Re-watching this episode I can see the very clear references to and inspiration from Miyazaki's work. "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke" in particular.

quxntum

its crazy how wan was the first one to learn how to fire bend correctly and the avatar cycle starts at fire. basically hinting him being the first avatar as he was going to meet the other turtles to learn the other bendings.

Lady Jie

Y’all ain’t ready for dis one. And by y’all, I really mean us.

JoshuaSal

Awww yus been waiting for these

Owens Corning

on the new streaming service it doesn’t let me go fullscreen/rotate my screen. anybody else have this problem? on mobile

Lady Jie

Use the safari link at the bottom, it should be fine then to rotate the screen

Ron

Wan of my favorites 2 parters in the avatar series

Dante

Bruh i got a notification and came straight here

Devin B

Wan dressing up as a spirit reminds me of Aang dressing up as an old man to get into Omashu. They are quick to using disguises lol.

Dimitri

This really should have been it's own series.

Inmate_I

is it just me or no audio?

Lightning Strike Fitness

Thats what made no sense to me with this origin. In ATLA they said the dragon, air bison, moon etc were the original benders and they learned from them also added with their specific martial art style. Now it feels retconned.

Apri

I think of it like this- the lion turtles gave humans the ability to bend while the others taught them how to use it. I also imagine that the history is not completely known by everyone, some know more then others

Nikki C

I don't know how familiar you all are with Studio Ghibli films, but the oasis definitely has to be a reference to Spirited Away, even the little carrot spirit reminds me of the radish spirit from the movie. And while I always compared Wan to Aladdin because of the beginning, I realized recently that once he leaves to travel with Mula, he reminds me a lot of Ashitaka and Yakul from Princess Mononoke.

Lyric Laude

Going back to atla, this is why aang felt like the dragons "wanted them to do something".

godUsoland

Quite possibly the best 2 episodes in Season 2. Wan is 100% Aladdin.

User100

For all you The Walking Dead fans, Avatar Wan is voiced by Steven Yeun who plays Glenn!

Pucki

its princess Mononoke he even gets a similar mount xD

matthew

I remember these two episodes cause some issues because of it ruin the origin of bending but I don’t think so all lion turtles only gave them power to bending but that didn’t mean they were master benders getting it. I mean everyone knows to how punch but that doesn’t mean that makes you a great boxer they have to train

eastbaynick

For all the times Ive watched Korra I didnt realize that mulah was his avatar animal

Jigga Man

I like these episodes but loose ends abound. They made it seem like each lion turtle could only give a certain element but mentioned that there were dozens of them, what type of power could the other turtles give? Also never really touched on 'how' Rava gets reincarnated just that she does... And are dragons naturally fire benders or did the lion turtles grant the power of the elements to animals as well? (Thinking about the mole rat earth benders here as well).. I have so many questions!!!

I really love this origin episodes.

Brandon Bobb

I believe that they were given the power of the elements by the lion turtles. Afterwhich, people learnt bending (the martial art) by observing the dragons, the ocean/moon, the badger moles and the sky bison as shown in the origin stories by Wan imitating the dragon and learning the dancing dragon form. He was then able to use the element of fire like it was an extension of his body.

Sheraya san

have you guys considered maybe adding an anime movie reaction tier? i would love to see it so i too can be exposed to more anime films. this episode reminded me a lot of princess monoke, idk if yall have ever seen that

Cody Braim

Yo that Uchiha sweatshirt is dope

Wheels29

I'd like that as well. a suggestion for you, Idk if you've seen it, would be "A Silent Voice". One of the most beautiful movies I've seen period. That being said, I've only watched maybe 30-50 anime movies, so seeing new suggestions and reactions would be nice.

David McMurray

So, did anyone else think the lady at the temple was Azula?

Cls

This new format is TRASH! And y’all started it on the best episodes of the season

FragZone

Darkness is spreading! loool

RavinFox .

Awesome Aggretsuko shirt.

Chris Hawking

In the future some around Aang timeline the world started hating the fire nation cuz of the actions of Sozin first then Azulan second & last one being Ozai in that exact order for starting & continuing the conquer War on the rest of the world

Fun fact: The spirit oasis in which the Wan was bathing, is the same in the Season 1 of ATLA, with the moon and ocean spirits. In this episode the Lemur said it has special healing properties just like the one in the North Pole.

I do wish sometimes they would do less of the guessing and speculation and just watch. Sometimes they're talking over dialogue and can possibly miss things. You don't have to guess everything...

Jay Q

Yes!!! Omg it gets annoying sometimes. Like stop narrating the scenes for them, they are watching it just like you, so they are noticing the same things.

Ala’a Atari

I spat my water out at "Why, 'cause it's black" *Sheera stares intensely*

Jaret Mullins

The lion turtle that anng met was the fire one, if you look at the symbols on their heads

Staus

The first avatar was a whole ass Aladdin

Malik Taylor

im confused, how would Wan stealing the fire make future firebenders thousands of years later evil? or bad? i feel like Sheelas notorious for speaking too soon. Loved the reaction tho

Landon

How do I watch this in full screen 😂

Nicholas Staker

Actually it isn't, the oasis in ATLA in is the North Pole. Wan is shown heading to one of the spirt portals in the next episode and they are both located at the poles, and the portals haven't moved. There is DVD commentary for the ATLA episode Seige of the North part 1 that explains that the spirt oasis in the North is a place where the spirt and human worlds overlap, so this oasis is just another one of those places.

Jordon

Yo, Sheera. I'm mad at how you always keep 10000 IQ. Why you so smart tho?

rickie woodson

yin and yang. light and dark, male and female, known and unknown aka the avatar. the perfect balance like buddha teaches

Koria Hayes

I always thought that this was the same spirit oasis as the one in the north pole. If this was the era before the avatar, and we've seen how many statues, how many millennia had have passed since then, the climate would have been way different back then. Where this oasis is may not be the North Pole we're used to seeing but maybe more like.....Canada temps nowadays, still cold but aided by the fact that the heat it radiates isn't just powered by two spirits but a whole gang of them. This oasis is just more powerful, showing just how much the spiritual side of the world has deteriorated even by aang's time, let alone korra's
