Travis rose the illusionary wind, arriving just behind Zodiac. He couldn’t see the old man’s expression, but from the color of his neck and ears, he expected it was pretty furious.

“I’ll save every one of you from him!” Travis picked up the necromancer’s words.

Vincent was pointing at Zodiac with a recently healed infected sobbing in relief beside him, and a norworm crushed under his foot. There was a circle of civilians around him, their attention directed towards Zodiac.

He looks kind of…heroic right now? Oh…son of a bitch, Travis thought, echoing Zodiac’s earlier shout as the details lined up.

The chaotic scene around them quieted at the necromancer’s words, every nerve focused on watching Zodiac’s reaction.

“So…” Zodiac said, his gnarled fist clenched into an iron knot.

“Someone finally figured it out!”

Confusion flashed across Vincent’s face for an instant, but no one except Travis was watching him. They were watching Lord Zodiac.

“Now that it’s come to this, I suppose the only thing left to do is to make sure there are no surviving hosts who know the truth!”

“What!?” Travis squawked as Zodiac flew up into the air, unleashing his telekinetic threads and tearing apart the nearby crystal buildings before flinging them at Vincent and the surrounding Climbers.

The seven flaming undead flashed into existence and batted the building-sized chunks of crystal aside, shielding the crowd from Zodiac’s sudden betrayal.

Some of the building chunks simply detonated as they got close to Vincent and the civilians he was protecting.

He’s…protecting them? What-

Explosions and flaming crystal filled Travis’s eyes and ears as the scene devolved into chaos.

What…what the Abyss is going on!? Travis thought a moment before he felt a gnarled hand grab him by the collar.

“Erk!” Travis grunted as his collar tightened on his neck and the two of them began to fly away at outrageous speeds.

Reminds me of getting dragged along by Will. Just another thing that reminds me of how I don’t have what it takes to be a Lord.

“C’mon kid, we’re getting the fuck outta here!” Zodiac shouted as they flew.

Travis managed to get his bearings just as a telekinetic thread wrapped around his torso and the speed increased further.

They sped away from Zodiac’s stronghold until it was a pinprick of light in the distance.

They dodged behind a distant island, Zodiac tore apart a monster, covered them with black constellation blood and then the two took a wildly different route, finally stopping for rest several hours later.

Zodiac collapsed against a crystal wall beside Travis, the two of them sharing a moment of silence as they caught their breath and organized their thoughts.

“What was that!?” Travis demanded once he caught his breath, pointing back at the distant pinprick of light with a shaking finger.

“Every dance requires two partners. Every play needs a villain.” Zodiac said with a shrug. “If he stole the role of hero, I have to be the bad guy for the audience, or else everything breaks down.”

Travis blinked. He didn’t get it. At all.

“The-what? Are you sick, old man? Did your brain just shit itself? This is bad, this is so godsdamned bad!” Travis said, his voice rising in pitch without his permission.

“True.” Zodiac mused, reaching into his vest coat pocket and pulling out some chew, offering a bit to Travis, which Travis firmly turned down.

“Then why the Abyss did you do that!?” Travis demanded before pulling himself slightly away from Zodiac. “Unless…Are you actually…”

“I’m not a norworm. Don’t be an idiot, boy. Despite your cleverness with illusions, you’re still inexperienced with politics. It’s true that it’s very, very bad,” Zodiac said, glancing up at Travis. “But it’s not as bad as it could’ve been. What would have been even worse is if I had accused Vincent of being the norworm.”

Travis blinked.

“Huh?”

“The Tower doesn’t care about the reasons why a murder might take place. It doesn’t have the capacity to understand context. That’s why it only takes action when the violations are egregious.”

“If I had denied Vincent’s claims and accused him of being the norworm, the Stronghold would split into those who believed me and those who didn’t. I may have had to kill dozens of my own settlers. That would’ve been plenty for the Tower to revoke my status as a Lord.”

“Because I took the role of the villain in the worm’s little act, there is no chance of a fracture between the Stronghold’s citizens. Every single soul is united with a single common purpose…”

Zodiac grinned at him.

“To find and kill the norworm.” He finished.

“Yeah, but…they got the wrong guy.”

“Sure, they have the wrong guy now, but the worm has to maintain his charade, because the moment he slips up, he’ll have the entire, undamaged stronghold aligned against him. He’s riding a tiger, looking for a way off.”

“What if he infests all of their brains with worms!?” Travis demanded.

“They’ll betray him.” Zodiac said. “These worms are cold-blooded and logical. If he did that, they would scatter in every direction at the very least, if not try and kill him.

Zodiac tapped his skull.

“The Climbers whose skulls they’ll be stowing away in will know enough for them to understand that they’re on a time-limit until the other Lords arrive. They will also understand that if they diligently work to make Influence for him, he will spend it on a Door for himself and leave them to die. His children would have no choice but to betray him, while a human will continue working along in ignorance of the situation, believing that I’m the bad guy.”

“So by…pretending to be the bad guy…you saved a huge amount of people and locked the worm into playing the hero and protecting everyone, while you get to go off and do whatever you want?”

“Pretty much.” Zodiac said.

“That’s freakin’ brilliant!” Travis said.

“Yeah, it’s brilliant alright. Right up until he gets enough Influence to accomplish his goal, then goes ahead and kills everyone to act as a smokescreen for his escape. Like you said earlier. Not good. This was a desperate measure to keep the music playing a little longer. He thought he had checkmate, but it was just check.”

“You’re mixing your metaphors,” Travis said.

“Shaddap. I’m tired.” Zodiac muttered, glancing around the island they were taking shelter on. “Your illusions can keep watch, yeah?”

“Yeah.”

The ancient Lord grabbed a nearby slab of crystal, fluffed it a bit then put it under his head, closing his eyes.

That’s gotta be supremely uncomfortable.

“I never would’ve thought of you as someone who could sleep rough.” Travis said.

“Even I was a Climber once. I’ve slept rough plenty of times in my day. Best to get sleep now while we can.” Zodiac grumbled, turning away from Travis.

Yeah, he’s not wrong. Will took years to sort out the stronghold he took from Caddock. Vincent wouldn’t be able to organize the Climbers instantly. They had a bit of time. At least enough to catch a nap and refresh their minds.

Might as sleep while I can.

Mirage

70 Charges remaining.

Travis summoned an enormous down mattress and jumped into it with an audible ‘FOOF’.

“What the-“ Zodiac sat up and turned to look at Travis snuggling his way under the covers.

The old man’s eyes were wide and bloodshot as he stared at Travis from where he lay on the solid crystal.

“Oh, I’m sorry, you probably wanted some privacy.” Travis said, putting up a gaudy folding screen between the two of them by extending the bed illusion across a hair-thin thread.

“Kid.” Zodiac’s voice called from the other side of the thin paneling.

“Eh?” Travis asked, prying open an eye.

“Make me a bed.”

“You’ve slept rough before. You can handle it.”

“I’m three hundred years old, everyone I’ve ever loved is long dead, I’ve got every form of arthritis known to man, random swellings in multiple internal organs, my whole body hurts every waking moment, and it’s not getting any better sleeping on the DAMN GROUND, make me a godsdamned bed!”

Travis put his fingers in his ears as the Lord’s volume increased until he was causing the island itself to shake.

“Fine, fine,” Travis muttered, extending the illusion out to form a bed on the other side of the divider.

On the other side of the divider, Travis heard the rustling of the old man slipping under the covers without a single word of thanks.

“He’s grouchy.” Mabel said from where he’d summoned her under the covers. “Well, forget about that. Let me help you…relax before you go back out into the world.”

She began peeling the covers away, sensually unhooking the buttons of his vest.

“Me too!” his head maid said as she appeared standing beside the bed. “I’ll handle his lower half.”

“Me three!” another maid said as she appeared, yanking his shirt over his head.

A few minutes later, the divider slammed open, revealing Zodiac glaring down at Travis getting his back, legs, shoulders and neck massaged with oils by a gaggle of giggling maids.

“Eh?” Travis started awake, the drool puddle on his pillow betraying his sleep.

“Why are you like this!?” Zodiac demanded.

Travis shrugged and went back to sleep.

Bring your own masseuses with you when you go on the run you if you’re so jealous. Travis thought, rolling his closed eyes. Not like we can thwart the necromancer better by suffering needlessly.

Outside the Tower, another necromancer was being born.

Jorn gulped and placed the brightly glowing sphere on the altar. A moment later, a bright light shone down and the sphere disappeared in an instant.

He couldn’t tell if it made a sound when the altar consumed the orb, because his heart was hammering in his ears so hard.

Sacrifice detected…attempting to generate Class Seed… Success

Generating seed….

Seed of Undeath

1 Strength, 2 Resistance, 2 Focus.

Undeath, Regeneration, Lifesteal.

With trembling fingers, he reached into the unsealed bag and took out a chunk of preserved meat, placing it on the altar.

Sacrifice detected…attempting to generate Class Seed… Success

Generating seed….

Kincaid, Lord of Flesh

2 Strength, 2 Resistance

Gluttony, growth, creation.

Where did he GET these? Jorn thought, his entire body erupting into goosebumps. These Sacrifices did not sound like the sort of thing you could go out and buy.

He’d finally accepted Anna’s offer because he’d found out Lily was set to immigrate as support staff for the new Stronghold, and…the opportunity to meet a hero of legend was too good to be true.

They’d put him under Contract, and he’d signed a deal to get an experimental Class. If it turned out to be worthless, he’d be given plenty of levels to get by on just his base stats, a sizeable purse of cash and a restriction to never tell anyone about his Class.

If it was useful, he was under commission to work at the stronghold for a decade, then he would be able to renegotiate his contract after that.

I’ll be in my mid-twenties. I’ll be an old man by then…I hope this is worth it. There was no backing out now. Only way out was through getting a Class.

Jorn fished through the bag and grabbed the last ingredient. A slightly fishy-smelling chunk of preserved pale flesh with a bit of black skin on the outside.

Sacrifice detected…attempting to generate Class Seed… Success

Generating seed….

Congratulations, you are now a level 1 Abyssal Guide.

“Excuse me?” Jorn blurted at the ominous-sounding Class name.

Cyrus

Anyway, thank you for the chapter!

2026-09-05 04:00 is that last sacrifice Will's hand infected from floor 8?

Ethan B.

TFTC!! Can't wait to see what monster they made!

Ryan Nicolle

It’s Attrition no? The raid boss that was a massive worm- thing, capable of flowing through dirt with ease and ate all of Will’s crops

Exrotes

Triple Raid Boss? Good for raw power but I'd think it'd lose the undead theming with Kincaid and Attrition both being based on uncontrollable growth of life. I'd think dropping Kincaid for a powerful non-raid boss undead sacrifice would probably be better, maybe one of the mummies from Akresh's tomb or maybe a carrion eater of some kind to go with both death and hunting.

SunderGoldmane

The seed of undeath is straight 10,000 year long (fact check?) distilation process man made sacrifice. I think its strong enough to turn any resulting class in an undead theme.

Garnet of Flame

The goal was a necromancy’s with wide area control so they gave necromancy and area control with the seed and attrition, not sure what the exact purpose of Kincaid is, or if that was just a see what happens.

Milan Seyed Mahmoud

Its only a 10000 year process because the machine didn't get cleaned for several times that!

Stanisław Drewienkowski

Well, that certenialy is an amazing stat growth, only Kincaid is „subpar” from full IVs. That kinesthetic might need some Free Points tough, not a crucial stat for necromancer (but maybe gor a Guide?), better still to have the stat that stops you from tripping over your feet and run away when undead got slaugtered

Gorane

Creation goes together with creating undead

Gorane

Remember, the class is more about what ability you pick and what choices you make in upgrading the skills. Will had skills from each of his sacrifices offered at lvl 1, he can for sure pick a necromancer skill

Gorane

This is cool, but it would take like 45 days for this boy to get to 10th floor. So it is hard for me to imagine he will be able to help w the norworm, unless the worm gets delayed A LOT

Gorane

Also it seems abit unrealistic that Zodiac does not havr any relatives or second in commands or lovers that he cares about. I know it would have conplicated the story but he should have had something

David Giles

He did. Alicia died and is currently unable to act as an heir, and is fleeing out of the Tower as we speak. His current plan was to wait out his isolation for a few decades so his grandkids could act as his lieutenants.

Asheric

he has a daughter...

Gorane

Again, it is very unbelievable that a 200 year old lords only relative is a 20 year old Alicia. He should have generations of children but that is hard to write so it didnt happen. And both of you didnt adress that Zodiac didnt have any noteworthy Vassals - only 7th floor Wyrds have Arms and Void, who are almost lord level but why dont others have such climbers working under them?

Joseph Snyder

Nah at that age when you have lived through and seen so much you would distance yourself from people. They would become employees not friends or family. Any worthwhile Vassals wouldn't be hanging out with you doing nothing. They would be off gaining XP.

Jeanean

As does growth, for the potential of self-replication, even if its not exponential.
