love maomao's character change after shisui. yall put it perfectly, she became hardened and takes no bullshit from no one and i love that about her. the sister essentially had to choose between two evils, neither a "good" choice but from their perspective one was still favorable over the other. i love how maomao wasn't portrayed as having "saved" them necessarily. she doesn't see it as saving but was willing to give them options spo they could choose whatever they would regret the least. I do want to point out i think it's also realistic that maomao is a little hypocritical here. she doesn't HAVE to live in a run down shack and could more than likely upgrade with the nation's crown prince at her back and with the earnings she makes that chou-u even stated are pretty decent. the things that stop that lifestyle besides her petty pride is accepting favors and feeling like she'll be indebted to someone, as maomao is a character that sees most relationships as purely transactional. i love the flaws in her, too. they make for a very appealing character

Your analysis of her is truly spot on, but I’d argue that it isn’t pride that drives her but her flight instinct from her trauma. She’s never talking from a place of ego or truly being self centered(as she does always come back around to helping her loved ones), rather that the first 16 years of her life taught her that she is the ONLY ONE who will care about her survival. Not one other person would, or even could, lift her out of the mud, so she had to learn to claw her way out. It wasn’t until the Rear Palace that she started having connections—true connections thats not just a brothel—where other people gave her help with little strings attached. Going back to the pleasure district removed her from her new “safe” space, and put her back in the same spot of having to always keep her head on a swivel along with every favor coming with a heavy price as it isn’t a bond like with those in the Rear Palace. As I was writing this, I realized like one true place of pride is Lakan, but I think s1 showed us why that was understandable from MaoMao’s point of view. This all being said, this trauma can still be viewed as a sense of pride so if that is what you meant, I concede. Idk i love when people can discuss MaoMao’s flaws here without it being like “omfggg why didnt she just ask jinshiii”

She’s introducing them at the Verdigris House, it is honestly the best brothel for them to work at given their circumstances. Granny knows what sells and what doesn’t, so she’ll def wait for the girls to get older before they’re expected to sleep with anybody. If they ever do(remember not all courtesans entertain via sex)

I wouldn't say that it's hypocritical of Maomao to say that the sister has no other choice between the two paths because in the sister's situation it's a matter of survival, Maomao is living decently compared to most in her area so even if she can get an upgrade through her connections that would be more of a leisure than a necessity.

Yeah Maomao’s character has a lot of nuance and the way she reacts to things/feels things can’t really be distinguished into simply black and white: good person / bad person categories. I agree with what you’re saying and was getting at that too. I’ve read the light novels up to a certain point and it is also easier to see get a read on how her personality reflected that of what she went through with each new relationship. Shisui and Jinshi have made distinguished marks in her life and we’re being shown these sides of her. I and many LN readers predict that this season will weed out a LOT of viewers as it becomes way less easy to categorize our FL (and ML for that matter) as “good” people with “normal” reactions to certain events. I’ve watched a few reactions to this specific episode and to no one’s surprise it was funny to see people be like “why is she so ice cold all of a sudden?? where is her kindness” etc etc. As we go along I feel people are gonna start to become more and more conflicted with the evolution of Maomao and the Jinshi/Maomao dynamic. went a little off topic here but kinda wanted to rant on that too :’)

Considering how the older sister is very determined and protective of her sister she definitely seems like she will do whatever it takes to develop skills that would make it less likely for her or her sister to have to sleep with clients. Or at least not have to sleep with the bottom feeder types. It's just so sad that their "father" drove the family to their different fates because he valued gambling and using them for his gambling. Even his wife's death didn't make him hesitate or be remorseful. From start to finish it was about not losing what money the daughters brought in from working outside the home.

not sure if u misunderstood me so ill just reiterate the point: i was saying maomao could be seen as hypocritical due to blaming the poor for “making them live in a shack” when in reality she is still the daughter of a high La clan and also very well acquainted with the crown prince of the nation who favors her. i understand the reason why she DOESNT decide to change her lifestyle as YES it is more of a luxury than necessity, which is precisely where the hypocrisy of her character plays in my opinion. she isn’t stuck there like the sisters who have no other option to go into courtesan work to split off from their gambling abusive father for a chance at a better life. She is a legitimate child of Lakan and has a right by birth to live in his wing of the estate if that is what she wanted (which she does not.) hope that clears up what i was trying to say !

Shisui stay haunting the narrative fr But ye I absolutely get what you’re saying. I think it’s going to happen for a lot of characters as the episodes come out, considering what happens in the light novels later on (i havent read all of them but I am deep in spoiler territory). I’m at least grateful that Roshi and Sheera had a reasonable reaction to MaoMao’s response here, which makes me hopeful for whats to come later. I personally love that the lines are so blurred when it comes to good/bad, it makes the media feel all the more real

Ok I understand your point better, basically the older sister has no choice but to make the best out of a bad situation while Maomao is realistically far from that. I would say that's more of case of speaking from a place of privilege instead of hypocrisy because the message that Maomao is saying isn't something that she's actively going against, it just doesn't apply to her as of this moment.

I feel like back then there weren't a lot of good opportunities for women, especially very poor ones. The girl even said she would just end up a street walker eventually if she didn't go to the good courtesan house, so a very good opportunity for her. Back in the day was shitty

The dad was so trash I feel like the real reason he was mad was cuz now he can't sell his daughters himself. He comes off as a dad that would absolutely sell his daughters to a bookie as collateral or loan shark to pay off a debt and they wouldve been in a far worse position than at the Verdigris House. At least that old actually takes care of and protects her girls, loan sharks wouldve beaten them daily. Hes just mad he missed out on what he could've made off them for sure
