The show does not always INTEND to be funny. It has some serious moments. And some wholesome ones. And some really dark ones. The writers fight each other over the tone they wanted the manga to have and thats kinda how it ended up mostly comedy with some serious or dark stuff mixed in. Sometimes they just wanna show you something crazy. Sometimes they just wanna remind you of the dark parts of these girls lives.

The hand statue at 16:42 is a reference to Kazuo Umezu's "Gwashi" (グワシ) hand sign. Umezu was a legend in the horror manga sphere. This is the second Umezu reference in the show, and I don't know why. Umezu died at the end of 2024, so it might be a homage. I haven't read the Yani Neko manga to confirm whether this was in the original material and if the date would align, so I don't know.
