Yeah, the writer deliberately ignored the rules to have her look pretty going forward. It was obvious that they her appearance was going to change in some way since an anime typically isn't going to have an ugly woman as permanent member of the main cast for long.

There is also the fact that drawing someone "ugly" can usually require you to have a distinct design for them and take up time if you are going to constantly draw that character. We have characters that are canonically not supposed to be good looking but look fine(shinji in bleach). Adding more distinct features to sell it also results in more work. Plus, you also do get the play with the narrative of "this is a new life ", and the idea of "a child can't choose where it's born". Here tho, clevatess could, and it shows his emotional dev as he chooses to put her into a better life situation, with her appearance reflecting that. Fulfills a 2 pronged use of changing her appearance.

Idk… feels kinda lame they “fixed” Nell into making her attractive, I know it’s anime but I was hoping the dark fantasy would just keep her as she is. Also I understand the explanation why she looks different, but that doesn’t mean they had to make her look good. I’ll give it a couple more episodes but it’s disappointing

She had been abused nonstop, used as a , for lack of better term, f-toy by abusive men. Her teeth were f*cked up and knocked out. Her face was permanently swollen from all the times she'd been beaten. She couldn't even talk properly because of all the abuse she sustained. To make matters worse, she'd been forced into pregnancies which she had to give away, or ab*rt to survive. So basically, he fixed her body to what she would have been like if she'd been loved and taken care of properly. She looks older, but she was actually in her 20's I believe. These are all things you may not notice (about her abuse) but there are tons of small hints throughout the episodes when her character is first introduced.
