In this live demo, I show you how to use rectal trainers. Rectal trainers are tools to help your pelvic floor and nervous system feel safer with touch, movement and stretch. They’re not something to force or push through. These can be helpful to tools (or toys πŸ˜‰) to train your anal muscles for comfortable and receptive anal play either solo or with a partner.

If you're feeling clenched or backed up, watch this video to start getting some relief.

When using rectal trainers, start with the smallest size. Use plenty of lube. Go slow. Breathe. Mild pressure and stretch is okay. Pain is not.

Short, relaxed sessions work better than long ones. If you notice clenching or holding your breath, pause and let things soften before continuing.

Watch the video for simple, step-by-step guidance.

The rectal dilators used in this video are from my favorite company, Intimate Rose. 🌹

No, not the window! πŸ˜‚ When using them for therapeutic purposes like this, do you usually move to larger sizes as the anus gets used to that size? Or is that considered unnecessary?

Kat

Hi Eric! Katerina here! I will make a note of this and ask Susie to respond upon her return from her retreat. Thanks! :)

Eric Hegeman

Thank you, I figured she would get to it when she got back, she's always good with that kind of thing

Steve

Brake a window with the rectal trainer!?!? Hahaha!

How do you know which size to start with? Can a dildo be used instead?

Dr. Susie Gronski - Doctor of Physical Therapy

For both pain relief and pleasure exploration, you'll want to start with a rectal trainer size that feels comfortable and not intimidating. If you can comfortably tolerate a finger insertion into the anus and rectum, then you can start with a size 3, 4, or larger just depending on your tissue capacity and tolerance to stretch that feels comfortable (per intimate rose sizing guidelines). A pelvic health therapist can also guide you on a suggested initial size after completing an evaluation. Yes, you can certainly use a dildo, just need to ensure that your body can adapt to the stretch, friction, and pressure demands from the size without pain. Always best to start gradual and build up your tolerance to larger sizes.

Dr. Susie Gronski - Doctor of Physical Therapy

Hey Eric! Yep, you gradually increase the size based on your personal needs and goals. For example, if the therapeutic purpose is to have a pain-free bowel movement, you would gradually increase in size that would feel similar to a bowel movement. Alternatively, a traditional vaginal dilator could also work.

Eric Hegeman

Ok, ty. I know people do that for pleasure reasons, just wasn't sure if it was the same for therapeutic reasons

Would the dialator work well for stretching for incomplete evacuation and leakage? I'm still a little nervous about trying a pelvic wand to supplement my PT visits.

Dr. Susie Gronski - Doctor of Physical Therapy

Hey Mark, Yes, a rectal dilator may be helpful for stretching incomplete evacuation and leakage if the issue is related to increased tone and diminished sensory awareness. Anorectal manometry or anorectal balloon training may also be helpful here.
