*ETERNAL HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

As a massive NGE fan, this series was such a fun glimpse into Anno's "start" with his style and direction and what an explosive way to conclude this miniseries! I was clutching pearls (haha), shocked, and fangirling the whole way! This has been such an exciting journey with you all to watch this classic gem!

Also, special thanks to patron  ⁨@_sunspots⁩  for providing the files of the extra "Science Lessons" segments, spanning from 1988 to 2012! Wow! This was a special treat to help round out the reactions and discussions for this series!

You watched the wrong version of the last episode. If I had know I would have sent you the correct version. Ugh. First of all, thank you for tolerating the fanservice, I know it's obnoxious and distracting. I wish I could say it was product of it's time but let's be real, anime isn't much better today, they just can't get away with as much since it airs on TV. I like cute anime girls as much as the next person, but none of it was really necessary. I think the characters and character development in this series are second to none, the pacing is great, it's very creative and keeps you guessing. One thing I mentioned in an earlier comment, I love how strange this show is. It starts off almost like a porn parody of a high school sport anime and then morphs into an epic space opera. You can tell they really were just flying by the seat of their pants. Noriko is one of my favorite anime characters of all time and this is one of my favorite shows. The ending never fails to make me cry. Thank you for the reactions!

The version I saw changed from black and white to color after the two escape pods launched themselves toward Earth. This reminded me of the excitement I felt in the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz," when the film went to color as soon as it entered the world of Oz. (Probably, with this version, you didn't have any doubts about their life or death.)

Loved the reaction and discussion! This has been a really fun mecha journey and I’m so happy to hear you had a good time with this show! 🥰 “15 years later?!” “12,000 years later?!?” 🤣 Time is a cruel mistress to the very end in this show. Really love the choice of going from the full colour spectrum of all the previous episodes to this black and white episode, makes it all that much more beautifully sombre. And the ‘welcome back’ lighting up at the end is such a wonderful moment. 🥰 I really love how well the relationship between Noriko, Amano and Jung is developed throughout the series – such a great presentation of peer mentorship, rivalry and developing respect for just 6 short episodes. And Noriko especially is well developed, and her journey and emotional growth are treated with sincerity. While for me personally GunBuster doesn’t rank very highly in terms of mecha, it is an important work for the genre and has been quite influential I feel, ambitious and technically innovative. It was one of the earlier mecha works which allowed female protagonists to show true development related to what was actually happening in the plot. But – those characters still were not allowed to have that development without having to pay objectifying and exploitative ‘rent’. Thank you for consistently calling the show out and not letting it off the hook. This has been an excellent discussion series! 🥰 Many things to dissect, hype, hilarity, character work – I wasn’t sure how it would land when it won, so am very pleased you’ve enjoyed it! 💙

Oh really?! Ooohhhh - I'm curious if there are "multiple" versions available! Thank you for the comment!

Thank you so much! This series was so great! I never thought the black and white was a budget issue - I said in the discussion that’s what people probably WOULD think, but I thought it was Anno literally making a stylistic decision - I talk a lot in my NGE reactions and discussions about Anno’s decisions being misconstrued as low budget. ^^ That is so cool about the special ink, though! I love that! I love the callbacks to old school Sci-Fi as well! I just loved the “Welcome Back” and the hopeful message it brings for humanity - we really needed it in this! That’s cool about the idea that language has changed - as an English teacher, I know how much the language has changed over 2000 years, so 12,000? It’s fascinating to think about! I have watched the whole series based on the streaming service that provides the episodes, which I noted in episode 1. It’s still the same content, so I don’t think I missed out on anything but no one told me there was a better version, offered the files to download, or told the moderator to make sure I watched the 16:9 version, so there was no helping it, I suppose - but thank you for the comment and the kind words! This series was so good and I’m glad I watched it!

It’s still the same content in the end and I enjoyed it, so I don’t think I missed out on anything but thank you for the comment and the kind words! This series was so good and I’m glad I watched it! Yeahhh, I’ve been watching the same CR streamed versions the whole time and no one ever asked the mod if I needed the other versions, but I don’t feel I missed out - one day, I’ll have to look up the other version and watch it. ^^ Honestly, the fan service was fun to talk about - I’ve seen MUCH more obnoxious and menacing - here, it was more ridiculous than anything - but at least there was a PLOT and great character development that overrode it. And yeah, luckily, there is a LOT more shows that do positive change with characters, especially female characters, but then there is still the same garbage alongside - progress is still progress, though! ^^ I’ll take it! And people are more vocal about the garbage and calling it out, which is nice. Gunbuster was way more than the fan service and so good! The development and PACING - the pacing really was fantastic throughout! And the MOMENT I knew Anno was at the helm, I knew it would be weird, but in the BEST way! There’s a chaos to his earlier projects that I really enjoy. It definitely keeps you on the edge of your seats! Noriko is so sweet and I loved her character - she inspires me! Thank you so much for the kind words and I’m glad you enjoyed the reactions!

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! This was SUCH a fun journey and I really enjoyed it - more than I expected!! The 12,000 year time jump was INSANITY and I was not prepared for it! I love the somber choice of the black and white and it helped bring “home” the final message, no pun intended! Noriko and her relationship with Amano and Jung were so well-done in this! I just love the themes, the character development, and how they were portrayed throughout this! “Sincerity” is such a great word to talk about with Noriko and her journey in this series! I can see how other mecha series might be “better” but I love that I got to see such an influential work that set the stage for so many other series - seeing one of the “classics” is such a great feeling! And the fact that this work from the 80’s gave us a strong and developed female lead? LOVE. And yes, I think that while there still is exploitation in anime today, the important thing is to not just “accept” it and to hold it accountable - can it still be a great series, YES, but you also need to make it take responsibility for nonsense. So thank you for understanding with me! I was REALLY happy that the Wheel of Fate chose this series - I didn’t know how it would go because some comments gave me reservations, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this series! Thank you for helping to moderate and for all the support and comments!
