Lowkey maybe an anti-hero/morally grey type that challenges the beliefs of the group. Maybe there’s killings going on that appear to be the work of a demon but instead is by a human or elf. Emphasizing that evil comes in all forms not just the ones in horns…I came up with that on the spot mhm lets go

Genau was also the mage who was fine with a lot of test takers dying in the first exam to monster birds, which seems a bit weird given how kind and caring while still cold he seems this episode but with his view on first class mages being people who chose to put their life on the line it makes a bit more sense. Cool way to give a seemingly minor character some depth.

Untested belief and morality are simply strong opinions its when they face adversity and must be justified do they become a belief. Plus if you’ve lived his kind of life, most likely filled with hellish experiences dealing with demons, which is something expected of first class mages, its natural that overtime you become accustomed to that kind of life, to become jaded over time

Yeah, I remembered Methode just fine, but when Genau first popped up on screen, I mistook him for Richter (earth magic guy that was teamed up with Denken in the exam). I forgot exactly what Richter had looked like, but I had forgotten Genau completely.

Once again love how Frieren exemplifies showing vs telling in its storytelling. -Genau claims he has no attachment to his hometown, yet he is meticulously searching for survivors and ensuring they have a proper "burial". He goes out of his way to ensure the one dying survivor gets a peaceful death, he is so pissed off Frieren- an elf who has been fighting demons for decades mistakes his uncast spell as demonic. His memory of the last survivor is nothing remarkable or grandiose but rather a small, unremarkable moment that happened in passing- yet he still remembers it. -Then theres the small scene when Genau and Methode meet Frieren's team. Frieren using the bird capturing spell we saw in the first-class mage exam, Genau initially detecting only 1 mage then modifying it to 2 (showing both Fern's skill at hiding her mana and Genau's exceptional ability considering Wirbel wasn't able to detect Fern at point blank range). Methode instantly able to identify Fern which tracks since she was the one who successfully countered Fern's clone. Methode herself is also such an excellent all-rounder: -Superior Mana Detection -Barriers that not only protect but also redirect -Goddess magic to the point she can do priest like healing -Offensive Magic strong enough to punch through a defensive stone barricade -Hypnosis Magic -Restraint Magic
