I’ve been reading some of the comments from people disappointed with our Moon Lovers Episode 18 reaction because they feel like we were not understanding enough toward Hae Soo.

And honestly, I get it.

A lot of the defenses I’ve read for her make sense.

She’s not evil. She’s not stupid. She’s not some master manipulator moving around the palace with all this power. She’s a good person stuck in a brutal situation, and most of the time she’s trying to stop people from getting hurt.

That’s part of the tragedy with her.

She wants to reduce pain in a world where pain is basically built into the system.

And yes, objectively, she does learn fast.

So I understand why people want us to give her more understanding.

But here’s the honest part: we have been relatively impatient with her, and a lot of that is because we are clearly attached to Wang So.

That’s the bias.

And I’m not gonna pretend it isn’t there.

The 4th Prince is one of the few constant characters in this show that just does not upset us like that. Between the way the actor plays him, the way the character moves, his actions, his thinking, his pain, his loyalty — he just doesn’t bother us the same way other characters do.

That man is our guy.

And when I watch a show, it’s OFTEN not just the story itself that holds me. Most of the time, it’s the character I bond with inside the story.

Once I’m locked in with that character, I start watching the show through what hurts them, what helps them, what makes them feel alone, and what gives them peace.

So with Moon Lovers, we are watching a lot of this through Wang So.

Adorkable liked him the most from Episode 1. I liked him too, but I was still open. I wasn’t fully sold yet. But over time, he became the emotional anchor for me.

At this point, I don’t even know if I like the show the same way without the 4th Prince.

That’s how important he is to the experience.

So when Hae Soo hesitates, doubts him, pulls away, or makes choices that negatively affect him, we feel his pain first.

That does not mean her side is wrong.

It just means a lot of people defending her are watching through what she’s going through.

They’re watching through her fear, her pressure, and the fact that she really does not have the same kind of power as these princes.

We’re reacting through Wang So feeling alone, misunderstood, rejected, or like he finally found somebody and still can’t fully reach them.

That’s why it hits us different.

And I know IU is one of the main reasons people love the show. She’s doing her job. The character is in frustrating circumstances, and sometimes her choices lead to moments where we find ourselves upset.

That doesn’t mean the writing is bad.

That means the show is working on us emotionally.

That’s the whole thing with reactions.

The show hits us emotionally, we react emotionally, and then our reaction hits y’all emotionally.

That’s why these conversations get intense.

Everybody is attached to somebody.

Some people are watching for Hae Soo.

Some people are watching for Wang So.

Some people are watching the politics.

Some people are watching the tragedy.

We’re not robots sitting there giving the final perfect take on every character. We’re reacting in real time to what hurt us, frustrated us, or moved us first.

And yeah, sometimes the first thing that comes out of our mouth is the bias.

The frustration.

The thing that triggered us.

If we stopped and explained every single angle, every episode would be two hours long. And honestly, I think some of our takes would probably be easier to understand if we had time to fully explain the whole thought.

But that’s part of the fun of reactions too.

You’re watching us feel the episode as it happens.

And y’all know how we are.

You saw all three of us cheer for Madam.

You saw us defend almost everything in Dear X.

I have a long personal history of liking morally gray characters and sometimes straight-up antagonists when I understand where they’re coming from.

So it’s not that we can’t understand complicated characters.

It’s not that we can’t understand Hae Soo.

It’s that Moon Lovers hit a nerve, and our Wang So bias was loud.

I do appreciate the comments defending Hae Soo, though, because a lot of them helped me see her side more clearly.

I still think we’re allowed to be frustrated with her in the moment.

And I also think y’all are allowed to defend her.

Both things can be true.

That’s why the show is good.

A reaction is not the final answer forever.

Hi, I haven't watched the reaction yet, just reacting to the description since I am one of the few that commented in defense of Hae Soo. A big part of why I commented on the last episode is because you asked for the people that understand Hae Soo emotionally to speak up. I really didn't feel like I commented anything that attacked you three because I honestly understand it. I am pretty sure people understanding and commenting on behalf of Hae Soo are all re-watchers. Scarlet Heart was my first real good k-drama, that made me cry for real, and feel something, I have watched it a ton and I still remember how it made me feel the first time I did. I believe it's an universal opinion to not understand Hae Soo on first watch and it's okay. I didn't align with Hae Su that much on first watch and I felt like the unfairness that So endures again and again and his agency, makes him easy to feel for and root for. The fustration towards Hae Soo is a canon event I fear, she didn't love So first and it seems like he loves her harder. In a romance drama that's deadly... The reason why I like you guys's reactions is because you react so passionately and through those I can see/feel the appreciation you have for the drama in general. So I hope you didn't take any of it personally! Also I appreciate the speed with which we're getting the episodes

hahaa I love that Director and Adorkable didn't fall to peer pressure xD hoping that Hae Su meets some bandits out there haha that's my kind of petty

I went back and read your comment and I understand what happened. The content of what you wrote was fine. But there was a person talking back-and-forth with you and this person was basically venting about us and they were calling us out for criticizing her and nitpicking and this person was frustrated with us. When I summarize the conversation, I grouped you guys together. But yeah, you’re answering the question , but the other person saw it as an opportunity to criticize our reaction If you go back and read it, you’ll see what’s going on So yeah, you’re cool

YaBoyRockLee Reactions

It’s suggested that we stop criticizing her and be more understanding. I don’t know if it’s obvious based on how I start my videos. Lol. We/I struggle to actively understand her and my conclusions are criticism

After reading the description, I really hope comments like these don't make you second-guess yourselves. The whole point of reaction videos is seeing and hearing authentic reactions, not having everyone agree on the same things. That's what I appreciate about this channel, you don't blindly side with the protagonists, and you're willing to call things out when necessary. 👏 I absolutely love Moon Lovers and have been VERY vocal about it (ask @fireheart) loool, but I'd never expect everyone to feel the same way about the characters. If anything, knowing that you guys enjoy morally gray characters makes your perspective even more interesting to hear.

First of all, I’m having a blast watching your reaction. I prefer watching the reactions of people I disagree with—it’s just more interesting to me, and it allows me to explore different points of view:) As for me, I watch this show solely for Wang So!💞💞💞 He is my all-time favorite character, and Lee Joon Gi is my absolute favorite actor. Without him, I wouldn’t care about this drama at all. Even so, I think So is the reddest of red flags, at least when it comes to relationships, which is why I understand Soo. She is under no obligation to be his surrogate mother, therapist, and lover all at once, yet he demands all of that unconditionally—plus, he is highly emotionally immature, vengeful and aggressive. Not to mention he sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill the man she loved at the time, and he also threatened her own life several times. Now he doesn't listen to her and they don't really talk. I simply believe Soo has every right to be exhausted and every right to leave him. Her happiness is just as important, and that doesn't make her a bad person at all.

Serko

AMEN to that! Especially, if people that don't know the actual history frame my guy Wang So as Hitler haha

Azahar Rahim

I am glad you all find out so much earlier that Hae Soo has been the villain all along....This girl has no redeemable quality and I have watched these shows few time already.....furthermore, So is well suited with the empress, both cunning, devious and somewhat evil...unlike the weak Hae Soo....The fact that So did not command a death punishment to both Hae Soo and Uk was mindboggling.....

Serko

haha finally someone that gets it lol back to back treason all the time and begging for other men all the time he should execute them all xD

Sallie Andrea

Just read your note. Love the insight. Glad to hear more detail on your perspective

It’s kinda crazy how differently they understand and interpret this drama storyline compared to Koreans. It was shocking that So didn’t know that Haesu and Uk had something going on between them, but I wouldn’t want anything about this drama to be changed. It’s well-written and casted drama for sure.
