I definitely appreciate the term of Daddy Jing. It does still fit for Scorpion King calling Zhao Jing "yifu" 😁 I was giggling so hard at you falling for Ye Bai Yi pretending to fall. He really is mean for pulling that. The crossing reminds me so much of Monty Python and the Holy Grail too. Loved you making that reference. I love Chengling's Dads' immediate focus being saving him, and entrusting Ye Bai Yi to help him 🥺 Gotta love the way they played the trope of being in the dark and feeling a hand holding one of their hands 🥰 Romania: Quit flirtingly looking at each other while you're killing zombies! Feels like you're channeling your inner Ye Bai Yi there 🤣 The set designers really did an amazing job with making the Longyuan Cabinet both creepy and intriguing with all the mechanical parts. All the hand holding and touches this episode 😍 First watch I was squinting hoping they wouldn't take Chengling's eyes. Eyes and hands are my no-go for injuries. Ye Bai Yi with that comment about Chengling "I'll owe you another" 😂 Don't think Wen Ke Xing and Zhou Zishu want a new one. At least with how he treats Long Xiao is how he treats other people too; no discrimination here with this boomer 😅 Romania: I'm glad we're watching this before Father's Day! But hey, Chengling's Dads protecting him are at least decent father figures this episode and so deserving of celebration. We'll just ignore Long Que and Long Xiao's really messed up relationship 😅 I'm so glad with your comments about Long Xiao before that no-one spoiled the reveal of his true character and truly how villainous he can be. I do love his character because, like you said it does make you question nature versus nurture. To me, with Long Que creating the puppet version of his son (and it not being an able-bodied puppet), it kind of suggests that it was nurture (or rather a lack of good nurturing) that led to him becoming so monstrous in his actions. It's subtle commentary on society's view on disabled people and how it can affect a person's actions and feelings about both society and themselves, versus internalised hatred of yourself affecting how you view other people's opinions about you and so deciding to act out in such ways that you think is how others expect you to act because of your own negative view. Both create a cycle of continued negative behaviours and opinions by both society as a whole and the disabled person. On my first watch I also expected Long Que to be dead too. And with the reveal of Long Xiao's character I almost expected him to have turned his father into one of his puppets. I blame Doctor Who for having those thoughts 😆 Like you I also appreciate the series slowly developing/revealing Long Xiao's more villainous nature. I do love stories giving a slow build to a reveal like that over just introducing a character as a villain and we as the audience having to just take that at face value. The other reason I like it is because Long Xiao is a disabled character. If they'd introduced him and made him as overtly monstrous as he is here in this episode with trying to kill everyone/torture Chengling, it would have left me feeling a bit iffy about if it was an ableist choice to make a visibly disabled character be a villain or not. Instead with how the show portrayed his character it leaves the audience considering the nature versus nurture debate on what led Long Xiao to acting how he does. Also with giving us more information about the Healer Valley's text simply restoring a person to how they were before at the same time as showing us Long Xiao's more villainous side could be seen as a way to show that being born as he was is not something that needs to be "cured". Honestly for me Wen Ke Xing being the more frantic parent about Ye Bai Yi taking his time over the traps made sense to me. It's already been established that Zhou Zishu is the stricter parent and Wen Ke Xing is more lackadaisical in his parenting 😂 From my own experiences if something happens strict parents, like Zhou Zishu, can be a bit calmer and level-headed, whereas the parents who give their child more leeway can be much more emotional which prevents them from attacking the problem more pragmatically.

What d’you mean? African or European swallow? 🤣 You’re absolutely right about the levels of flirting here. I don’t think even Wangxian got this lovey dovey while fighting zombies, lol! I think you may be right about the two minions attacking Chengling. If anyone could figure out how to turn real people into puppets, or make puppets look that real, it would be this villain. According to Netflix, this episode was the last one I got around to during my first attempt to watch this series. I look forward to sailing into unknown plot lines with you and everyone else here. ^.^ Thanks for the video!

I feel the same about the cgi in this episode, like it’s fine, but Ye Bai Ye using all of his focus to dodge a singular chain dangling from the ceiling while Chengling was dodging much more dangerous spikes from the floor is like, what lol

AHAHAHA, Poor Chengling - he was put through the wringer against all other characters whether he liked it or not! XD Bless him! Thank you for the comment and pointing that out!

I don’t think the scene with ZZS and YBY in episode 13 is really a cut sleeve moment. It looked more like YBY was pulling or maybe tearing some kind of fabric from ZZS’s chest? I didn’t come up with this idea myself, just read it in someone else’s comment, but they pointed out that there are two “cut sleeve” moments in the show so far, and each one could symbolize when one of them starts to realize their feelings for the other. WKX cut ZZS’s sleeve back in episode 5, so he had that moment pretty early on. Meanwhile, ZZS cuts WKX’s sleeve in this episode. Of course, he already liked WKX before this, but I think it wasn’t until recently that he really admitted it to himself. Like he tells WKX in this episode, his life feels more valuable with WKX by his side. The flirting is off the charts aaaaaa! I adore how much they act like a little found family, especially with YBY being the resident grumpy grandpa. And I love that the moment they fall, ZZS and WKX immediately understand each other and jump into action to save CL, no questions asked. From there on, they just keep fighting in perfect sync. It was kinda cute how ZZS mistook the zombie hand for WKX and just let it grab him because he thought WKX was scared lol As for Long Xiao, I have mixed feelings. I agree with all your points, it totally makes sense that he acts the way he does, especially given how much resentment he carries toward his father. He was probably discriminated against and suffered a lot in his life, and the one person who was his family, who was so kind to other people, did not help him (from his perspective). It works within the story. But at the same time, the trope of a disabled character becoming a villain because they hate themselves and want to be “cured” is just... exhausting. It leaves a bit of a sour taste for me. I don't mind him being a villain, but the motivation just made me go "ah, this again, what did I expect?". This is probably my least favorite aspect of the show tbh

Thank you for the comment and kind words! I love that you got the Monty Python reference! The two of them are SO flirtatious but I live for it! The entire route of puppetry in this episode was creepy, creative, and fun! It worked so well in this episode! Oohhhh, I’m so excited that you’re walking into unknown waters from here on out with me, I just adore it! Thank you and I hope you like where we go to from here!

YBY is SUCH a mean boomer gremlin! 😛 But yes, the Monty Python reference is REAL! Maybe I DO channel him throughout this episode! XD Chengling, you deserve better in this series, but at least your dads and grandpa are all about rescuing you! YES, THOUGH, Hand and Eye torture is NOT my thing at all! I did like the set design in this episode! Yes, allll the skin to skin contact this episode! Shippers were FEASTING this episode! I SO blame Doctor Who for making me think that Long Que could have been a puppet, too! I loved your commentary in this comment! That is EXACTLY what I was going for in these last several episodes! You worded that gracefully! I agree, too, the “parental dynamic with WKX vs. ZZS” over Chengling makes so much sense and I really like how the show handles it! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

romaniablack

Okay, I could see that about episode 13! I agree that each of the “actual” cut sleeve moments are definitely indicative of them admitting feelings about each other! The Flirting is SOOO good in this! I agree 100% about the villain because they hate themselves trope - that’s why I wanted to give him more of a benefit of the doubt at first that he’d be more…complex? That’s not what has ended up happening, which is a little sad, but YES, that “this again, huh?” Is SUCH a feeling! I agree, it’s the one point of this show that I tug my shirt collar at a little, but otherwise, such a great episode! Thank you for the comment!
