Hey friends,

I’m sharing the latest Ask Dr. Susie where we discuss two topics I know many of you are navigating. We talk about pelvic pain flare-ups, why they happen, and how to respond without spiraling. And we get into the mental and emotional side of living with pain, including how to communicate with partners and stay connected during it all.

If you’ve ever felt like a flare means you’re back to square one, or you’ve struggled with the mental load of pelvic or genital pain, this one’s for you.

I also linked a couple "oldie but goodie" blog articles below if you want to explore this more:

As always, keep your questions coming. I read them all and do my best to answer as many as I can. If yours didn’t get answered in this video, check the comments.

See you here tomorrow for Day 2 of Ask Dr. Susie G.

Many of these things carry over to chronic pain in General; great resources.

Dr. Susie, I think I need a major shift in focus for my chronic pain, especially after listening to your "change your focus" audio. I've tried counseling before, but they had no idea about the pelvic area or everything involved with it. How can I explain to my healthcare provider what's in my head and how the pain affects me? Whenever I try to talk about my genitals with a provider, it feels like they blow me off or it comes across too sexual, like I'm describing a sexual act. I've wrote notes for the past 4 years to all my providers the always seam to skip over my sexual health causing me a lot of shame. Rex

Hey Rex, First, I’m really sorry your sexual health concerns felt brushed aside by some of the medical providers you’ve seen. Unfortunately, I’m not surprised. Sexual medicine is not traditionally a significant part of most medical training programs, which can leave many providers feeling uncomfortable or underprepared when discussing sexual concerns. I would suggest connecting with a sex therapist. They're licensed mental health professionals with specialized training in sexual health and are often very knowledgeable and comfortable discussing a wide range of sexual concerns.
