Alright so this is hard to explain if you don’t have any Japanese knowledge but I’ll try my best. Very basically, Chiyo was calling out Kurumi (hungry girl) for not speaking politely enough to Shizuka, because Shizuka is older/a senpai. She was using a very informal style of speaking which is generally reserved for your peers, not your elders. Of course from Kurumi’s perspective this isn’t a big deal because they’re all “family” but we know Chiyo is a stickler for these details. Okay, so then how do you convey this in English subtitles? It’s rather tricky, and it gets even more tricky because you also need it to connect to the original Japanese wiener (hot dog) pun. So they went for the “swearing” approach instead. That’s where “damn, bih” came from. And then the “dog” thing is their way of coming up with an English equivalent of informal speech after Kurumi tries to fix it but it’s not good enough for Chiyo. So Chiyo keeps calling it out with her speech quirk “dog-rgh” or “nai-uu” in Japanese. The rgh/uu is just a grunting noise basically. So Kurumi hears the “nai-uu” over and over and it starts getting mixed up in her foodie brain and starts to sound like “uinnaa” (wiener) instead which is kind of similar. So really the only way to make this work in English was to have Kurumi say “dog” and turn it into “hot dog” to match the joke. This isn’t really a great explanation and it leaves a lot of details out but it was starting to get too long lol so I tried to just give you the bare minimum. Hopefully it makes sense.

Thing is. They DO take it serious. But only the romance. So you can get fun well written romance AND off the rocker comedy. The comedy is the glue that holds it all together otherwise frankly getting to 100 girlfriends would be impossible.

In the manga once the number gets pretty high there are plenty of Rentaro-less chapters out there with just the girlfriends interacting, those are usually highlights. Some of the pairings are either very funny or sickly sweet.

4:25 Yeah, I have a feeling that it's something that just can't be translated to English. Japanese has different ways of conjugating verbs depending on how respectful/formal you're trying to be. Elders are shown more respect than peers, so Chiyo is correcting her verb conjugation since Kurumi talks to everyone casually. Oh yeah, and she's also growling while trying to correct her grammar, so what she's saying isn't even making sense in Japanese.
