To explain two things, one Julius and Anastasia are not related they just happen to have the same hair colour and Julius is the best knight, he is the greatest knight in the Kingdom and reinhard is the strongest person in the world (possibly even history) but in pure swordsmanship with no divine protections I'm pretty sure Julius wins. second the reason Subaru wondered why Anastasia cared so much about Julius is because remember that's not Anastasia it's Echidna so Subaru is wondering why does she care so much about him.

Julius has basically lost everything with people forgetting who he is. This fight with Reid is essentially his only way to prove himself as a true knight and not a self-proclaimed one like Subaru was back in season 1

So many parallels especially between Julius and Subaru. Subaru at the beginning of the series was unknown while julius was a respectable knight. Now, Subaru is well-known for his achievements while julius is unknown. Subaru knowing exactly how Julius was feeling impulsive and going for that second battle even though julius knew he wouldn't win. Subaru was alone with his despair back in s1 without having anyone to rely on while he was at his low point so when he saw himself in julius, there's no way subaru could leave him alone.

Very nice episode! Reid isn't kidding when he says he can't cut anything with his chopsticks. Before he learned swordsmanship he was pretty much a brawler, which shows alot in his fight with Julius. And him needing 3 months to learn how to fight a sword before sword saint became a thing shows how much of an issue he is. Julius is lucky he didn't die. Also, it's a very nice detail: Julius being beaten by Reid with wooden chopsticks, while in his past, Reinhart beat his father (the guy who taught him the sword) with a wooden sword. It just proves how the Astrea blood and skill didn't fade even in Reinhart's time as sword saint. Also, Reid is his ancestor, not descendant lol.

tbh while he got his ass beat, it's good to remember that this mf is genuinely strong, he is like, among the top 10 strongest people in the country, but the likes of reid and reinhard are simply just that stronger. Since he worked his ass off to be the "finest knight", and when he lost his name all of his achievements and bonds got lost, having hands was one of the only things that remained of his past life, so being owned like that hit him extra hard now. Anastasia is not family of him or anything (besides, anastasia is not in control of her body, and they all forgot about him, so the reason eridna got frantic trying to help him technically a mystery at this point), and if she got him as her personal knight is probably because he was genuinely a good choice.

Just wanted to say that Julius is also nerfed by not being able to make use of his spirit arts properly. Julius having lost his name can't make new contracts with spirits and only has 6 spirits who no longer know who he is and are really just sticking around because of his divine protection. That's why despite being a spirit knight you don't see him using spirits arts once in this episode.

I think it's more he's never been enough. Not that his teachers were pretending, or he's secretly trash. He's just always been a "good" Knight. Never great, never a legend, never a Hero, and most certainly not a Sword Saint. Everyone around him are these amazing legends, Emilia passed when he could not. Him and Reinhard grew up together. He only has absolute monsters to compare himself to, so he never feels good enough

There are just things that are too peculiar with this tower, bc what do you mean the first sword saint has only been wielding a sword for 3 months? Julius is Anastasia's knight from karagi (basically jp in this world) but he doesn't know what Reid had in his hand were chopsticks. Subaru even comments to the rest of the cast that it's the incorrect use of chopsticks, meaning that consuming food with sticks is something inconceivable in this world. Reid was supposingly meant to have passed from old age but he looked fine? we know that the sword saint power can bestow upon an astrea at any time so are we currently in a different point in time?

One thing you might have missed, and that I find very weird myself, is that Anastasia reaction was especially irrational for two reasons: 1. she isn't Anastasia strictly speaking 2.she shouldn't really "know" Julius, on a personal level, no matter who she is, as everyone forgot about him. I only watch the anime so I don't know, but I noticed in Re:Zero it's often details that seem weird like that which end up having a lot of meaning later on. I remember in season 2 everything that seemed weird at first had a meaning eventually, I have the feeling season 4 might be of the same kind.

Seeing this fight animated was both epic and funny cause Julius used the majority of his bag simply for Reid to treat him as if he was hitting him with 20 sets of "boy I oughta". What's weird is that the sword Reinhardt wields is known as the Dragon Sword Reid, and it decides whether or not to use it based on whether it believes the opponent is worthy. Julius recognized Reid, so if he wanted to know how well he would do against him, he could simply consider if Reinhardt drew his sword against him. The author has already confirmed that Reinhardt is the strongest person in history and that he can defeat Reid, so he is a good reference. It was heartbreaking to see Julius' sword training flashback because he is the strongest knight in the kingdom (with the exception of Astrea Reinhardt of course), but he was beaten so badly that he resembled Gon after killing Pitou. What probably cooked Julius even more is that Reid saying he got nothing and has no purpose here is true on so many levels. Anastasia can’t use magic so her using that just probably revealed that the person he’s ride or die for ain’t even by here. Besides Subaru, nobody remembers him, he has no family as he doesn’t even remember he has little brother thanks to gluttony, his contracts which makes up a good chunk of his skills forgot him, he practically has no hands against Reid making him useless in the tower, and since he’s been forgotten he’s probably broke and homeless. All he has on him is the fit he lost to gluttony in. He got it rough. Also, whenever you see those chopsticks and hear Shula use those English words just know that those things are foreign to this world and come from “our world”, which shows how multiple people like AL and Subaru have come to this world.

Those other sword guys they mentioned, we'll probably never see in this timeline. They only show up in other what if scenarios where Subaru makes different choices ( and is a villain ) where they do come into the plot in some way. Remember, Julius is nerfed right now. He's a spirit knight without access to the power granted to him by his contracted spirits (because they don't remember who he is). So he's just working off raw swordsmanship at the moment. But even at that, in the Royal Guard, he is second only to Reinhard. And Reid was the strongest of HIS time. He didn't even have all the crazy blessings Reinhard has, just raw strength and talent. It's a tough match.

It's a bit harder to communicate in the anime, but the bit at the end where Reid pencil sketches Julius is the first time he actually takes a proper sword stance. So basically up until now he's just been fucking around, but when he actually chooses to attack in a manner befitting a sword, the atmosphere literally warps and shudders around him due to the intensity of his power/skill, much like how when Reinhard actually drew the Dragon Sword in season 3. Another fun tidbit is that Reid is left-handed, and the entire time this episode he's only been using his right hand for the chopsticks.

The scene with Subaru and Julius reminds me of how Naruto and Sasuke used to bicker. Also why is Crunchyroll hellbent on changing the way bros name is romanized over the seasons. IIRC prior to this season it was Julius Euculius, which personally I think is a good way of localizing it, but before then it was spelled different, now its Julius Juukulius. ユリウス•ユークリウス (Yu-Ri-U-Su) • (Yu-Ku-Ri-U-Su) (direct romanization would be Yulius Yukulius) I'm fine with one or the other just pick one, it annoys the hell outta me that they can't get things right.

the problem with reid is that he basically has all the same bs powers that rienhart has. thats what the sword saints get. so theres no way to win against him. the best they could do is what emilia does. obviously the way to win is to use some kind of trick. if subaru IS flugel, then the test is set up so that theres a way for him and the rest to pass it(or at least him and those who would be useful later on). and if flugel is subaru that means hes already experienced all this and knows what subaru will do to pass the tests. i watched an interesting video on youtube where the poster pointed out that when subaru teleports to this world in the first episode that you hear the return by death sound. meaning its possible that instead of being the beginning of the loop, its actually subaru returning to the past later on in the loop with return by death, and that his memories were erased(its also possible that its just a dramatic moment and thats all just looking into things too much.)

True, but we are where we are. Imagine if everyone but him managed to get past Reid. Only Subaru remembers him and all the others see is the white cloak. If he can't get past Reid how is he supposed to justify him even being there, seeing as how no on remembers him. I get it though, the obstacle before them is not even just a great sword fighter, but the first sword saint. I'd be hesitant to say one isn't a good fighter or a knight just because they can't beat Reinhardt's great, great, great, great, grand daddy. That's probably one of the reasons he can't back down. To prove to himself that its possible to one day reach Reinhardt with his sword.
