Wow, what a masterpiece of a character. Sad to see it end like this, was low key hoping he went off and did his own thing in peace. In a way I still feel like the king as most  knew him died metaphorically in the moment he remembered Komugi. Not sure if you guys get what I mean?

this is the only thing that has truly broken me, out of every anime I've seen and even really sad stuff in one piece has hit me this hard. I was straight up sobbing for most of this episode.

Sheep
>>96168161

Damn bro, you're watching this too? I was barely holding back tears this ep.

jesse almonte

Remember hating Meruem after he was born? Togashi knows how to write character development

gaelthras

And there you have it, the pinnacle of character development. Amazing reaction as usual ! thank you for posting all the remaining arc.

Legion

lmao, I was wondering by Beans was black all of a sudden and then I realized that he's the same key as your greenscreen

Christian Beloch

I still tear up with this episode every time I watch it, and I’ve watched it at least 11 times. Truly a beautiful end to, imo, the best arc in all of anime.

Shaw

I recommend watching Aleczander's videos on HxH on youtube. They go in DEEP into the HxH characters.

Kurumi

Damn that last scene still holds up to be one of the most powerful scenes in anime/manga I've ever felt. Just hearing him call her name brought tears this shit is heavy

Nate D.

“ a anime where the final boss was too strong and the mangaka didn’t know how to deal with it *kishimoto coughs heavily several times*

Nicholas Cheatham

I always thought it was a plot hole that the people poof used his scales on during the contest didnt get radiation poisoning

Shaw

LMAOOO why is Beans Black?!! LOL I think ur greenscreen might be messing with video feed. or it might be Vimeo

Joshua Burns

Shit still got me crying even though I’ve already seen this... damn man

Shaw

Thank you to Togashi Yoshihiro and Madhouse for bringing us this Masterpiece.

Felix Jimenez

I cannot state how many times i have seen this episode and every single time I cry like a baby. This is true art

Shaw
>>39628018

They probably did. It was never stated that they didn't. He only used it on a few people. Not all 5 Million. In any case, it's not a significant enough issue. They were willing to let all of them die for the greater good anyways

Damion Middleton

You can watch this over a thousand times and still cry. That’s when you know that this arc is an S-Tier. SSS-Tier to me.

MrNoor114

I don't know if you caught that but the king always say "I will not repeat myself" but at 3:39 he said "I shall repeat myself" this man did a full 180 in his character.

Shaw
>>39628018

Cause like I said it doesn't really matter in the story. Also it would be very hard to explain since they blamed Diego for the massacre and not the Chimera Ants.

Nicholas Cheatham
>>39628018

I didnt really mean an explanation for the character I just meant a passing nod to the audience saying the were poisoned but we never got that and after watching this show countless times it seems weirder and weirder that they left that one thing out after pretty much perfectly wrapping everything else up in the course of the show

Viela Guay

From Meruem's introduction, never thought he'd be someone whose death would be so heavily mourned

Fabrice Junior

I guess I'm alone on this one. I still hate Meruems guts and hoped he died in that explosion with Netero. Him having a peaceful ending never sat right with me. Great character overall tho.

Joel Braaten

Yoshihiro Togashi is a master writer.

Lurkingposter
>>39631430

Bruh, he was literally a child that was barely alive for two months. Yet, he ended up gaining a better understanding of morality than many adults.

Gevin Tipsword

good night king may you rest well...

R3APER
>>39626238

Exactly. His work on Yuyu Hakusho and HxH are so good at making the main villains sympethic (well... most of them. Some are irredeemable)

Carlos

I don't know how many times I've seen this episode, or reactions to it at this point and each and every time I fuckin weep. So beautiful.

R3APER
>>39631430

Netero essentially "killed" the ant thinking part of Meruem so once he was reborn his mind was more creative and human-like. Netero and Komugi were the MVPs of the arc. Netero caused the death of all the strongest ants (minus Pitou) but Meruem's bond with Komugi and his determination to try to beat her in competition is what distablized the royal guards enough for the hunters' plan to even have a chance (not to mention kept him from going off to freely murder people)

Shaw
>>39628018

That actually makes a lot of sense cause Pouf can't possibly be hiding an unlimited number of scales.

botanbutton

I hate that this makes me sob EVERY. TIME. UGH.

JunpeiFES .

You are the man, i can watch this 100 times and tear up every single one of them lmao

Anonymous
>>39628056

It's not Vimeo, I played it with a different player. It's definitely the background showing through, so it is the greenscreen.

Bona Fide

i cried again .. this is like my 30th time watching hxh

Typhon

RIP beans, getting the green screen treatment

kurumi Tokisaki

....why is the earth called earth when its mostly made of water :p. Anyway, great arc. Im glad he died but he really didnt deserve a peaceful death.

Ace Spiegel

Just to clarify, Komugi had a nen condition set similar to Kurapika, where if she lost a game of gungi she would actually die. That's how she was always able to beat the King.

Peach

This is my favorite episode of HxH hands down, no matter how many times I watch it it always manages to make me cry, hits me right in the heart. Meruem I think is one of my favorite characters in all of anime, he's so well written for a villain and it's amazing how Togashi can make you cry for a villain's death like this. Truly a masterpiece

Damiester
>>39631430

I would disagree. When Netero was fighting Meruem, he already knew the Ant King was capable of flexible thought processes. Meruem himself offered to have peaceful negotiations instead of fighting even after taking multiple hits. That's a kingly attitude that is lacking in human society.

Damiester
>>39628018

Part of this arc's themes is the propaganda and unreliability of news media. Even in this episode alone, you can see how certain events are going under the radar cause the government doesn't want you to know about it.

Damiester
>>39626238

He also made Enma to be the ultimate antagonist in the manga and have Enma Jr indict him from his leadership position in hell. Togashi always brings plot points back from multiple arcs. Sensui can die in peace.

Damiester

I can never fathom the thought of cheering for what Netero did after these past 2 episodes. If anything, he represented what sustains small dictatorships in this series.

Darksteel78
>>39634667

Right!? I was like, why is he that color and what's going on with the grass?? Chroma key strikes again!

liam joyce
>>39631430

Yup don’t think anyone else feels like that the point in his character was to be this hated monster that changes to become someone compassionate and loving

Juu

God the Chimera Ant arc is so fucking good, no matter how many times I watch it it hits different every time. Such a god tier SSS anime arc.

BubbleTea

Bruh trying to ugly sob quietly under my blanket at 3am. After watching this anime like a bajillion times, this episode still gets me every time. Especially at the end, the glowing particles are Meruem's nen and that last one was on Komugi's hand right before he dies.

Jowel

Youpi was the physically strongest royal guard - he died the weakest ... Pouf hated and wanted to kill the thing the king loved the most - he died right after experiencing the kings love for her ... SSS tier

Dobriv
>>39627830

What? Kishimoto did madara way dirty at the end. He was op but then weak ass black zesty stabbed him in the back to make kavya? Foh and subvert your expectations

Theo Traumato

what me surprised me most in this arc that I never expected in a shonen anime a great work about the human condition. The whole theme what makes men and what monster, and what is the difference - never expected that compelling themes from a shonen.

JunpeiFES .

Yo roshi! Dont hold it in! I saw you 😆 your voice break down a bit at the end of your review

JD
>>39628018

There's nothing to say those he used scales on didn't get radiation poisoning. How severe it would be, or if it would transmit through "scales" is another question as well. Radiation from a few "scales" might be as bad as getting an MRI, or it might be bad enough to ensure cancer later down the line, or it might have been enough to kill them too.

JD
>>39631430

Response to Damiester: at that point he had only conceded as much as allowing only a few special humans, like Netero and Komugi to live. At the end of the fight he only conceded as much as allowing humans a special zone to live in, and that they would reconsider the amount and quality of humans to eat. It's amazing how many people root for Meruem at that stage of his development lmao.

JD
>>39637840

His choice was to either flip a coin, or kill Meruem. On one side of that coin was a monster who would eviscerate humanity - literally take over the whole human world and put human beings in the position of farmed cattle. On the other side of the coin was the vague idea that the King *might* be a "kind" dictator. Netero chooses not to risk flipping that coin, as the worst outcome was a dictator with a sense of humanity. How is Netero representing what sustains small dictatorships, by killing a budding dictator? (Meruem explains his intentions, they are those of a dictator. That he would become one isn't up for debate.)

JD
>>39637840

I agree that Netero is not a good person, or is at least a complicated character in an ethical sense. He's very much in on the status quo of a cruel and callous world, never challenging it or seeking to change it (it seems) but to say allowing the ant King to take over the world was the right choice is pretty insane to me.

Damiester
>>39637840

If a monster capable of such feats were offering to have an open discussion, you should take that over the risk of losing. Meruem could've easily decided to rampage around the world prior to the poison killing him if he truly was such an evil monster. People who believe Meruem should die simply never considered all the possibilities that could occur based on Netero's choice. It was pure luck that they got off so lightly and it was all because of Komugi's influence.

Damiester
>>39637840

Strategically speaking, there was much more the King and Royal Guards could've done to survive or attempt to. For example, Meruem could've eaten all of those humans to strengthen himself to a point where he could gain resistance. With nen, everything's possible after all. Also, if Pitou wasn't burdened with Komugi, she could've developed something to heal the King as well. There were so many possibilities, but everything worked in the Hunter's favour. It's just not a good plan to provoke an overwhelmingly stronger opponent. Netero did it for himself and himself only.

Damiester
>>39637840

Not to mention, their mobility is on a whole other level. So far, the Hunters had nothing available that could keep them rooted to one place. Imagine Meruem actually leaving the place and arriving in cities to wreck them DBZ style. He's capable of it.

Lyric Laude

Well you handled this episode better than kimchi and tofu.. And myself. I cried like a baby ngl.

Ang

Facts on what you said about the symbolic death of the (Ant) King as he remembered Komugi. I've said this in comment threads before and people treat me like a crazy person😭😂

Ace Spiegel
>>39634895

@Damiester @JD It's not directly confirmed but it's hinted at in everyway. When Komugi meets the King and starts playing Gungi with him they have that scene where the king is trying to break her rythem at the game. She explains that if she loses once she'll become a burden to her family and so instead of her arm, she would offer her life up if she ever lost. On top of that she awakened nen literally by her genius at gungi alone. Nen works based on what the user wants. That's how Biskys transformation works. If Komugi really had that as her mentality, how would that not be her nen condition?

Ace Overton
>>39631430

If you think of it in context, there isn't much that he did wrong, as a character. He was born powerful, sustained himself on humans, but came to understand that they are far more valuable than he ever understood. In the end he simply wanted to be with the person he had come to love and care for, and not harm anyone. If you can't root for that, then what character can be redeemed at all? He lived a full life in the span of a few months, most of which he was lied to and gassed up to be a savage. Yet still changed.

David Reid

jesus ive seen this episode so many times and i still get hella chocked up

K-RayTV

Man Roshi you did a great job with this one, I had a frog in my throat the entire last part of this episode....great job!

Trevor

Maaaan Komugi x Meruem’s Deaths are the only time I’ve literally sobbed over a show

godUsoland

11:05 Hold up, why my man Beans got White skin? The dude is green.

Alejandro Pupo

Literally top anime arcs of all time. Such phenomenal stuff in this entire story

BubbleTea

Just wanted to add, the call back to Meruem's name meaning the light that illuminates all.... His En is literally that. Crazy how Togashi had Meruem literally living up to his name.

RedOne Osama

this episode never fails to f* me up over & over again!

Jake Disarufino

Meruem does with the women he loves who physically is probably the weakest yet she remains undefeated and the strongest being ever continually lost to her... this arc is so beautiful they took a character that you should hate and you ended up not wanting him to die by the end masterpiece 🙏🏽🔥

Lupa is Dadi

10:54 Man I love how beans is green this is perfect!

Komeru

That final scene with Meruem and Komugi always makes me cry.

Oscar Barcelo

Yeah that gave me a lump in my throat, amazing ending to the arc

Christina

I watch the English dub of Hunter x Hunter, which is REALLY well done, and the VA for Meruem KILLED it! He was sooo perfect. When he said “Let’s play” after finding Komugi I cried 😭😭😭 that one line was SO full of emotion that it really hit me lol

Jjj.

In my opinion, meruem is the greatest villian ever... not for how powerfull he is, but for how well written he is. Imagine a dude that started with the conviction that he was born to rule it all, to end with the conviction that he was born to spend time we the person he loved. such a masterpiece.

Aldehyde

they made each other happiest in each other's lives, if that not the meaning of life. Meaning of life (imo) is in the face of anything that can be offered, the meaning is Love

Cody Braim

thug tears were shed

Mr 111

that one hurt like a mfer! Komugi x Mereum way 4 life

Astor Lefflinker

I was trying really hard not to cry. Bad idea, I couldn't control it and just gave me a headache.

jordansamuel

Man the best episode in the entire show for me. This one hits different

Shawn Oxley

This episode and a silent voice are the only things which will always make me cry and not even just thug tears, the whole Meruem/Komugi story is done perfectly
