"Order a croissant - it's Paris for Christ's sake!" Mom yelled at me from the idling cab. "And hurry the fuck up, our Louvre tickets are for 11:30!" When I got to the end of the line, I ordered two croissants and a baguette. I brought the goods out to the cab. "I have to go to the bathroom, be right back." Mom was screaming so loud, the cabby had to shush her in French. I walked to the back of the bakery, where there was no bathroom and discreetly exited through the door on the other side of the store. I walked quickly at first. I felt a rush, blending into the street scene in my thrifted overcoat and messy chignon. Then the thought of my mother coming up behind me and pulling me into the nylon void of her windbreaker and fanny pack sent a chill down my spine. I broke into a sprint. I took the Metro to a random stop. The Marais. I sat at a cafe and ordered a white wine. It was 11:21am. I lit a cigarette from the pack I bought on the way from the train. I inhaled deeply and broke into a frenzied fit of coughs. I'd never smoked before. A man in his forties with wrinkles and and a toned yoga body sat at the table next to mine. He smelled like vetiver and moss. I wanted to unbutton my shirt and expose my breasts to him.
