*LUCKY HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I had so many questions from last episode and Hooooo Boy, do we get some answers this week! From going completely camp and ham to getting wild with Cyan being forced to don the role of the "Hero," this episode was entertaining to be sure, but I have A TON to talk about as we round out this arc!

25:25 I haven’t gotten to the “later” being referred to here but I’m guessing your confused by how she was moving later in the episode. This scene is being implied to take place after short time after Ken picked Cyan up off of the street, so Year 34, by the time she goes to the orphanage when all the Fear zombies are attacking, she’s had 2 Years of training

Nocover

28:48 Luo’s power isn’t a dropped plot line, his power is bad luck, the Guitar’s special effects were stated to be a built-in feature to add to the ambience.

Nocover

30:10 the Dean’s power isn’t what made people zombies, Fear did.

Well, this arc was, it’s a bit of a mess. Not my fav. But I don’t necessarily dislike it either. About the PVs, I don’t think they have anything *must know.* In my opinion, everything (important) gets revealed in the donghua sooner or later. But to be hero X is a multimedia project. I don’t wanna go into the details about that before you finish this season, but they were created as media to consume “alongside” TBHX anime. And they can definitely affect the viewpoint of the person watching this show. I think with Cyan, there would have been one detail that you would have liked to know. But even that is like, ehh. Not gonna drastically change your thoughts here. You had many questions/points of confusion, so I can offer my own answers/interpretations to some of your questions. Obviously, without any spoilers for what is to come, these are all highly speculative. And I do think that many of your complaints are valid. Especially the unclear timeline. But these are some thoughts that I got. Really quick timeline from 34-26 doesn’t automatically mean 24months. Like, we have NO idea about the months, far as we know, it could be 13months. Especially with something like “years since hero commission,” do they start when the year does, or is it some date in the, summer. When was the commission started? “How long has she been in the hero organisation?” and you talked how their wording about it seemed inconsistent. We don’t know how long she was “homeless” like, it could have been longer than we think, since it was done as a montage, it felt fast. But we were not given a good timeline on that. BUT I think that it was a pretty long time. And then if the start of the episode is at the start, ( I think she has done her first concert by now, but not a lot more ), then it is very likely that she was there only for a short time. Would make sense, if we were showing her “what sorta hero she will be” and explaining all that, saying she is gonna take on training and be “this sorta hero” etcetc. And when we can see her leaving to the orphanage, when you say “during those two years she never visited” I think this is precisely her visiting. During those two years, which may be WAY less than 2 years if she spent a good portion of it homeless. Like previously, she was homeless, and then she was probably very busy with the hero schedule, makes sense that she would not necessarily have time for it. ALSO! This can’t be *too long* after her leaving, because calamity still has all those same bandages *pressumedly* from he was hit by ME THE TINY TRUKKk. Especially, if were taking in how Dean just locked him up, no wonder if the (probably) broken bones ain’t healing quick. (and continuing more on this later) And then when we see the orphanage director freaking out with the “internet/fan gossip“ montages going on, we get a timeskip. Since I think it’s the time she spent in the hero agency and that montage is going through the public’s view on her during that time and how it developed. After which we get to the agency complaining about “yet an another” spike in her loss of trust value and then everything goes single-lined on the same timeline. At least, I do think that these “internet gossip” monologues ARE a timeskip. Just badly executed. Because they flash in between Liu and then later Dean, going through emotions. I think it’s “meant” to convey them slowly getting corrupted by fear, while the montage is what’s going on with Cyan during a longer period of time. .. Cool idea, just badly executed. And I think that because of this bad execution, it didn’t register as the time skip that it should have, probably? And I feel like, at least some of the questions that you have get answered IF we assume that it is a time skip montage. Not a long one necessarily, but like a month or few? “Why make her a hero?” that is a good question, but I think it just boils down to this being a hero show. xD. And maybe there’s some actual thoughts too. Such as maybe they believed that she wouldn’t stand out in the Idol business on her own. Like, if she’s just “uplifting people with her music,” then people’s trust in her luck would fade/weaken away and thus her powers become less interesting. Since what idol doesn’t uplift their listeners with their music? Back to her visiting the orphanage. If she was told by someone that Liu was dead. Which, the DOS seemed reluctant to let her go there. We got mr. reporter. What's to say, the reporter asked him about “why did she run away??” and the Dean said “blah blah, and then this kid Liu died and blah” and the reporter told that to his buddy at DOS and then they told that to Cyan. And she decided to to believe it. ORrr,,, if we wanna lean more into these morally grey vibes of DOS. Then hell yeah they would tell her that her buddy from the orphanage died. Like they clearly want to move her image away from the orphanage and to do that “easier,” they’re also destroying her ties and emotional bonds with that place. And if she kept asking to go back to the orphanage to see if her friend is OK then just “no need, he’s dead” or smt. I mean, she saw Liu get hit by (me) that trukk, Im more surprised why she believes that he didn’t die?! Aaand, since I talked about that previously mentioned montage is a time skip. Her knowing what her powers do isn’t that weird? Like they said, they would make her do training. Like she said that “she has no battle experience” BEFORE the timeskip montage. That’s how she became a “gymnast”, got angel wings, and all that. And even more important part. She’s lucky. It’s in her name. I think that almost anything she does turns out, at the very least, “not bad” just because she’s lucky. It’s the ultimate plot armour. “Why would Luo not bust open that door to meet Cyan” He’s traumatised, manipulated and brainwashed by that Dean. He’s a teenager, he’s easily controlled. And especially with the place being so full of fear, etc. it’s probably messing up with his brain as well. And you brought up, that maybe his injuries are from abuse (and not the TRUKK) then,, more the reason why this guy might have this kid under his thumb. Like, physical abuse mixed with emotional abuse is not something you can just shake off. It makes you blind to the truth. And taken this situation that he is in, I don’t think it’s fair to blame him.. For getting manipulated. The internet/public is blaming Cyan for the unluckiness of the orphanage instead of the Dean, for spreading negative energy. Does make sense, because as we learn from the end of the episode. “Fear” wasn’t really a known thing. How would the -highly interested in drama and gossip- internet have thought to blame dean for the unluckiness and not the currently hot topic Cyan. And like, it’s the internet, the drama does 180’s in a second. So it going from “blaming Cyan” to “blaming the orphanage”, accurate internet/mob mentality behaviour. The reason I don’t think that Cyan’s luck is affected is that while she has lot of people mistrusting her, she clearly still has a LOT of people trusting her as well. Otherwise, they could have probably dropped her off and had her no longer be a hero. Like they said, her “luck has gone down” not that it has disappeared. Like see that she still had about 300 000 trust value. Even if from a hero standpoint she is weakened, I don’t think that she has lost her powers and such. I do agree with the Cyan and Liu reunion being pretty messy and, like, not that well done. Like why didn’t she look for Luo? Did she end up believing that he was truly dead and thus didn’t look for him? BUt then she saw him and like, ignored him. So it was pretty meh. I agree. “She suddenly knows how to put this device in there” öhm, it just looks like a stylised USB. And at least watching this, I always assumed it was such and never thought otherwise. Before you brought it up. I don’t think it’s that big of a “leap in logic” that she would know how an USB works? I don’t think he broke the computer, just the screen. Since this didn’t seem to be a laptop, but a bigger PC buld instead, it can very much work despite that. Like how they work, the actual PC wasn’t hit, far as we saw at least, only the screen was so it would work normally, you just can’t see the image/video because you don’t have the screen to see what you computer is doing. Which well, when we saw the water draining down, we could heard the audio working, but saw that the screen still wasn’t working. So I think it’s a very likely situation. Just that, I don’t know what the water did? Cuz I, personally don’t think the water was even needed. So like. That is a good question. Tbh, I don’t think it’s weird for the parents to be in the plane without their kid? Like, maybe they left the kid with their family friend of relative to go on a business trip. Or just personal time away, vacation or smt. Like I can think of many reasons not to take your kid with you on a trip. Especially when they’re that small. Tho I do think that both of the parents going, and leaving the kid alone is pretty iffy. But maybe they really trust the person whom they left Liu with. Who knows. Personally, I liked the plane scene. But then again, im someone who enjoys a lot of bullshit melodrama. So like, what can I do. Ughh this became a long one, probably my longest comment like. Ever. öhn. At the start of this, i was like “I probably have nothing to say“ guess I was wrong. I do totally agree with you on this being the weakest arc, and not that good, and inconsistent, especially on the timeline. Also I just never cared for Cyan, personally. So that also affects my view of this arc. But you made several interesting points and questions that got my brain thinking, and if I'm thinking, I might as well write down. LMAO. Also, apologies for my bad grammar, but im lowk tired now. spent (almost) 3 hours listening to your discussion and writing these down, so like I kinda lack the energy to go over my absolutely horrendous errors. XDD Let's hope you enjoy the next arc more. :D!

41:09 Dean says her power brings her luck but bad luck for everyone else, the implication to Luo being, she was the only survivor so her good luck caused everyone else including his parents to die

Nocover

44:00 you can also see that Fear is creeping up in this scene, Fear has the tendency to make people think irrationally, as we see with all of the orphanage people blaming Cyan for things she has no right to be blamed for

Nocover

1:06:26 the wings are a part of her whole “battle angel” persona. We don’t really know how they work yet but her parting the cars is her luck ability, shes being shown to have the power to direct her Luck into her stuff like the guitar, spray, bow and yo-yo, where as before it was just a passive thing

Nocover

1:11:08 it was set up in the beginning scene, it’s been 2 years since that moment seeing as how she was just then meeting everyone and getting briefed on what kinda hero she’ll be

Nocover

1:33:06 not exactly, Fear isn’t Dean’s power, it’s just District 70 is the first area to be enveloped in Fear, causing the public to become aware of it

This arc is one of those that when you have the bigger picture it's alot more easier to appreciate. I have rewatched this arc several times and it's given me time to think about it because yeah alot of people have agreed that this arc is very rushed and to be honest I dont think it needed more episodes I just think it needed to be structured a bit better. However, I think the main punchline of the emotional scene on the plane still hit for me and for alot of people which Im glad it did. Another important takeaway that I think fell flat for some is that it wasnt Cyan the Dean's or Luo's power that was the main culprit here but the power of Fear and as Mickey said in this episode it has always lurked but this incident at District 70 is what has made it be publicly known as the forces of Fear that for heroes or villains can amplify the scope of their powers.

sanime

Only some of the PVs contain extra context to be honest but for most part everything in the pvs are shown or implied in the show itself. It is really hard as you have said to picture the timeline of the show when its just this year to this year so we can only really assume that before her tour she has been part of DOS for a few months to a year because to get your own tour would take few months of marketing and also as you rightly said setting all that up as well would also take time. This might be a hot take but I actually think Cyan's new look and powers are adorable. I think it's supposed to give off more a cupid feel but instead of love it's firing off luck which is cool but also because luck is really a vague concept compared to super strength or electrical powers like E soul or Lin Ling it would be the hardest power to explain as to how it works which is part of what sent District 70 into a frenzy which I'll talk about later. Did she need to train her archery skills or does she fire and where she wants to direct her luck is where it hits? It's unclear but I still think it's cool. In terms of "dropped plotlines", the guitar is still there it's just taken on a new form as it has been modified into her superpower guitar and is now a symbol of her being both a hero and a singer. It could be looked at negatively as Cyan giving up her humble beginnings to be a puppet for the hero organization or using what she has to be what Luo didnt get to be and fulfilling both their dreams. The rays emitted from the guitar were never a symbol of Cyan's luck or Luo's luck it was part of the aesthetic of the guitar as Luo points out. There could be more to it than that but so far nothing has really pointed to those rays being special. I think that all the arcs so far has done a pretty good job driving home the underlying and main tragedy for these characters that none of these heroes as long as they are tied to an agency will be free from being micro managed and for someone like Yang Cheng for example Uncle Rock and his actions have highlighted that it is hard for any hero to reach anywhere without a manager or some sort of team behind them. A chauffeur that could have been mean and added more restrictions and isolation to Cyan's life or a super nice chauffeur that actually bent the rules for her Im taking the super nice chauffeur any day. I mean as long as no one found out he took Cyan there he'll be fine I didnt see that as a point worth nitpicking. While the main powers in this episode are Cyan's luck and Fear, Fear amplifies heroes/villains powers so it amplifies the Dean's tentacle powers and it amplifies Luo's powers of bad luck as him attacking Cyan breaks the computer screen that she was going to use to play the plane recording. I do agree that Luo's powers are pretty underutilized because the only other time we see his bad luck is getting the truck to drive straight towards him and the Dean. The really wholesome way his bad luck is utilized which gets called back to this episode is the ball hitting the trigger for the spray of water. We do get an explanation in the episode of what the spray can does when she finishes spraying it like a barrier she says that none of the Deans powers will affect her or this will amplify her powers within the barrier I dont remember exactly what she said but basically that's why the Deans powers no longer affected her. I genuinely dont think Cyan needed to be called out for not visiting the orphanage She clearly cares about the orphanage and was told not to have any connections to her past which is why there are multiple points in this episode that emphasizes the idea of Luo's existence being a burden for Cyan's new identity and on top of that her priority is becoming a hero so she can stand on her own two feet however despite being told to leave her past behind the first opportunity she gets she goes to the orphanage. Here's the thing I dont think Luo was being weird here either he's been told an argument that logically could be true that Cyan's fortune leads to the misfortune of others and on top of that even if he didnt believe it what can he do exactly defy the Dean with a broken arm and other injuries there was nothing he could have done in that situation. Now I do agree that Cyan doesnt really do much to reconnect with Luo again she was told he was dead but didnt have any way to confirm that he wasnt unless she somehow checked the orphanage I think her visit to the orphanage was to maybe try and sneak in but the dean saw her immediately and while I wish as you said there was more focus on their bond during the fight and throughout the last two episodes maybe because she realized that he was not being himself she wanted to try and let him listen to the recording so that's where her priorities were when she finally reunited with him. The ball as I mentioned earlier is one thing from their bond that Im glad makes an appearance and I dont blame Luo for lashing out at her not visiting more despite me thinking that was also beyond her control. I think one thing that was highlighted throughout this is that it is easy for a narrative to be spun if the truth is unknown Anyone can create the truth in their heads if there is no basis for what is the truth so the news the media the Dean and Luo all believed that her luck powers took misfortune from them or others and under the influence of Fear ran with that irrational conclusion and it makes alot of sense given how fear in general works we saw Enlighter who had the truth right in front of him and couldnt see it because he was under the influence of Fear Now I will agree that there are some minor plot holes or side eye stuff with this episode execution of this but it still works. I mean why would Liu ask about Luo he is only associated with DOS through his daughter and his friendship with Mickey and he may have not even interacted with Cyan at all since he dropped her off so there is a high possibility that he knows nothing about Luo. I talked about it above but Mickey's conviction about truth being subjective explains alot of his actions. Mickey is not going to be interested if there is no solid physical evidence to say that yes this is the truth the fear and panic came about because people became confused about what Cyan's powers do and how they affect people so Queen walks in and says oh there is physical evidence he will be all about that. Im pretty sure that the entirety of District 70 is under the effect of Fear and that's why the people including the drivers and of course the orphanage all become zombies. Fear doesnt need someone's specific power to activate it but it will activate the powers of others. Overall the last two episodes were rough but I think they nailed the landing with the plane reveal and the world building of the introduction of Fear. If Lin Ling can be a cheesy hero towards Moon then why cant Cyan have a cheesy backstory #equality Im joking but I do love her backstory and I love Cyan and Luo and hey Cyan's luck bended the show to her will to give her a happy conclusion so good for her.

AshWin

I mean to me personally this arc never felt rushed or anything like that because to me Cyans story is really a beautiful story about finding one’s identity, and coming back to her one true friend

romaniablack

Hey, that's totally okay! We can all have different opinions of literature - that's what makes reading and talking about them fun! I'm glad that you got that from this arc; thanks for sharing your perspective and for the comment!

romaniablack

Yeah, I can get that; it just doesn't match up for me personally with the timeline and could have been handled differently in my opinion.

romaniablack

Yeah, it's just a bit over the top for me in terms of world-building.

romaniablack

Please let me figure out things as we go through the show; I got that implication from Episode 11, but didn't this episode. I don't want things explained until the very end of the series, so that I can have time to figure it out since it's my first viewing. Thank you!

romaniablack

Yeah, I got this - it's just a little clunky in its execution in the story.

romaniablack

Again, please see discussion for Episode 11.

romaniablack

Definitely could have been expanded upon and handled better in my opinion, but I went into detail on that in the discussion. :)

romaniablack

It definitely was not written in a way where that was easy to understand, at least to me -- it's totally fine to disagree with my takes, but they're just my opinions as a first-time viewer. All I ask is that people wait and let me try to work through the timeline on my own - but thank you for your comments!

Nocover

That’s fair, this ep is pretty weirdly paced, Cyan i think could’ve benefitted from 4 episodes

romaniablack

Yeah, I said that in the discussion - that maybe I would have a better idea of it later -- but as a takeaway on a FIRST VIEWING - again, first-time reactor and discusser - there are a lot that falls flat for me as a viewer and a lot that could have done with...well, I spent an hour and a half discussing it, hahaha! But thank you for the comment!

Nocover

Understood 🙌

romaniablack

That would have been AMAZING! I really love Cyan's character and if they could have expanded this arc even one episode, I think it would have helped a lot! I'm sure as I go, I'll have more I can tie back to this arc, so hopefully that will be the case! Thanks for the reply! :D

romaniablack

Thank you!! I had told the mods I'd watched episode 11 (that's the furthest I've gotten) so they said it was okay - I want to definitely read everyone's comments, so just wanted to share! Thanks so much!

romaniablack

Thanks for taking the time to craft this comment! That’s good to know about the PV’s; still waiting until the end to watch them, though, to be safe for my viewing experience. Next episode, Whiteboard-kun and I will break down the timeline, if that helps. Or my thoughts on it so far! I think the looks and powers are adorable! I just questioned how IMMEDIATE it all went down. Yeah, if I don’t understand something the story - just let me be a first-time viewer and I’ll figure it out as I go! I think it’s REALLY plot contrived that it’s just “she’s lucky! And suddenly a world class archer!” Ehhhhh, that is a bit lazy writing to me, personally, but that’s just my opinion. If that’s the case, she should be stopping ALL the crime around the world with that sort of luck. Yeah, but it’s NOT the same guitar, because she got the modified guitar and then had the old guitar on stage at the concert afterwards, right? Either way, even if it’s the same guitar, I talked about why that took away from the symbolism of it. *shrugs* That is…eh…on the rays – again, folks just gotta let me cook as a reactor and see what I get out of it. That’s definitely true about the themes of the show - it’s a little on the nose for me, again - my own opinions - in this arc, but it’s at least easy to understand. Nah, the chauffeur was pure plot convenience hahaha But I like your attempts to explain it! XD I’m just poking fun at it, but I’m also an English teacher and that’s my job to break down narration – but we don’t have to take it too seriously (that honestly goes for this whole episode, as I said in the discussion). Please no discussion of fear - the mods approved it because I’ve seen episode 11 and had a breakdown of it in the discussion, but I’ve asked everyone watching to not explain concepts to me and let me experience the show and discuss it to you authentically and I will develop my thoughts as we go - that’s why you’re watching me, right? To hear my thoughts and see what I figure out as I dive into the show? The plane scene was emotional and I liked parts of it! Honestly, I don’t view Lin Ling as cheesy and thought his arc was really well-executed and had a tight narrative with enough time to get the details out as they should – I’m not dogging Cyan, I really like her character – there’s just more noticeable plot holes in this arc, and I’m not a reactor that just blindly nods their head and doesn’t talk about it. Again, totally just my opinion, but hopefully, you all enjoy as I watch the rest of the series and see where we go from here! I spent a lot of time discussing my opinions and reasons on them - y’all don’t have to agree with me; it’s cool we have multiple interpretations and views on a series! Thanks for the comments!

romaniablack

I didn’t dislike the arc - a “bit of a mess” is a good term for it! That is a great point to make that it’s going to be revealed sooner or later but yeah, of course a donghua would have side materials! But that is good to know, so thank you for letting me know about that! Thank you for helping to clear things up – I appreciate that – and while avoiding spoilers! Yay! If it helps, Episode 11, I did a complete re-work of the timeline, so some of the things you noted may have hit me in that episode! 😀 One aspect I wish had been clearer was the timeline for Cyan and her busking vs. time with the hero agency. But thank you for helping to explain that part! YOU, THE TINY TRUKK - So it was you! XD That’s perfection. I maintain that it would have been interesting to see her as an idol vs. a hero - hey, not every idol has “magic luck” that was given to them in a plane by people about to die…so…there’s THAT separating her from others! Just like, “what makes her different than any other hero?” Sort of thing. But anyway – I do like the morally gray vibes of Liu and the DOS in this. I do think that they could have done something interesting with Luo – a lot of his arc is - to me - really cliche and overdone tropes on manipulated characters…but maybe I’ve just watched way too many shows with characters going through the same trauma that their actions become repetitive and predictable. XD Ehhh, I think the “She’s lucky, that’s why” as MASSIVE plot armor is one of my biggest critiques of this writing-wise…it just comes across as lazy when every convenience in her favor is because “she’s lucky” and not much else. Definitely a “meh” moment for me. Good points about the gossip and her luck, though! I mean, it is a USB in what it looks like, but why this massive device, then? It looks pretty archaic - why not just a computer? It’s just little details like that, they probably could have tweaked in the writer’s room for me - but then, I’m holding this show to a HIGH standard, so that’s why I nitpick. That would make sense on the screen, but if you look the WHOLE device looks toast. There is a massive crevice in the entire device, haha!! And yeah, the water making it “come to life” was an odd choice. The plane scene is nice and emotional – like you said, it’s a lot of melodrama, maybe too much for me, but that’s just a taste-thing – nothing egregiously bad. At least they did explain where her luck came from and AT LEAST (so far) her and Luo can have a “happy ending!” YAY!! I love long comments like this (that I can read - yay), so thank you for taking the time to craft it! I do like Cyan, but I’m excited to see the other arcs in this!! And it’s going to be fun to see how this arc works in relationship to the rest of the show - your grammar is totally fine and THANK YOU for taking the time to listen to my discussion! I appreciate that! But yes, onwards to the next arc! Thank you so much for the comment!
