*WEATHERED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I've seen Your Name and Suzume, but now it's time to watch the "middle child" of the self-proclaimed "Disaster Trilogy" and I'm so excited! Patron Jason N has chosen a fun ride of a film that has emotion, humor, and heart throughout -- a perfect film to round out this rainy spring month!

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was really fun to revisit as I’d only seen it once before back when it came out. I wonder if the story was partially written just to get a chance to absolutely show off with animating stunning weather, clouds and sunshine. 😆 This wouldn’t surprise me at all. All the clouds! Of course, when it comes to themes of resistance? We’ve got plenty! 😆 I absolutely agree that this film has really prominent environmental themes. So most of all, I Iove that it presents a very clear question: how much are children supposed to pay for a world adults before them broke? Do they have to literally sacrifice themselves to keep the status quo, or is it on all of us to get our shit together first. Watching this in 2026 was a trip. Also, I could absolutely see this storyline as a Natsume two-parter! 🥰 Thank you to Jason N for another amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

Great reaction. Figured it was a fitting spring time movie :) I feel like this one is a little underrated having to follow up Your Name which seems to have broke through the mainstream but I appreciate it more and more as time goes by. Some of the real life aspects are kinda interesting (albeit sad at parts). Hodaka first showed up in Kabukicho which is unfortunately where a lot of runaways end up congregating. We were in Japan last year and passing through the area saw quite a few hanging out. About the McDonalds, ate at a couple while there too and it's one of the few places where you can order a burger and it actually looks like you see on the advertisement, unlike the ones you get here in the US. The interior looked pretty spot on to the actual location we were at. Probably the most unrealistic part was how empty it was inside haha. Outside of McD's I was surprised at the amount of real life brands and real locations they used. Re-watching it now I recognized quite a few places which was cool. Usually get the fake versions of stuff but they really went all in. Glad you caught the Taki and Mitsuha cameos, those were fun. Your Name is probably still my favorite of the three but I think the characters here are best. The relationship between Hina and Hodaka is well done but the supporting cast really shine imo. Nagi, Suga, and Natsumi all feel really fleshed out and I like them so much..

I'm glad I've finally gotten the chance to see the whole trilogy! And yeah, if this movie was a vehicle just for incredible animation as we got, I wouldn't be surprised; I am fine if that's the case! So many themes of resistance, especially with the environment! And yes -- how much do kids have to pay for a world the previous generation broke. I think about that question a LOT, especially in our current timeline. It's....a lot sometimes, to think about! You know, I'd never thought about this as a Natsume storyline, but it totally could be!! I could see a yokai with the "sunshine" powers like this and Natsume in that same position as our protagonist! That's a great comparison! Thank you for the comment - Jason N really did come through with this one; I agree!

Thank you for the comment and kind words! It’s SUCH a great movie for spring! Honestly, I appreciate this one probably more than Your Name, as you said. I had no idea about Kabukicho and the runaways that are frequent there! Oh wow, that is interesting to know that about McDonald’s – I’ll have to keep that in mind if I go to Japan to stop and see it. That is really cool to see the locations in person and then see them in the movie for comparison – it is sad that universally, situations like those for runaways are not limited to a specific location in the world. I think you hit it on the head – I’m a character-driven person when watching or reading media, so I really loved the characters in this probably more – they are very fleshed out and all were done in a way you could relate to aspects of each’s character. Thank you for the commission; that was a great watch!
