It's not something super spoilery because I'm pretty sure his name will be revealed soon anyway, but the Saber this time around isn't King Arthur. They were just trying to summon her but got someone else instead. The reason he wields 'Excalibur' is explained later.

The Saber Class isn’t always Arther or a variant of them. The Saber you guys know is pretty iconic and the one they used for the main series for narrative reasons. Since FATE/Zero was a prequel to Bladeworks and the movies were just alt versions of it, they used the same Saber, as they are the same narrative and used the same relics to summon her. In this case they didn’t seem to use a relic so they got a different Saber from the one we’re used to seeing If you watch other Fate series tho, like Apocrypha or Grand Order, there are other Sabers used

No not all sabers are connected to arturia this saber who is king Arthur is his own entity. She summoned the male version of the king arthur legend. Some will def go into detail more about the specifics but bottom line is a lot of the servants in the fate verse can be summoned as a man or a woman.

So the classes aren't always a specific person. A heroic spirit just has to fit that class to be able to be summoned as one. (ex: heracles can be summoned as a berserker because he goes mad in one of his myths) It is just the man who started the summoning specifically was trying to get king arthur. whether he succeeded or summoned a different hero you'll have to wait and see.

They’ve got the wrong idea about the King Arthur stuff, but I can see why they made the mistake, they’ve only ever seen Artoria summoned as Saber. Even in Zero and Stay Night.

Strange fake is kind of an amalgation of references to other fate stuff and even when you know them, it doesn't necessarily stop being confusing (doesn't help that an anime necessarily will cut stuff that serves to explain in the novel due to limits on what they can cover), but a good bit to catch for now would be this: remember the kid that was with iskandar/alexander the great in fate Zero and got a traumatic, but arguably character building loss? That's the "Lord El Melloi II" guy with black long hair that was speaking there, after zero he basically went on to, among other things, become a ridiculously influential teacher that basically is constantly producing geniuses in spite of him being not that skilled because of genetics, flat being one of them. The war was kinda the turning point on his life, and that's also why you can catch him here being ridiculously pissed at someone using a grail war as some kind of show

This is where I swear to you, revealing the name of a servant isnt a spoiler. Why? Because unless you are intimate with the actual historical figure, knowing their name in this particular franchise actually means nothing especially to TypeMoon casuals like the Roshigang. This is King Richard y'all. Spoilers? What'd I spoil exactly? Do you know exactly who King Richard is, his accomplishments, his lore to a T? No. Nobody knows who Takeru is in history but wanna avoid spoiling his name in Samurai Remnant as if the average anime watching American know who Takeru is. Y'all can say this is King Richard. But to answer one of them, no, King Arthur is in the majority of Fate series but not all of them. You may have forgotten but in Episode 0, they said that there was not going to be a Saber because the ritual they used was imperfect. America is trying to create their own holy grail war by imitating the rituals of old wars. A Fake grail war, basically. However they just summoned a Saber class at the end there when there was not supposed to be one. There is something up with that because they shouldn't be able to just summon an extra servant like that.

On the saber thing Essentially heroes are summon from the throne into containers, King Arthur/artoria is a saber doesn’t mean she/he is the only saber the class isn’t defined by one person if at some point in history you wielded a sword you’d be considered for the saber class example being Julius Cesar. Asking them to do that is way too much homework for a casual Fate fan. Most the arcs between the start and Babylon aren’t even adapted to anime. And I doubt they’re gonna look at recaps on YouTube. I don’t think they care that badly about having the definitive optimal viewing experience. It’s okay if they’re confused here and there

Fate is a very cool but very complicated series Roshigang. Y'all are casual surface level fans so we really gotta give grace here. Saber class servants dont always relate to Authorian figures. Julius Ceasar is a Saber class who can be summoned. Hercules can also be summoned as Saber class if conditions were met. Even Artoria/Author can be summoned as a different class outside of Saber too. Cu, the Lancer y'all loved, can be summoned as a Caster or Saber. Diarmuid, the Lancer from fate zero, can also be summoned as a Saber. Gilgamesh himself can be summoned as a Caster or Ruler or Lancer or Saber too. So the summoning system is very big and open to all historic figures if the summoning conditions make it so.

I’d say it’s very helpful to have seen the other Fate shows just because they give you the groundwork of understanding th HGW, but you don’t NEED to watch them. The hour long special they watched a while back is episode 0. You should definitely watch that before episode 1 since it’s an hour long prologue of sorts.

What’s the point of lying? At no point is the story ever trying to make you think this is a male King Arthur. The only question is why this guy who isn’t King Arthur is using Excalibur and it sprinkles in clues to figure out who he is if you know the specific history. It’s supposed to mirror Shiro and Artoria since he wasn’t a proper mage so she couldn’t reveal her true name to him. Why do y’all keep trying to mislead them when Roshi even figured out on his own that this isn’t King Arthur?

So to clarify, Saber is simply a class for primarily sword-wielding Servants. They can be a wide variety of people, not just related to King Arthur. Though it is true that the dude was trying to summon Arthur, this Saber is not Arthur. Arthur, or “Artoria”, was just the Saber summoned in Zero and Stay Night and obviously the most iconic one. As for Lord El-Melloi, the long haired mage in the Clock Tower, that’s actually Waver, the kid who was Rider’s Master in Zero. That’s why he’s so frustrated that these guys are making the Grail War into a game. I would def recommend rewatching episode 0, since it seems you’ve understandably forgotten stuff in the last 2 years, like the wolf being Lancer’s Master

Quick and important points might’ve forgot from the episode that came out 2 years ago(Free of Spoilers): -All 7 servants shown in the special along with their masters. -The woman servant we saw was Assassin and her master was the Jester guy who was killed in the same way, but then switched his heart out and changed his appearance. -Flat summoned Jack the Ripper(Berserker). -Police Chief with Caster and also used Caster to somehow give his police force Noble Phantasm weapons. -Gilgamesh(Archer) master is Tine and Enkidu(Lancer), from the same lore as Gilgamesh, master is the wolf fought last episode. -The couple with the black spots on them were the parents of the kid who was the master of the death curse thing. -Saber and his master briefly seen end of last episode, same scene shown this episode. -The dude with long hair at the Clock Tower called Lord El-Melloi II is Waver, Rider’s master from Fate Zero and teacher of Flat. -Francesca, Police Chief, and Faldeus plotted the current war for whatever reasons and switched it from a fake one to a real one by summoning Saber/7th servant because if the rules are broken too much, especially early on, the system starts to correct itself by summoning a Ruler(special class) which they don’t want. -Grail war system is based on problematic 3rd grail war system from Japan(Fate Zero 4th. UBW/HF 5th).

If you want the shortest easy path to understanding it pretty well, watch Zero, UBW, and the Heaven’s Feel movies. Apocrypha wouldn’t hurt but it’s not that necessary. Then you start with the Strange Fake Whispers of Dawn special. You’ll understand about 80-85% of the story with just that. If you want to get like almost everything in the most definitive way, then you gotta read the Stay Night Visual Novel, read Hollow Ataraxia, watch Zero and Apocrypha, and get through at least the first like 8 chapters of Grand Order either in the game or anime adaptations. Even then there’s some niche stuff you may not get lol. Only do this if you got a lot of time and want the most definitive experience

Fate is one of those series that’s definitely hard on newcomers, especially if you’re only into anime, since not all the material has been properly adapted. But when you do sink your teeth in, it’s genuinely one of the most interesting and engaging series out there, especially when you’re a big history/mythology fan. Strange Fake is especially rough because it’s kinda this amalgamation/fanfic that references almost every major Fate sub-series. If you want to understand most of what’s going on without spending too much time reading visual novels, start with Zero, then Unlimited Blade Works, and then the Heaven’s Feel trilogy. You’ll understand the vast majority of what’s happening in this show. You may still enjoy the show anyway, but prepare to be lost fairly often.

I would recommend watching a small few minute recap of episode zero just to help jog your memory since some of the confusion is more to it being a long time since episode 0 aired vs you guys not understanding (give yourself more credit!) but here are some corrections/recap info: RECAP: - To summarize some background info, you could say Fate/strange Fake takes place around 5 years after when Unlimited Blade Works happened, technically it's an alternate timeline but that's just to give you an idea when it takes place since there are events and characters from UBW and Zero that make appearences, like Waver for example (master of Rider in Zero) who's Flat's teacher and you can see Rin (UBW) in one of the photos in Waver's classroom. Basically just think of the Fate franchise/Nasuverse as Marvel or DC where there are a bunch of storylines and runs that take place in an ever expanding multiverse. - IIRC Faldeus (Dude who kept gunning everyone down) used data from the Third Holy Grail War to try and replicate it in Snowfield but since that grail war had lots of problems it ended up resulting in a faulty holy grail war but the hope was that in gathering enough magical energy from the summoning of six servants (Saber class wasn't included because it was faulty) it would activate the leylines (points where magical energy can gather in the land) and transition Snowfield into a suitable city with enough magical energy for a real holy grail war to take place which I guess worked considering Saber ended up being summoned. Faldeus is also seemingly working with Orlando Reeve (police chief) and Francesca (crazy chick) according to Caster. CORRECTIONS: - The Assassin (the one who killed the mage that kidnapped Ayaka) was summoned already by Jester Karture (White haired dude who was initially killed by Assassain but swapped hearts) in Episode 0 so she's his servant, the Assassin is basically just taking out any mage looking for the grail bc it goes against her beliefs while Jester wants to break those beliefs bc it would prob get him horny. - If you remember in Ep 0 some dude was beating up a Chimera he was trying to use as a catalyst to summon Enkidu (green haired servant who fought Gilgamesh in episode 0) and in the process the Chimera ended up summoning Enkidu itself and became a master. - The place shown in Ayaka's flashbacks and briefly mentioned by the dude who kidnaps her is the Einzbern Castle, if you remember in the other Fate's the Einzbern's are homunculus who are basically used as vessels for the Holy Grail (Irisviel in Fate/Zero and Ilya in Unlimited Blade Works and Heavens Feel) - Artoria (King Arthur) isn't the only possible servant to be summoned in the Saber class, it's just that in the anime adaptations you've seen she is the only person to have been summoned as a Saber.

I hate being one of those people who makes a big fuss over the watch order but I do feel like it's important to note that Zero is a prequel and was intended to be watched last to provide context and background info to the major plot twists in UBW and HF, it's just that Ufotable kind of dropped the ball by adapting Zero first, but honestly if it gets you interested enough in Fate to the point where you want to learn more and end up reading the VN all the more power to you, enjoy!

Quick important points whilst not spoiling important bits : - There are some comments in the posts below mine that have some details not revealed yet in the anime (for example whats happening in this particular holy grail war and why its called fate strange fake). - This is an alternate timeline of fate. This one specifically is considered to be very "fanservice" because the show has alot of refferences and integrations from type-moon. An example is Lord El-Melloi being Waver from FS Zero and whoever was paying extra attention, seconds were shown to some framed pictures and a hooded girl (named Gray) walking on the hallway. Those are refferences to the anime Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files (it was actually more entertaining than i thought when it released). Another example is the priest at the end and the quartet, which are a refference to a different series from type-moon. - In this timeline, the USA is trying to replicate the 3rd holy grail war from Fuyuki. Keep in mind, because that specific war had its problems on how the ritual was implemented and the US not knowing this, this holy war from Springfield will have its irregularities. - About your confusion on the saber class and Arthur Pendragon: the class itself is not tied to a specific bloodline or history; it's the legend of any hero that lived on earth and recorded through human history that ties him to a specific class. For example, if Roshi was known through history that he was a master at wielding the sword, then Roshi will be assigned to the Saber Class. Same if Lupa was known to be an artist, or dabble in witchcraft and so on, he would be assigned to the Caster Class. All these legends that are known by humankind are recorded in the Throne of Heroes. Imagine the ToH as a supercomputer that archived everything about every person noteworthy in history. With that info in mind, the ToH recreates the heroes and adds to them every detail written about their appearences, personalities, powers and noble phantasms. In episode 0 Gilgamesh said to his master something among the lines of "if my past self would've seen me how i am now, he would've commited suicide". In the anime Fate Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia, Gilgamesh was shown how he was back in his rulling days. He wasnt an arrogant tyrannical king as portrayed by humanity, but a wise, strict, responsible king who stated that him as a king exists to serve the people of Uruk. It's complete opposite of servant summoned Gilgamesh. Part of why he was like this in his youthful days is because of Enkidu aswell. Things like this can happen. I'd give more examples from the fate series where this kind of misinterpretations or false information stored in the Throne of Heroes reshapes some heroes, but that would be spoiler territory for other animes. THE REASON THIS SABER IS CALLED ARTHUR PENDRAGON WILL MOST LIKELY BE EXPLAINED LATER IN THE ANIME. - Regarding the assassin chick who got spooked by saber: If u try to remember the Heaven's Feel trilogy, the true assassin was using the same ability as the assassin chick called Zabaniya. The assassin from the trilogy is one of the leaders of the assassin organization called Hashashin, Hassan of the Cursed Arm. All the assassins from that specific organization discard their original identities and names when becoming the leader of said organization. And with each having a specific ability, they are given titles like the one aformentioned. Problem is, the assassin chick is not Hassan of the Cursed Arm for obvious reason but manages to use his ability (albeit if u paied attention, the original hassan of the cursed arm needs to touch u on the chest in order to project the heart and crush it, killing the target. The assassin chick literally gouges out the heart. And neither her arms malforms, it just comes from her back. It's a detail to keep in mind). Her master is the dude she "killed" in episode 0. The guy swapped his crushed heart with a new one and if u paid attention to the few seconds shown in this episode (red eyes, fangs) and how he sucked blood through the floor in episode 0, u'll understand that he is a vampire (or how type moon names him, a dead apostle). - Keep in mind that Francesca said she has seen several holy grail wars. - The 2 parents with the child who is the master of the shadowy figure: in episode 0 there were several details shown that unveils its identity. 1. The fact that it leaves black spots and death wherever he pleases. 2. During Gilgamesh and Enkidu battle, the shadowy figure immediately rushed to where the 2 were fighting at high speed. 3. Split second frames of several pictures that portray its nature. 4. The fact that Enkidu said something among the lines that the shadowy figure is an antithesis to what he is and a curse on top of that. Enkidu himself as u saw was able to bring life in the desert by sprouting flowers, grass, plants and so on. From these details alone u can deduce what class and identity of the shadowy figure is (which is kinda crazy). - If u remember in Fate Zero, Gilgamesh said himself in a conversation with Kotomine that he has only 1 friend. In episode 0, Gil sensed and went to battle with joy and a big smile on his face against Enkidu. He immediately pulled out Ea and opened the Gate of Babylon to a huge extent where countless blades were being shot. That should round up exactly who Enkidu is. I highly doubt the anime will give alot of context to Enkidu, because there's alot of background story behind him and Gilgamesh. What's important tho is that Gil was not holding back against him, even tho they were "playing". That should explain how strong Enkidu is. - According to the dude who was trying to summon saber and the flashbacks Sayaka has, she seems to be sent there by the Einzberns (typical portrayal of their family is the albino females with red eyes, them being homunculus). Good point about saber, the fact that when he used excalibur, u hear the roar effect. That sound was intended and is part of his identity. - I hope this anime gets as many seasons as it can due to its nature and explain the heroes, masters and the holy grail system, otherwise it might feel flat for the trio. They are not invested as some of us are in the type-moon universe and given how this anime is very fan service, its more directed towards the niche of where type moon fans reside and not to newcomers. Personally am very excited because there are very strong servants in this anime as opposed to fate stay night. There are multiple servants here who are interesting and strong enough to make even Gilgamesh fight seriously. And that is hype, because in the entire fate series, there are only handful of servants actually capable to make him go all out. (I am not taking shirou into consideration. What happened in UBW was a fluke; in a straight serious fight, Gilgamesh wipes the floor with Shirou).

The more I think on it, the more I believe the Roshigang should've watched Fate Apoc before even touching this. Though the two series take place in different timelines, y'all would grasp some fundamentals a bit better without all of us needing to write term papers for you to get a base understanding.

F/SN has very powerful servants. It's just old, and as with everything anime/video game related, power creep over the years took over. It also keeps the protag servant (Saber) permanently nerfed to the ground for plot reasons, whereas antagonist servants get infinite mana. Gilgamesh isn't so overwhelmingly powerful nowadays in Fate lore, there are many servants who can kill him. The whole point of the Fate power system is that everything is situational and anyone can beat anyone with the right conditions (nearly).

@Fernando for me it's the opposite because I consider Zero to just be far better in anime form than any FSN anime. FSN is intended to be a visual novel, and can't translate well to an anime without being a loose adaptation. But since they went with a very 1:1 adaptation (which doesn't work in anime form), it ended up falling very short of Zero's quality.

One correction: Gilgamesh in Babylonia was not a king who served the people. He is not completely different to Archer Gilgamesh either. In the actual game for FGO, Gilgamesh still believes that the people live in service of the king. That never changed. He just became less ignorant & reigned in his selfishness a bit to help Uruk prosper after he abandoned it for his quest for immortality. He never repented for his actions, they just got swept under the rug & his harsh treatment of his people mellowed out somewhat. In the age of gods, Gilgamesh is more of a neutral force but, if you put him in modern civilization, it'll amplify his worse traits like it did with Archer Gilgamesh.

As someone found guilty and sentenced to life in Fate without parole, it’s ok to be lost at the beginning. Not only of this Fate series, but basically any other. The show has already covered what it needs to (grail war in the US, multiple parties with different motives involved, this supposedly “Fake” war that shouldn’t have a Saber has a Saber, MC has mysterious background). No one ever says this, but each Fate anime is basically a mystery series. Who are the servants and masters involved, why are they involved, what do they want the grail for, who will “win”, and what does “winning” actually look like. You should know, the thing the average Fate fan loves most is to tell you how much they know about Fate (reddit bragging especially when they’re wrong), where you have to start the series or you’re doing it wrong (like it’s test you have to study for). You have questions. If you stick around, those questions will be answered. And if you still don’t get it, google it.

It’s a reading comprehension thing on the subs and it’s a bummer because I’ve seen a lot of other people mess it up. What Saber is saying is that King Arthur is his role model (“I swear upon the foundation of my chivalry, Arthur Pendragon”). I mean I get the confusion though Saber did use Excalibur. But what’s going on there will be cleared up in 1-2 episodes.

Generally u are right. I personally cant see how a serious gil would lose, given he is a divine type servant w/o weakness (like achilles or karna), and has a treasury with all the worlds prototype np. He can come up with counters even to other divine heroes abilities. Its kinda cheap, so we need plot and conditions to beat him.

Not sure about Fate/Strange Fake, but in Fate/Grand order the multiverse is a thing. You can summon different versions of the same hero across different timelines and worlds. Though, I am pretty sure this saber is a descendent of Arthur Pendragon.

FGO is a specific case though. Gilgamesh is still the strongest heroic spirit. It's just that now we have divine spirits, beasts, lost belt kings, grand servants, etc. None of that stops Gilgamesh from being the mightiest heroic spirit. Similar with Saber. She, along with Gil, have been buffed to hell & back to maintain the standings they were initially given.

That's not really true at all. He can't just manifest all those solutions instantly. Tons of servants can defeat and/or kill him. Especially in todays fate universe where there are numerous insanely op servants who could take him. It's also not a matter of power, its all conditional. Shirou beating Gil was just a bad way to show how anyone can beat anyone in this series. It all depends on matchups and conditions. Its not DragonBall where there's a power level meter and the higher one wins.

The 3rd holy grail war took place in 1939 in Fuyuki. Fate strange fake holy grail war takes place +70 years later, around 2009 iirc. Fate Zero and Fate Stay Night events took place earlier, with FZ being in 1994 and FSN in 2004. All of these are canon, hence why we see Waver here as an adult. If u go at 9:18 in the video, u will see a picture frame with Rin Tohsaka in it as a college student for after the FSN events.

It doesnt really work like that. Summoning a servant works by having a catalyst, which is an object that is directly tied to that servant. In the fate series, having like the scabbard of a specific legendary hero has a higher chance and is harder to obtain due to price and what not. Regardless of where you are on the planet, if u have that kind of catalyst, then u will get that servant. If u dont have said catalyst, u will summon a hero that comes from the legends residing in the nearby lands and that matches your personality and ideals. The only reason why Ayaka summoned this saber is because the holy grail ritual the americans implemented is faulty.

It is so good to have Fate back. I said this on the special that came out 3 years ago (crazy) but this story is an adaptation of a LN that is done by the author of Baccano and Durarara. I highly recommend reacting to those!! They're so good. They feel very Tarantino-styled as well.

I started as an anime-only and still haven't read the Visual Novel, but the path that helped me the most with understanding it is starting with Fate/Zero. Then Unlimited Blade Works (The Ufotable one with 2 seasons) and Heaven's Feel movies. Although Fate/Zero is technically a prequel, it's adapted from a Light Novel instead of a Visual Novel so there's a lot less cut content and offers clear explanations and a great cast of characters.

If anybody needs a more casual watch order for Fate before starting Strange Fake. Watch Fate UBW, Fate Zero, and maybe Fate Heaven’s Feel. These are the more modern ones that introduced a lot of people to Fate and provides enough info/context to understand what’s going on. The more optional ones are the original 2006 Fate Series, and The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II. 2006 is the default route of the original VN but can feel a little outdated and flawed as an adaptation, and the latter’s main characters play a huge role in Strange Fake, but that series is a huge shift from what Fate is known for and isn’t everybody’s cup of tea.

From what I understand, the heroes summoned are influenced by how the people view their legends. The Saber that we know, Artoria Pendragon, is just a different interpretation of the Legend of King Arthur from this Arthur. It’s how you get buff Alexander the Great, and bishie Gilgamesh, who are the opposite of those things historically.
