Ariel

You got the “vibes” right- the nation in the show is fictional, but heavily based on imperial China. Most of the names sound Chinese- in fact, mao means “cat” in Chinese, and when Maomao is “chibi” and you see a tail, you’ll also notice some hair on the top of her head shaped into cat ears lol- and yes, she is very smart about most things, but her curiosity can sometimes get the better of her- I’m sure you know the saying about curiosity and cats

Ariel

You might recognize some of the voices in this- Maomao has the same VA as Diane in Seven Deadly Sins, her “gossip buddy” Xiaolan has Hawk’s VA-Lady Gyokuyou (pink haired concubine she now works for) has Frieren’s VA, and Lady Lihua (blue haired concubine whose baby died) has Mikasa’s (AoT) VA

Ariel

It’s not something people usually catch on a first watch, but when all of the servant girls were gathered, you see Gaoshun (Jinshi’s assistant) looking at the back of Maomao’s skirt, and you can see some faint stitches on it (evidence of that skirt being the one used for material to write the notes she left lol)

Ariel

And if you didn’t notice it at the end of episode 2, he stole one of her “midnight snacks” lol

Ariel

And you asked about Xiaolan’s age, saying she looks 10- but I’m thinking she’s probably the same age as Maomao, or possibly slightly younger, and Maomao is currently 17

i love how characters faces completely switch up the animation style for humor in this series
