I think Taichi telling Chihaya what she should be doing isn't out of a possessive or controlling view. I see it as projection. He wants her to be happy and he thinks that she needs a push to achieve her goals. But in reality, it is him that needs someone to push him forward, and Chihaya does in this episode. I initially hated Sumire, well, more like I hated the idea of forcing another love triangle because Arata is too far away to have an actual impact. But in this very episode, I once again learned to trust the Mangaka.

I agree I wasnt a big fan of Sumire either but that does change. I think this episode is so interesting First of all Taichi saying what he said to Sumire I think he intentionally said something hurtful and I get it Sumire saying that Taichi could get any girlfriend he wanted is kind of boxing Taichi into a stereotype even if it's unintentional and it's something that he has put up with for a long time being only looked at it in a surface level way and so him throwing it back at her is him kinda saying how do you feel when I say that to you and Sumire doesn't like that but she wants to prove that her feelings aren't fickle. To be honest it's season 2 and do I think the author intends to have Sumire be a serious contender in this love triangle not really but I could be wrong and regardless she is an interesting foil to Taichi who similarly to her wants to be a hopeless romantic and has joined the karuta club initially for love

Now I like that this episode introduces that everyone has different agendas with the first years I think Kana is pretty straightforward Tsutomu is about efficiency there is a bit of projection but I think it's more efficiency and not taking too many risks that are his priority with two months to the tournament let's keep the same room and utilize the same members mixing things up can lead to instability for the tournament ahead. With Nishida he is focused on the team tournament Nishida at the moment does not have any plans to be Master so it makes sense. Now Taichi wants Chihaya to focus on being Queen and there are specific moments he thinks about such as her crying when she loses to Shinobu. Now I agree that Taichi is mostly projecting he's not trying to be controlling or possessive For Taichi winning has been everything until recently and now that he has experienced failure the tears and all and vowed not to run away he doesn't want Chihaya to have regrets like he did and lose out on being Queen at a crucial time because he knows from experience that the longer you stall is the harder it becomes to get there. He also feels that with losing to overcome that feeling one has to be more absorbed in going for the win similarly to how he becomes absorbed in his mind Palace mid game and do everything possible to win. Taichi has always been the type of person to not leave anything to chance. I think as well that this is the first time Chihaya has proclaimed her goals to everyone on the team last season even when everyone had these different ideas as to why she played karuta she never as far as I remember clearly stated that these were her motivations other than being Queen or winning the high school tournament. Her wanting the best results all around creating a high school powerhouse winning the tournament and individuals and wanting Taichi to reach class A makes her ambitions fully clear to everyone and dispels thoughts of her just being simply optimistic and not having well stated goals. Taichi specifically now sees oh you're not just being an airhead and being distracted you actually are passionate about all aspects of karuta and yes he knew this before but this moment at least for me cements that for Taichi and the rest of the members. Now Taichi while he is seeing things in a romantic light isn't wrong that Chihaya is thinking of him. Chihaya isn't wishing for Taichi to make class A just for strategy at the moment they are friends and she wants him to achieve the rank because she cares about him and she sees how badly he wants it. After his recent loss she stated how Taichi and her are under alot of pressure and I'm sure she wants that pressure to have some pay off by him being rewarded by reaching Class A I think that a part of Taichi easily gives up on his goals and sort of vicariously lives through helping Chihaya achieve her goals so I'm glad he has a revelation that he needs to think about himself more.

At first, I got so confused how Sports Karuta is different from Shougi/Igo because they value manner well but differently For example, in Shougi/Igo, the loser has to say “I lost to you” to the winner In Sports Karuta, both of players have to say thank you at the same time In Sports Karuta, there's no Kamiza, upper sheet, and Shimoza, inferior sheet They are equally competitors In Shougi/Igo, there are Kamiza and Shimoza, but usually they are not determined yet The person who comes early sits Shimoza and waits to the other come However, the sheets are clearly designated Usually the title holder sits Kamiza And so on But now I got used to Sports Karuta and I'm getting to love it I'm fascinated by Chihaya's dream BTW, this chour, Chihayahuru Meguri weekly drama, which is the story of 10 years later of Manga story is aired The story itself is independent from manga The whole story is the filler But the actors who acts in the movie show up and the story the mangaka defined is passed down to the director, the producer, and the audience Chihayahuru is still ongoing project and I cherish its momentum

Also, Taichi saying “you have a lot of choices” to Sumire is an indirect phrase of “I'm not interested with you” Yes, Japanese like indirect phrases, especially in saying “No”

Oh, we're back! This first episode of the season was NOT what I was expecting but I loved it so much. I certainly laughed a ton. Kana setting the scheme of promoting the club by letting everyone see the two most attractive members is quite the dubious and calculated move, and I love that for her. She might be all about the rules and being proper, but she is not above being a little bit dubious to get her way. I LOVED Chihaya in this episode so much. She loves Karuta so much, and wants to do what's best for the club, not just herself, to make these kids love karuta as much as she does; and now, she's also fighting for it, for everyone to have their best time with karuta. i hope this means that she is realizing that maybe being queen is not exactly her dream, even if she still really wants to get there because that means that she gets to fight the best person at karuta, someone that loves the sport as much as she does, but that she just loves karuta so much and wants everyone else to love it as well. Honestly, she reminded me a bit of Kuroo from Haikyuu in that sense. Yes! Chihaya is acting like a coach, and she even said that she wants to come back after graduating and coaching the karuta club. I am obsessed with that idea because I think it suits her so well. I think she has the passion and love to be a great teacher/coach, and experience can help her fill in the blanks as well as some classes on teaching. I think Chihaya is nurturing enough for that to work really well for her, and would be an awesome development for her character. Sumire is a character that I was ready to not like when we first see her but ended up loving so much in the end. While I don't know if I ship her with Taichi just yet (I'm still a hard core Taichi/Chihaya shipper), though you made compelling points; I think it'll be fun and interesting to see how her interest plays with Taichi's fixation on Chihaya. My favorite moment of the episode was Sumire reading that poem and having a deeply personal moment. Because, YES, that's what poetry is about, and what karuta helps you connect to. Seeing all the different goals that the current members of the club have is, in my opinion, a great way to set up their arcs for the season. Will they come around Chihaya's view of things and be more team players? Or will they double down on their own ambitions and play more individualistic? Funnily enough, karuta gives room for both takes, as it's as much a team sport as it is a solo one, and that is an interesting dynamic to explore.

I think you mean Taichi, but I agree that it’s projection - it’s just - she doesn’t know that and it can come across as that. He definitely needs to still sort himself out, but we’re only STARTING season 2, so we have a long way to go and I look forward to Taichi’s character development! Y’all know him from what you see down the road, and I’m just reacting episode to episode, so just let me cook on my thoughts on him and they’ll definitely develop along with the show. I honestly LOVE Sumire but I see where you’re coming from! Yes, trust the process! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

Yes, it’s realistic and cool to see how everyone has a different goal in mind! I agree that Taichi is projecting, but of course, Chihaya and no one else but the audience knows that for sure and in the discussion, what I mean when I say that about him is if I just “heard” him say those things to me, I would think it sounds a little possessive and controlling…which, to me it would. I agree with what you said about him and his feelings for Chihaya - Taichi just needs to work on what he thinks and is projecting vs. what he actually wants to get across, which I have faith he’ll get there! But I’m going to call it like I see it in the meantime. We just have to let it cook, eh? I love Chihaya proclaiming her goals! She really is such a great character in this series and I love her ambition and optimism! I’m glad the others are realizing she’s NOT just an airhead, that was driving me CRAZY. And yes, Chihaya absolutely cares about Taichi - I don’t personally think it’s romantic like Taichi is towards her, but she does care as a friend. And we’ll see where it goes as long as I’m not spoiled! :D Thank you for the comment!

Yup, edited my comment accordingly

Oohhh, that is a cool difference between those two sports, thank you for pointing that out! 😀 That’s so cool you got to see an actual match and yessss, Chihaya’s dream is so inspiring to me. That’s interesting about the movie, so thank you for the information on it, as well! Ahhhh, and thank you for noting what that phrase means in Japanese. Let’s see how Sumire reacts with that! XD Thank you for the comment!

I really wasn’t expecting this start to the season, either, but I’m so on board as well! Kana knows how to market and I love it! YES! I love Chihaya here! She’s so sweet and her energy is infectious! I love that she’s considering what she wants and right now, it’s that she wants to get further into Karuta and wants others to love it as well! And ooohhhh, that connection to Kuroo! I LOVE that and so see it, too! 😀 I love Chihaya as a coach in this - and that she wants to help after she graduates! Sumire is such an interesting character so far! Hahaha I know you’re a hardcore Taichi/Chihaya shipper and so valid! I think she’s at least going to give Taichi a run for his money! Or at least test him in more way than one! I love how Sumire had that moment of connection with the poetry! Yesss, I love that for her! I like the idea of the arc set up for everyone - that’s a great point! I agree about having room for both takes so I’m excited to see where we go with this series! Thank you so much for the comment!
