This ep was a wake up call cause no matter how helpful Echidna has been to Subaru she is still a witch not just in name but in her nature as well. I couldn't blame him for thinking about forming a contract without asking the consequences after all she's done for him.

Echidna basically wants the Platinum Trophy. She wants to know everything, she's greed after all. She definitely going to help Subaru get to the future he desires but only after he experience all the routes which will result to him dying more, that's why sloth called it the "in the end" promise.

The author actually made a story about what would of happened if Subaru took the contract. He basically died more than a 100 million times or so for Echidna to see every single route he could take and what the results would be. as an example Subaru killed himself in the afternoon just to tell Petra in the morning what weather it would be during the day that shits crazy lmao

To expand on Echidona's deal, I wanted to clarify a few things that were said in the Web Novel (rough draft of the Light Novel) and because she was being vague. Basically, for Echidona, Subaru's Return by Death is a dream come true. She can see both sides of a decision and explore multiple avenues of reality, satisfying her curiosity in what happens for each timeline. She actually would've helped Subaru reach his end goal of saving everyone. However...in order to do that, she would've made subaru go through every possible route and decision. Every possibility, every decision, from ones where Subaru goes insane and kills the people he loves, to suffering and trying different options that she knows won't work, Echidona would've made Subaru experience all of them. A million deaths, a billion deaths, it does not matter to her how many times he has to reloop as long as he does every route. That's the cost of Echidona's deal. Also, in the Web Novel, Echidona's speech was like 5 pages long with no paragraph breaks.

So fun fact for you guys, the images he was seeing was the second trial, and it’s supposed to show you the worst outcome for your life. But because Subaru has had multiple lives, it will continue to play out each possible outcome making it almost impossible for him to beat the second trial, that’s why echidna Sent in the witch of lust to save Subaru from destroying his mind. So this makes this trial x amount of times harder than a regular person taking it since they would only have to deal with one life.

I rewatched this episode 4 times before I understood that the only way this episode makes sense is that the "bad" part of Echidna's contract is that Subaru has to give at least half his brain over to Echidna to contain her as a vessel. Remember, Echidna was trying to create the clones as a vessel for herself, but they couldn't contain her. Echidna wants to use RBD to learn everything in the world. It won't even matter if Subaru breaks or dies, because he'll revive (possibly also carrying Echidna with him when he revives, which is the only way it makes sense given tea party invitations are limited) or Echidna could try again the next time. It'll be questionable how much control over himself would Subaru have after the procedure.

I thought it was clear by the 'preceded with "in the end" ' Sloth mentioned; the bad part for Subaru is that Echidna would make him go through every single possible route and make different choices just for her to see what would happen out of curiosity, so maybe he'd die millions of times in each situation so Echidna could learn everything that could possibly happen in every single situation and point in time to satisfy her 'greed' for knowledge. For her its the perfect ability where she can learn as much as she could ever want.

I don't think the alternate timeline thing is a big deal in the overall story, a few things wouldn't make sense if those worlds did still exist because of how the witches seem to persist along with Subaru which means that they would also have to go back in time.

to put into context what Echidna really wanted out of a contract with Subaru she wanted to see everything that could possibly happen using Return by Death to turn back time. Like a player trying to unlock 100% of the content in a game by saving and restarting to try every line of dialogue or kill every character or romance every character, Echidna wanted to use Subaru to see everything that he could possibly see through any variation of actions. In the previous arc with Petelgeuse and the White Whale Subaru died around 5 times, if he were contracted with Echidna he would have died over 10,000 times.

I watch this show for entertainment purposes. However, the statement of, " He is strong mentally..is only relevant in anime. His RBD would have left him in a veggie state of constant shock even if he returned. So basically like those people looked after they died in "The Ring" movie. If someone came and shot your head off, and you returned right then; the brain signals would still register that your head was blown off...it wouldn't be a memory but more so reality at that point.

shes so full of shit all her friends came out to call her on it, thats rough. that deal was bad and accepting it would have terrible consequences . also they dont really explain how the second trial works too well, essentially it all comes from the original tomb of wisdom that Echidna has. It records everything that happens in the world and creates the best approximation of what an "unthinkable present" would look like. so while what he saw was technically fake if he does leave behind other worlds thats what it would look like.

The thing to keep in mind is..... a lot of Re:Zero isn't simply black and white, especially in S2. The witches, are they really evil? Not really, as far as I can tell. They're just representing their respective "sins." Echidna isn't evil or malicious, she's not trying to fuck ppl up or anything, and she's not "good" either. She's just greedy, she's the Witch of Greed. And her greed is mostly for knowledge. Though she also has greed for Subaru. Not as a witch, but as a woman, she wants him all to herself. She's absolutely wet for Subaru lol. I'd be sold on that, especially after her epic monologue there. Although I'd probably also ask Minerva and Sekhmet if they had anything to offer ;) Echidna is still best girl. Don't let heathens tell you otherwise.

If Subaru took the witch of greed's deal, she would have had him die over 100 million times before he got the end she promised him. And by the end of it, he was entirely not him self, and made so many sacrifices in the end. The author has made several what if storylines on if he mad deals with each of the Witches.

All of the witches are contradictions. Lust who looks innocent but can't be loved because she literally kills you if you get to close. Gluttony who makes endless food for people, but the food eats people. Greed who doesn't want material things just knowledge. Wrath who punches people but her punches heal. Sloth who is lazy but goes out of her way to do more than most so she can continue being lazy. And lastly pride the child who has no pride, simply wanting to punish "evil-doers" like a child playing pretend. Haven't seen enough of envy yet to be 100% but it seems she just loves and wants the best for that person. Even if it doesn't benefit themselves. So not envious in the slightest?
