For clarification, her name is Luo Li, translated as Loli

Popy

I think for the nepotism allegations for both Lou Li and Queen the answer is "It's complicated". There's truth that both got their first step at least in part because they knew important people . But at the same time both deserve it and work very hard so they aren't coasting. I like that the show lets you think about it and doesn't offer a clean unrealistic version. Much like real life many things can be true at the same time. What I do think is that Lou Li and especially Queen don't want things to be handed to them. They want to work for it.

tinyTRUKK

One thing that’s a translation issue that I'll be getting out of the way first. “Lily” is a parental nickname, but her real name is Luo Li. It just sounds so similar to her hero name “Loli” that crunchy subs keep calling her Loli even when they shouldn’t. Luo Li’s mirror kinda cracks me up, cuz I saw someone advertise one VERY MUCH like it just yesterday. And it stayed on my mind because of how useless and expensive it was. (as in it was 800 dollars and you still needed a 10$ monthly subscription to use its “smart” parts, like wtf?) Idk why I always thought that DJ Shindig’s name was Shining and not Shindig. Like,, damn, it’s been a year and only just now found that out. LMAOO XDD Hmm,,, about the cuteness aspect. I think where it goes is the fact that “cute” described in the dictionary is “attractive or pretty especially in a childish, youthful, or delicate way.” It’s in no way meant as an insult, by anyone (unless it’s said sarcastically), but it still has an undertone of someone being “delicate” or “Not as capable.” This kinda reminds me of a conversation I remember hearing about a few years ago in my country, where women would talk about how they were referred to in the workplace. There's a language barrier that kills the nuance, so I won't bother to explain it as much, but there's some terminology that is good-natured and means only good, but in the context of the *workplace*, it carries a very dismissive undertone that made the women feel smaller, as if they were not taken seriously. So I see this cuteness conversation here as something very similar. I get really uncomfortable whenever I see the gym scene, and we can see her muscles wither away as the guys think she’s cute and delicate. Like, lowkey so body horror I can’t with it. In a world where other people’s view of you changes how you *are* the connotation of “I can look and act cute, but still be tough” doesn’t really exist as much *as it should*. Queen isn’t really cute, as the kid version maybe, but even then, she had a more elegant and mature feel to her. It’s the sort of “no nonsense, matter-of-fact, stern” attitude that she has that doesn't make her “cute.” She’s beautiful and gorgeous, but not in a “childish, youthful, or delicate way.” Cyan, I think, is kind of different in the way she (or her management team) approaches her “heroism.” Cyan’s fighting style is in no way contrasting her cuteness; her style is very “stereotypical” for a “cute female hero.” She shoots a bow, focuses on agility with her rollerskates, etc. While Luo Li’s fight style is more traditionally “masculine,” aka, she’s trying to build muscle, she is very much hands-on in combat, even in the robot suit, and so on. Similar to Bowa, except that Bowa came with the more “masculine” looks and behaviour. The discussion in “my dad never has time for me” and “my dad is dead” is a really interesting thing, ‘cuz one is clearly worse, but both are bad. Like Nuonuo misses her deceased father and is jealous of Luo Li having a dad, even if he isn’t in her life. But Luo Li is equally allowed to feel bad at not having her dad spend time with her. And even if he’s not just a workaholic but actually can’t take a lot of vacation days, it still doesn’t erase the fact that he should be there for his daughter. Especially as he does seem to care for her. But regardless of anything else, Luo Li x Nuonuo supremacy!!!!! Lesbians rule the world!!!

Ale

I find it cute that both Nuonuo and Wreck had a pride flag somewhat integrated in their surrounding. Wreck has the rainbow magnets, while Nuonuo has her pins look like the pansexual flag in her more casual outfit. A little bit of queer rep sprinkled in.

Po-Tater

It means the same thing

Nocover

Sure but “Loli” still has weird connotations, and Romania seemingly doesn’t like calling her that so I’m clarifying that her name is supposed to be Luo Li

Po-Tater

I hear you. A lot of people prefer saying Luo Li, myself included. I was just pointing out that if it’s the connotation she doesn’t like, then Lily is probably a better alternative since both “loli” and “luo li” have the same connotation.

day

Others have already mentioned this, but I want to chime in, too. Since you expressed discomfort with the name Loli, I want to clarify that her name is actually spelled Luo Li, and that's also where the parental nickname Lili comes from. Think Cheng Xiaoshi calling Lu Guang "Guangguang" to tease him. So, as far as I'm concerned, the show isn't referencing the Spanish name "Lolita" nor the Japanese term "lolicon;" rather, her given name "Li" (莉) can be a Chinese word for "jasmine," and the common family name "Luo" (罗) can mean "to collect," which I think makes a beautiful name. I hate the idea of recoiling from a name in one language just because it sounds like something else in another language. That being said, "Luo Li" does still have the same negative connotation... I just choose to believe in a different meaning based on the Chinese characters. It grosses me out when people make "loli" jokes about her. I agree; I don't vibe with that at all.

Nocover

Yk what, fair enough. I just looked it up and I actually didn’t know “Luo Li” LITERALLY means the same thing as Loli, I interpreted your original reply wrong lol. My bad

day

I'm glad you brought up how "cute" refers to a "childish, youthful, or delicate" look. As a grown woman, I'd be a little offended if someone tried to compliment me by calling me cute, haha! It would feel pretty demeaning and, yes, exactly, dismissive. Even for a 16-year-old, I imagine. Queen is definitely the opposite and projected maturity from a very young age. Let's go lesbians!!!

I'd say that Luo created a music environment for Cyan for 6 years during her time in the orphanage for her to train her music skills, but it's time-skipped, while Micky did tell Cyan to do combat training without showing the date, and this arc didn't provide training montages in general when they were needed. The Cyan arc goes from starting off in two relatively slower-paced episodes to finishing off in one really fast episode, which should have been expanded given the slow-start premise, and this arc ended up glossing over some build-up to Cyan's characterization and her skillset in favor of presenting the main story within the arc format limit. The Glimmer Lab is first mentioned in EP8 directly, and the Glimmer Lab is mentioned during the conversion between Liu Zhen and the protester about accepting the Fear. The lab name is one of the translation errors that can't be explained until this episode without spoiling, as the subtitle has mistaken the Glimmer Lab as the Aether Lab. The Glimmer Lab is also indirectly shown during the E-Soul arc and Queen arc, and it's only shown in an untranslated resume that suggests Shang Chao has done multiple internships, including at the Glimmer Lab during the E-Soul arc, and it's shown to explain the origin of a hostile that Queen pursues during the Queen arc. The title card "Tough Girl" in literal Chinese means "Female" and "Tough Guy", and the word itself is used in China to either describe women who are independent and strong, not bothered by trifles and bold and generous in personality, or to describe women who are only recognized for their (physical) power that derived from what would be considered as masculine behaviors, as masculine traits are considered the standard of excellence by others, and labeling women as "Tough Girl" might imply that women must possess masculine traits to gain recognitions, while neglecting the inherent characteristics of women themselves, which leads to a type of implicit discrimination against traditional female roles. I suppose that choosing this specific word and the two different colors for the title card might indicate the duality of Lou Li's decision. The two colors might represent Lou Li's pink armor suit and the blue hologram screen on her helmet too. The scene of Da Xiong getting bullied by Tiger is a reference to a Japanese TV series, Doraemon, where the main character Nobita is constantly getting bullied by Gian, and their localized names in China are Da Xiong and Pang Hu (Fat Tiger). I feel like this scene has provided the basis for the Lou Li arc for setting up the naive tone and the tech elements, as the referenced TV series also features a robot called Doraemon who has many futuristic gadgets to help Nobita to get through episodic problems, even though Lou Li did her own engineering to get access to all those gadgets. Regarding Luo Li's appearance, I guess that Professor Luo's hair turned white because of age and heavy lab work, and pink is a color that is closer to white on the palette, so his hair might turn white even quicker. There is also a difference between her first appearance in EP11 and her appearance in EP13 as the art style changes, which might not properly convey how "cute" she is.

Thank you for the comment and clarification!

That is fair – I definitely agree that we can’t just say, “Nepotism! They didn’t earn their position!” Because the show does a good job of showing how they got to where they were through their work, but factors were definitely there in their favor – I think Loli had more connection to Nepotism through her dad’s equipment being there and that being REQUIRED for her power, whereas Queen’s powers don’t require such things, but the point still stands - thanks for bringing that up and for the comment!

romaniablack

Thank you for pointing that out about Lily vs. Loli vs. Luo Li! Yeahhh, that tech with the mirror looks cool but practicality? For that price? Nah. XD DJ SHINDIGGGG hahaha! I just love him for his ridiculousness in name alone. Oh yeah, I totally get the part about “cute” which is why I get a little aggravated on Lily’s behalf – “Cute” can definitely be taken in a bad context so I feel for her. I have definitely experienced sexism in the workplace multiple times, so the characters in here treating Loli as they do because of her looks irks me and definitely got me empathizing for her. I didn’t notice the muscles altering – that really IS body horror and freaks me out, too! Although…it kind of irks me that there’s not more “consistency” with how the trust value works, but that’s a conversation for Episode 15’s intro. And yes, Queen has this “elegance” to her for sure! I feel Cyan is very stereotypical in her fighting style, though, like you said! Whereas Luo Li’s fighting is more masculine in concept, like Bowa’s. And yes, that conversation about the dads was interesting between the two of them – I’m DEFINITELY shipping Luo Li and NuoNuo hardcore!! Go Lesbians! Forget those dudes! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

Ohhhhh, I didn't realize the pansexual pins but that's really cute and I love the queer representation being shown! Nice! Thank you for the comment and pointing that out!

romaniablack

Thank you for sharing the correction and clarification on Loli’s name! That really helps! But yes, loli jokes with her character? Not cool - not vibing with that at all, either! Thank you so much for the comment helping to understand that! I appreciate that so much!

romaniablack

Oh yeah, there is NO content showing us that – so why should it be the audience’s job to “guess” this happens? There was zero context of that at all. So I can’t assume it happened. I do agree it should have been expanded to SHOW the audience more – they don’t even TELL us what you’re suggesting, so definitely poor writing (in my opinion) – as an English teacher and someone with a Master’s degree in rhetoric and composition – one of the first writing rules they teach you is that if you want your audience to know something you HAVE to create context - the way and subtlety of that can vary, but it HAS to be there. Never leave anything for your audience to assume if you don’t want criticism for it. But I’m not going to argue it anymore; folks will just have to accept this is how I view the arc until the show proves me otherwise and I talk about it in the discussion. 😀 Thank you for pointing out the reference for the Glimmer Lab! That helps out a lot! That’s also interesting about the translation in the episode for the title - thanks for explaining that! The color theory – I can see that as well! Ahhh, I have not seen Doraemon, so it’s interesting to see this Donghua reference it! Nice! I was going to say (and I think I might have in the discussion) that Professor Luo’s hair could have been pink – but facial feature-wise, she doesn’t really look like either of them. Not that that’s a big thing - I don’t look like either of my parents, so I get it. Thank you for the comment! :D

Just finished EP14 reaction. Quick correction about my alternative title card color theory, I've mistaken the blue hologram of the Trust Value to the orange hologram screen in her prototype armor, and she has the pink hologram screen in her current armor. Got a bit confused while writing long comments, but the title card colors could still apply to my theory about feminine vs masculine aspect in displaying power.

romaniablack

Oh yeah, thank you for noting that on the color theory -- still a really cool representation throughout here! Thanks for the reply!!
