Unfortunately, all across the world, as @Susana Canales mentioned, paying off your debts with identured servitude, or flat out slavery was a thing. Especially with dead beat parents, or husbands, or worse people with gambling and drinking problems. It wasn't shit to go grab your kids or wife because you owe a bar tab, and trick them out til they pay it off. They did the same thing in England, China, and still do it in India in the lower parts of the caste system. Shit is wild.

You have to understand that back then, there wasn’t really any real work for women other than sex work. Working in a brothel. Women weren’t able to earn their own money. And yeah. It’s a scam. Whether they’re working to pay off a debt or they trick women into working by setting them up with false debts, once they’re in, they never leave. They probably charge them for taking care of them. Makeup. Clothes. Food. Lodgings. Medical care if they need it. It all adds up. Unless someone pays off their debt, the women are screwed.

In a lot of places around the world, primarily places with little or no influence from the Abrahamic religions, women used to work all sorts of jobs other than sex work. The jobs were usually considered "lesser" jobs, but it did happen. Many even owned businesses, but due to social norms, it was tougher for them to own stuff and live independently. Those two were victims of sex trafficking. An issue that is still very prevalent even today.
