*BEAMING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I had no idea the journey I would go on with this graphic novel, but it's a gorgeous exploration of the human condition; overcoming despair, triumphing in our own agency, and persevering through the toughest hardships to survive and thrive in a volatile world! Thank you, Sunspots, for an amazing, beautiful commission!

NOTE: I had a really hard time in editing with matching the page turns with my narration. I apologize; the editing software kept crashing on me. It may be worth it to do a split screen watch. You can access the book for free with me here: https://www.onasunbeam.com/

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

Loved the reading and discussion! Actually, this was going to be my “Febyuri” entry prior to schedule changes. 🥰 I’m really glad my expected timing worked out, I didn’t want this to be too long of a read so did time myself reading it before selecting it, but that wasn’t exactly reliable since I was familiar with the work. 😅 First of all, this was such a beautiful reading, thank you. 🥰 Honestly, it’ll help me revisit the work more often in the future, because while the art is beautiful and easy on my eyes, the font of the text most certainly isn’t! My poor eyeballs struggle with it a fair bit. Also, I love that this came out on the tail of the last episode of Stargaze, because I think there are some really fun parallels that could be drawn between this and Trigun. Both are set in worlds shaped by damage, we’ve got found family, we’ve got past trauma shaping present identity, we’ve got travel as a way of uncovering histories, etc. I can see On A Sunbeam as a distant post-Stargaze version of the universe where humans have resettled on various planets. Agree with your discussion around how well the worldbuilding is done, especially when considering the ratio of art vs text. To me this felt like an established world, where we’re not privy to any full history or exposition, and it works well with the fact that the characters are young and come across as having lived in a fully established world rather than a changing one. Things are explained but not explained. Your continued (soft) irritation with Jules was so hilarious. And Ell was my favourite, as well. 🥰 Now themes of resistance! Of course, aplenty! 😂 Most of all, I love that in this work resistance is shown through care. In so many sci-fi works there’s a lack of presenting the possibilities of “travel” without undertones of colonisation or expansionism, of worlds/outposts being disposable due to the extreme nature of a lot of locations, etcetc. But here it is clear that, while problems exist, maintenance and restoration have true value, that this team is travelling around abandoned places and refusing to let them stay abandoned. I am fully here for so much more inherently queer sci-fi futurism! And the use of colour and placement throughout is so beautiful, I will have real trouble selecting which panels to share in the Discord because every tiny panel is a painting. Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

Thank you for being patient as I get to these comments from my travels! 😀 Ahhh, I’m glad we at least got some Febyuri onto the channel - it was much overdue! I was REALLY enthralled with this graphic novel! The art is incredibly gorgeous - having a computer to read this on was definitely to my advantage with the larger screen size! XD And I love how the free version is there to be accessible; we love a multimodal work! WHAT TIMING to come out right after the last episode of Stargaze – sometimes the universe aligns in the right way! And all those parts you mentioned really tied them together; you could feel the desperation in parts of this world - while the school seemed so carefree in its privileged setting. This series also reminded me a LOT in tone to Land of the Lustrous, which I loved as well. The world building made this feel like a world you already “knew,” and I appreciated that a lot, while giving fleshed out but mysterious (at times) characters to connect with, as well. The ambiguity of some parts worked very, very well. HAHAHA - Oh Jules, “soft irritation” is a good word for it! :D I loved Ell too! Mannnnn, the concept of how travel was done in this brought up so many points I hadn’t thought of – space immigration concerns! Who knew?! Not since the days of Cowboy Bebop have I thought of it that way – and the “disposability” of space locations! Connects with “Memories” from earlier on the channel surprisingly well, eh? I love that tied in with the “restoration” of certain parts and how that restoration is very cultivated and micro-managed in ways. And, of course, Queer Sci-Fi Futurism is a sub-genre that needs more entries to it! I was an art minor for a hot second, so I studied enough on color theory to just be in love with it, so this entry was scratching that itch with its symbolism, and effective use of color! Thank you so much for the comment and for the great commission - this was a fantastic read and reaction experience!
