*REBORN HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I had no clue what to expect, but I am LIVING for this new direction! New characters, new duelist...origins? New ships and New roses...and the reveal that Anthy may know much more than she's letting on to Utena?!

Take a drink every time I say, "WHAT?!" in this episode and you may be in trouble! This second act is already off with a BANG -- not binging is going to be hard!

I could write whole essays about this arc, I'm very excited to see you're thoughts about it. So much mystery and new information. I'm so impatient I don't want to wait another week lol

Now this is how you do a new arc! 100 boys buried alive, the shoes, the CHAIRS (hello Madoka), total insanity! And let's not forget one of the worst job interviews you could have. I got a little Haunted Mansion feel from the elevator ride as you really start to wonder if she's actually descending 100 floors downward or what is going on! Anthy's awkward reply to Kanae's "we'll really be sisters!" ... ... *birds chip in silence* ... "Sure." perfect haha. I feel like I'm going to learn so much this arc, the show's story seems to really have moved on from the new freshman feel it had last arc, even if Utena was a 2nd year, and become more sinister. Anthy feels a bit like Kyubey too, with her knowledge - only telling things you know enough about to ask questions to, keeping the majority of what she knows to herself. Loved all the WHAT?!s!, definitely master level drinking game material. I didn't catch the meaning behind removing the glasses and I do feel even worse for Anthy now - learning things like that which I miss really elevate reactions for me.

Ah yes our proper introduction to Akio. To add another layer to the already gross relationship he has with Anthy, we also need to remember that she’s 14 and all we know is that Akio is an adult. So on every level, there really is no possibility for consent. He is the only relevant adult character interacting with these teenagers so that’s important to keep in mind. Can’t wait for future reactions truly!

Ah thanks - I was having a little trouble placing them when I wrote the comment, and didn't know if it was a regional thing - how the grades/schools might split or not split. So many characters look even too old to be in high school, let alone middle school! I think maybe it's a generational thing too, like the drawing style in Berserk and this and other older anime tends to have a more mature look to me, than the newer style in Madoka - and newer shows, where I believe Madoka is supposed to be the same age? But put Madoka next to Utena, and they don't really look like it!

Oh, definitely. I get it. I just stress it because it is important to keep in mind the relative ages of the characters in Utena since they have a big impact on characterization. Like for example, Touga's suave fuckboi image in the Miki episode is pretty deliberately undercut by the fact that he's a 17 year old lounging around half naked in the piano room making eyes at a 13 year old Miki after banging his twin sister 😬

Ahhhh thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I'm soo excited to get to the future weeks this month!

To address both your comments, I agree - the animation style makes them all look 20 - hahaha, even if they are in middle school! I forget and will forget in future discussions that Utena is in middle school, thinking she's a first year in high school, it's good to get reminded that! So thank you both! So much wacky symbolism this episode but the comparison of Anthy to Kyubey is FASCINATING and feeds into my "alien" theory hahaha so thanks for that - I'll have to bring that up as well! There was so much this episode that was hilarious and insane - it has me really excited to see where the rest of the series goes! Thanks so much for the comment and kind words!

Thanks for clarifying that! I constantly forget it and keep thinking Utena is a high school first year, so I appreciate the comment!
