They'll explain it next episode, but it's a split personally thing mixed with the Forge situation. If you remember the princess as the Dean said that her family were the spiritual leaders of the Origin Village before it was destroyed. It's why her mom offed herself and why her bloodline was considered "cursed" (they lost their equivelent to the forge and the book long ago so they started to malfuction more of less). The normal princess wasn't aware of what the other personality was doing. She only recently got put in the mirror world (which Alicia mentioned a few episodes ago likely has cracks all over because it's still not done being rebuilt). Also, the Union was the group of wizards that the Ravens were selling children and baby dark beasts too from season one.

I think the hang up you guys ran into was the mirror scene at the end and how it was directed. With all the swapping positions and becoming one in the mirror as the dean, etc. Its symbolic of the princesses mental state/the blood of Allozar fully splitting her personality. Just think of that scene as one person (the princess who's wearing the skinsuit of the dean that she got in ep 7) talking to her split personality while her "mental break" completes. Up until that moment the real princess had no idea the split personality existed (which was slightly more explained in the manga/LN but they cut some of that explanation on top of another fairly important piece of lore/history, that I'll refrain from spoiling in case they mention it in upcoming episodes). More exhaustive explanation: First what we know or can infer: 1.) Princess Milea is real and exists, and the dean was real and existed. At least until the princess turned him into a skin suit at 14 as shown in ep 7 this season. 2.) The princess has the blood of allozar which is connected to the book of origins (we know this due to her speech in ep 7 and in this episode). 3. )The blood of allozar is also described as a curse, which is why the princesses mother jumped off the castle wall. This curse causes whoever has it to develop a split personality or "evil half". 4.) The princess could hear a voice coming from drel (Vordin) when he was visiting the king of boelate and looked into a special mirror allowing her evil half to fall under vordins influence 5.) Finally we know the books of toah can influence/control/empower people, as was shown and in season 1 via the book of the forge influencing the king of hiderat. So with all that in mind. A not so condensed but SPOILER FREE explanation of everything that happened is as follows: At age 4, the princess had the blood of allozar "jump started" by looking in the mirror and interacting with vordin at the behest of drel. This also allows her evil half to fall under vordins influence. We know this because of the flashback scene in ep 7 of this season. From 4 to 14, the princess and her evil half were in one body, and the dean was alive and well. The princesses evil half joins the union and rises through the ranks becoming leader, etc. Then, at 14 the evil half kills the dean as was shown in ep 7 this season. Turning him into a skin suit and assuming his identity. Meaning, ever since the princess turned 14, the dean hasn't existed and has been impersonated by the evil half of the princess. Any interactions between the princess and the dean after this point can be viewed as her two personalities interacting with each other, (which is why the dean says none of its been real and that milea has always been alone). After that, but before the current events of the anime, the evil half traps the good half of the princess in the mirror realm as was shown this episode. And she's been there ever since. Or I could be completely wrong. I haven't read the Manga/LN. Just went online and skimmed the related chapters to clear it up for myself too lol.

i think the princess bloodline has genetic passed personality disorder , which acts as a curse in the series. to put it another way whats going on its kinda like how in cod blacksop 2 mason was thinking his russian pal (forgot his name} was still alive having conversations with him, but didnt realize till the end of the game that he wasnt real, though in this case the princess second personality took full control of her body by trapping her in another realm while the evil one takes full control and assumes the visage of the dead pope as well using a mask

The princess has split personality. There’s her actual personality, and then there’s the personality of the Great Sages that inherit the task of guiding the hero. While the princess was in her dean disguise, the Sage used magic to split her original personality and trap it within the Mirror Labyrinth. It’s like the end of Fight Club. The main character saw himself pointing a gun at his buddy who organized the club, but he was actually pointing the gun at his own head.
