wrong, the world building at least has me interested for sure.

Pretty common trope (idk if thats the right categorization) to start with a loner character with a dark past already going out and about in the world then slowly leaving breadcrumbs of the past events. Honestly I wish the ending scene showing what happened to Xylo opened the next ep or something and this one stopped right when Kivia said who he was. But feels like they wanted to make this like an epic movie or something but I also see what you’re saying!

Yeah to be honest the very first 15 minutes were really really really cinematic and alive and everything felt so ambitious not only animation wise but the way it was built up and just how the little details in the surrounding, the setup for the premise was set it was all really complex and then toward the demon fight and the sentencing slowly a feeling started creeping in of "oh will this be glorified harem slop?" In a shield hero kind of way which also started off SOOO strong and yet fell off so incredibly hard. I am hopefull and I dont know anything about the novel but man I really do hope it is a rich and organic and geniunely masterfully written fantasy world like mushoku tensei.

I actually don’t think it’ll be a harem, I never got that vibe but I think starting off this insanely bombastic is like.. well where do we go now, you either keep one upping yourself into insanity or things slow way way down and then you lose the smooth brains who are just here for hype and aura, it’s tricky but I’m interested in seeing if it keeps the momentum. At the very least I like Dotta and Teoritta playing off the MC who is just like.. teetering that line of super edgy guy who can do everything

I definitely think some ish is up. Because Senerva had the same blue and red eye as the 47th Demon Lord’s tail eye thing. So either the demon lords WERE former goddesses, or maybe that’s a mark of them turning? The church is definitely up to some sketch ish. The question is as usual, why? Do they want to bring on like, the end of times? Are they actually wanting to turn more knights into Hero’s? This was such a strong first ep and I really do hope we keep the momentum for the rest of the season.

Kivia is a complete and total idiot. Sending the goddess in a detached force was the height of stupidity. The best play was obviously to contract with the goddess and act accordingly. The goddess and her knight would’ve been much more mobile and capable of both fighting and retreating should the worst happen. But then Sheera’s idea about purposely getting a goddess corrupted. I wonder… was this Kivia’s idea? Or did someone put a bug in her ear?

The animation is fire, and the twist on the hero archetype is a novel idea but tbh I still need to see the plot develop more to decide if this is actually worth the hype. There have been wayyy too many "hero-vs-demonlord / edgy-protagonist-gets-wronged-and-is-salty-about-it" fantasy animes in recent years and the concept has become way over used.

I assume the Knights arent allowed to bond with a Goddess on their own accord, so Kivia sent her away back to the Fortress to keep her out of harms way. But seems like that one guy at the beginning with the convoy set them up which is why the Blight was behind the frontline able to ambush the detached force. Afterall she said the whole reason the knights wanted to fight the Lord head-on is to give the Goddess time to be retreated. The biggest question would be why a inactive Goddess was even that far up the frontline. I dont think Kivia is at fault, se seems to be that typical follow rules by the book archetype but wanting the best for her kingdom. Someone from the Temple is probably an OP

I agree on your take for SOP when it comes to the goddesses, but captains are allowed to make emergency decisions when in the field. Xylo and Kivia have said that. It’s what Kivia said to justify her disobedience of Command. I just feel that the appearance of a Demon Lord and the extenuating circumstances justifies that kind of action. Having the most important weapon in your arsenal being a sitting duck when you’re army is being slaughtered just doesn’t make sense. If the weapon in question can move, then having it locked in a box instead of helping its own escape makes even less sense. Granted, there may be reasons that haven’t been explained physically preventing Kivia from contracting with her, so this is all just working off my own current knowledge and perspectives. But, yes. I didn’t think about it while watching the episode, but all of this definitely smells worse than the typical political backbiting of armies and officials wanting more power. In fact, I find it odd that humans seemingly can’t be corrupted by the Blight. They can certainly be consumed by the slime mold, but not become demons themselves, like everything else does, including goddesses.

Also I just wanna curb everyone's expectations moving forward. While yes this show has been graced with the talented animators that worked on MT (mainly S1), please do not expect nuanced story telling. It will have great action, but if you're looking for something similar to MT, AoT etc narrative wise this won't likely be it after going through the LN. Nevertheless, I don't doubt that the adaptation will be a good one so if you're fine with that the we'll be having fun with this one.

Idk how anyone is even getting me "hating" the show from my comment? Like I said above this should be an enjoyable action show and I'm all for it. I'm just stating facts from even other fans based on how things have been portrayed even past where the anime will get to, hence why I said curb your expectations. The story will not be comparable to stuff like AoT, Vinland, Orb or even MT (since people like to hate on Rudy so much despite how amazing MT's story is) if that's what you're looking for, but if they can keep up the production then also like I said, it will be a fun action flick with a decent story still. Nothing wrong with that. Absolutely absurd for anyone to even think this was a hate comment. If anything I don't want people to put up extremely unwarranted expectations and then complain that they get something that they don't like later down the line. That has happened way too many times resulting in some shows getting unnecessary hate because they didn't go how viewers wanted to.

Hmm the storyline seems pretty basic. Both I and the gang guessed the entire setup by the midway point. The animation is fire though. Not fucking with the loli element at all. I generally don't trust anime to handle little girl characters respectfully. I'm only left with a couple questions like why is Xylo the only guy who knows this level of combat and using seals? Maybe he's just especially nasty at combat by nature or something which would explain why the clearly demon-adjacent Powers That Be wanted him out of the way, but no excuse given for absolutely no one else using magical seals in their combat in this episode. So far this show is "just ok" to me.

It hasn't been established how Xylo's seals work or where he learned to draw them. It's premature to assume there is no reason for no other person in that scenario to be using seals like him when we have no idea how Xylo, himself, is evening doing what he does.

Well yes, I know it hasn't been established, I said I have pretty much only that question left. As it stands with what we currently know, there's no reason why he'd be the only combatant who knows how to use magic. Along with why he's the only competent and agile knight we've met when we've seen dozens of other knights in the first episode alone who have the endurance and proficiency of a red shirt™️. Considering he's a former knight who - if inspired by historical knight training norms - received training similar to his fellow knights, the discrepancy is odd and will need to be explained since without it Gary Stu territory is near. I'll give it a couple more episodes to see if it hooks me.

I've also seen that phenomenon of people putting really high expectations on shows just because of the first episode and then getting disappointed and hating on a show that didn't promise what they thought it was going to be. We saw this with Oshi no Ko, Vinland, etc. Tbh, this show feels a bit lackluster. I'll watch it when I'm bored.

I think there's probably a stigma around carving the sacred seals into your body. The fact that the higherups made up the reason that xylos went on a rampage as a result of using the seals carved into his body makes me think that it is at least a popular opinion. Afterall it'd be stupid to use that as an reason if everyone knows that's untrue. I guess it could also be dependent on the squadron. Kivia's squadron just aren't the guys that use seals, they're the ones that use the thunderstaffs and thunder ballistae. Might be quite time and resource consuming to teach each and every soldier to fight using seals carved onto their body. So different squadrons have different specialities. Since the seals are referred to as sacred, carving them on yourselves could be seen as blasphemous and that's why xylos is the only one who has it and the higherups let that be because of his prowess and his pact with senerva. Well until they decided to get rid of him. But yeah the holy knights are quite the frauds - getting completely dusted while xylos goes on a killing spree. I'm hoping that there are actual holy knights that are actually strong and competent. It seemed like Xylos knew of kivia being stupid or a bad commander because he called the knights stupid after learning that they were following kivia. So I do hope it's just kivia and maybe a few others, not all of them. Another thing I wonder is why did the higherups wipe out xylos's squadron. I'd imagine a goddess would be such an important asset and to intentionally send her to her death sounds such a bad tradeoff for presumerably wanting to get rid of xylos. There's no way they thought senerva would survive. I do also hope that Xylos will die rather than live through eveything. Would be a pointless concept if he doesn't die. Would also be nice to explore his loss of memories and sense of self.
