Loved the reaction and discussion! We’re back! And what an episode to come back to from a break! 🥰 First of all, the discussion covered So Many elements of what’s presented in this episode, I really loved it because to me this is one of the densest episodes when it gets this kind of analysis! 🥰 I mean, in the discussion alone there was: salvation but not as heroism; empathy as strength and not weakness; poverty, food deserts and insecurity; “having nothing”; love as both identity and motivation; asking for help and showing vulnerability; forgiveness not as a prerequisite for receiving that help; different leadership styles; Sakura’s growth through observation and learning to process his own emotions. And all spoken about in depth! Thank you! 🫶 I was also really touched by how emotional the discussion was, and how much you related to Shuhei’s story and what you’ve seen with your students and in your communities over time. It is so disheartening to see this being such a universal issue e.g. in the UK there are the same issues of ever-increasing rates of child poverty, cuts made to school lunches and breakfast clubs (austerity related cuts are now (still too slowly) being reversed, but not before yet again affecting an entire generation of children), etc. And now with the cost-of-living crisis, I’ve also been seeing this really impact young adults at university, where it goes further and they end up having to choose between paid part time jobs and attending lectures they’re already paying a lot of money for. 😭 I really appreciated the note regarding younger students not feeling like they can ask for help, even with things that aren’t important or small things they may feel “embarrassed” about (unnecessarily, but still), like asking about some process or where to go to find a service, etc. I absolutely see this, and over the past nearly 15 years of working in higher education, I’ve also seen this get much worse for students. Over the years I really had to change how inductions were done and how strongly it was reiterated again and again that it was okay to ask questions! I can absolutely see how Shuhei and his group were unable to see past their experiences and fear to even conceive of a way out, let alone take action. 😭 And I also wanted to draw a Trigun parallel in this episode. To me, Tsubaki is very much a Vash-archetype: the salvation Tsubaki provides is not just passive kindness; his compassion is not weakness it is specifically a style of fighting/understanding (Shall we dance?); he gives Shuhei an exit; he looks at Shuhei and refuses to let “kidnapper” or “gang leader” be Shuhei’s conclusion, etc. Exactly the way Vash (most especially in Stargaze) refuses to reduce people, I think they both really try to show that survival does not beget cruelty. 🥹 Finally, back in a previous episode’s discussion, you’d noted that Sakura did not want to follow Kanji’s “advice” and noted how he processed this new way of being a leader and made a decision. I love how much of that we see “conclude” in this episode! Sakura’s “I hate what I hate!” is just beautiful, everything he experiences is a lesson but his inner motivation and sense of self is so strong. I love seeing this kind of example of growth. Amazing episode, amazing discussion! 🥰 Cannot wait for next week! 🌸

We are baaaack! I’m so excited! And yes, quite the episode to come back to! This episode just SCRATCHED that discussion ITCH. You are so welcome, too - there was so much to touch base on – I’m glad I got some time to re-energize myself before diving into this episode! Honestly, it’s really sad that there is solidarity in poverty struggles across the world – I really see it affecting students and realize how privileged I was growing up to at least have a stable roof over my head, food on the table. The struggle is indeed REAL. And OH YES, I lead an introduction lecture to high school students transitioning to college, and I try to say that they can ask ANY question and encourage them to! I love that this series went into discussion on that very topic! Oohh, come on, Trigun parallels! Yay! I also still need to get to your comment, but I keep getting it pushed back - hopefully this week! And yesss, I can see the tie to Vash with Tsubaki; maybe that’s why I love them so much, haha! 😀 But yeah, the attitude and way of assistance after “battle” is so Vash-like! I love that connection that you drew, here! <3 “Survival does not beget cruelty” - LOVE THAT PHRASING. I love Sakura taking ownership and agency on how he wants to “lead” and acknowledging parts of Kaji and Kanji’s advice he “wants” to follow and parts he wants to leave behind - we love to see that growth in him, and done so naturally! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I appreciate it and will be savoring these last two weeks’ worth of Wind Breaker!!
