It's really interesting how the man in yellow uses religion as a disguise for his weird behavior. Because there's no reason for him to be so unsettling. He could've easily been like a middle aged mom or something. He specifically chooses an overly religious teen girl because it explains her strange behavior. To us as the viewer she's strange because she's the focus. If we only went off of our knowledge as someone who doesn't know about the man in yellow she honestly wouldnt even be strangest person there. Look at wtf Fatima is doing. To the frommers because she's introduced as being super religious, it kind of explains her weird tendencies. They see her as this brainwashed kid who can't properly process her emotions because religion has been drilled into her head. If something bad happens, she explains her nonchalance by just saying "it's God's will" or smth like that. When she fucks with someone and they react she says some bs like it's a sign or they're a prophet. Minimizing their trauma and attributing it to some higher meaning beyond their control. No one questions it because that's how religion looks like to people from the outside. I like to think it's a bit of commentary on how religion can sometimes worsen your mental health. Instead of trying to find answers in yourself and communicating with others, you make up excuses about a higher calling or being and that what you're feeling is a punishment, or necessary for salvation.

So I'm gonna guess. If you have a fear/nightmare, and you throw the representation of that fear(the dolls) into the lake. The lake manifests the fear(giant dolls) into real things. Young Tabitha believed that those weird totem poles protected you from evil(maybe one of the adults told this to her past self). So when she stabbed the doll it actually worked. Maybe the lake actually makes what you believe come into reality. But only at night, which is why it didn't work on the bird.
