I’ve been thinking about something and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you think men are honest when talking about masturbation?

It’s one of those topics that can be joked about a lot, but rarely spoken about in a fully open way. I’m curious how you see it based on your own experiences, conversations, or observations.

Vote below and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments too. I’m really interested in different perspectives on this one.

I think this depends on who we are speaking to. A doctor to diagnose an issue, to a friend, or to a significant other. Each could be a different level of honesty and shared detail.

Unfortunately, I think there is still a lot of shame associated with male masturbation and it's viewed as disgusting or gross by society. I think the media propagates that male stereotype as well. Outside of a discussion with a doctor or a significant other as Michael said, it's not something that's accepted in our North American culture.

It's only been my wife that I have been completely open and honest.

I've been trying not to masturbate at all, which has been pretty challenging with my wife being postpartum and us not currently able to be together. My wife and I try to talk about it. Her libido is much lower than mine.

I think you get more open and honest over the age of 30 because you understand it’s something that’s natural and everybody does With that Syd I really wish during sex Ed in the fourth grade they had said the number one thing a girl wants to see is a guy masturbate. Life would’ve been a lot easier.

I think it’s still an uncomfortable topic for men, especially given how it’s portrayed socially, as lewd or something to be ashamed of. At least for me, it was discouraged in a Catholic household as a sin, not pleasing in the eyes of God. It’s hard to overcome those early beliefs.

No. I think it's understood, but also i dont care to know about another mans habits lmao

I think pleasure in general remains a taboo subject in our culture and we lose out so much on sharing the full human experience because of it. It's a shame.

Men are shut down for opening up. We are supposed to be made of stone and indestructible. Any sexual issues affect a man's confidence and how he presents.

Well said, JackSoDak. There’s still so much shame and stigma surrounding male masturbation. The social media messaging around masturbation for women versus men is often skewed and biased.

Thanks for sharing, Mark. Postpartum can be a challenging transition for couples, especially during the period when hormones, sleep changes, stress, and body changes impact desire and comfort with intimacy. It’s good to hear you and your wife are at least talking openly about it. I actually just recorded a video on why sex can hurt after having a baby and some of the physical and emotional factors that can influence intimacy postpartum. I think it helps normalize a lot of what couples experience during this time.

I grew up attending Catholic grammar school and high school… the sisters would always say, “Leave room for the Holy Spirit!” if we got too close during the homecoming dances. Oy vey! 😂

I can't wait to watch that one! Super relevant for me right now.

Only to my dr my wife shames me and men really don’t talk about it a lot of shame with it

Oh gosh, I’m really sorry to hear your wife shames you for masturbating. Partners should support one another in life, and especially within their sexual relationship, as erotic allies. Open, honest conversations around intimacy, desire, and sexual needs can go a long way toward building understanding rather than shame.
