What is blue balls?
It’s an informal way of describing a dull, aching heaviness in the testicles when arousal builds but doesn’t move toward orgasm, also known as epididymal congestion. Physiologically, the scrotum and pelvic floor get more blood flow during arousal. If things slow down or stop, that congestion can feel temporarily uncomfortable for some.
For many people, the discomfort passes on its own. Walking, relaxing your pelvic floor, a warm shower, or shifting your focus can settle things down. And if ejaculation happens later, great, but it’s not the only solution.
If you’re feeling pressure or pain that lingers, it’s worth having a clinician take a look. Testicular pain isn’t always coming from the testicle itself — it can be referred from the lower back or pelvic floor (I’ve got a video on that!). It can also stem from other urological conditions that should be ruled out. Getting it checked is always a smart move.
