It’s been a while since season 1, so a lot of people forgot, but that Tensen was the one that Gabimaru fought towards the end of the season, and nearly solo’d, even forcing them to transform, but he lost his memories in the process. So basically, Shion got mad lucky and was matched up with a Tensen that was already like, 70% dead and still trying to recover.

I see a lot of criticism of Nurigai's role but remember she has only handled a sword for 3 days so she really would be in the way and Shion is not going to let her get in the battle. My main criticism is Shion not utilising her tao to strengthen himself like she does towards the end, but you can pin that to him being a bit of a prude.
