*CO-HABITATING HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Just when you think it's going to be a chill post-Dragon-fighting episode, Oh no no no -- now we have a NEW character who just happens to be living with Qifrey, just happens to be the perfect foil to Qifrey, just HAPPENS to have elements about him that seem connected to our mysterious antagonist but yet not -- I have so much theorizing to do that I wasn't expected to on this day!

I have been waiting for this episode for a while! 😆 Husband comes home to find Wifey adopted another daughter… Someone has already mentioned this, but there is a spin off series of cook books with Qifrey and Olruggio. That yam doesn’t exist as far as I know, but there are plenty of freaky fruits out there that I would love to get my hands on! One thing about this series, not many anime characters are depicted with facial hair, I think they did a good job with it. I think Olruggio’s design is very good, the total opposite to Qifrey’s design. I do love a good ruffled shirt! As for the Op, I think it’s safe to view, but you have great moderators that will advise you on that. Yeah, old Olruggio showing up and no one mentioning him is … convenient. While reading the manga, it doesn’t seem so abrupt? Or at least it didn’t bother me. Coco had issues adjusting so maybe that’s why it was never mentioned before. Or maybe I just didn’t notice it because my dad traveled a lot when I was young and it was just normal. Then he quit and became a science teacher. 🤷‍♀️ Your crack ships and Olruggio’s appearance is all I wanted this week and it was worth the wait! Can’t wait for the next episode! Yes, we had 4 winged birds…. Remember, birds are dinosaurs! https://youtu.be/SmcqnAWKLJQ?si=Z58spKlIUgbRqC0_ Edit: found the best Microraptor video! Man, I’m really hyper focused on this 4 winged bird! https://youtu.be/tvMrACaQjlw?si=tTC5nCYP2Sj0ciI8

Ok the only thing I want to say today is that I think Olruggio should left Qifrey's pathetic wet gay bitchass and move in with ME instead okay okay thats not the only thing. There is actually one topic I would like to talk about and it is that... at least now in the story, Qifrey seems like a really good teacher, but doesn't seem to be that good of a... ya know, parental figure? or whatever calls it. When he SHOULD be, considering that the girls who are young teens live specificaly with him instead of their parents. He is wonderful when it comes to teaching them witch stuff and anything that is related to it. But anything else... he is just BAD at it och my GOD. And I currently works at kindergarten, I know these are younger kids than four girls in WHA, but sometimes I really want to scream at Qifrey, hold his arms and shake him and give him some books about raising kids. When it comes to some topics he is clearly treating them like kids that need to be teached things but with different topics he behaves like they're small adults 100% capable of dealings with things above their age and mental growth. Like "yeah theyre going to be fine". Like when he took Coco gome it was like taking a stray cat or something, he literally just put her in the house and be like "yeah you are here now". He didn't tell her ahead that there are whole bitchass THREE DIFFERENT GIRLS outside her, didn't tell her their names or how she should behave. She get to know Tetia and Riche exist when she saw them, and its the same with them, When Qifrey easly could took the girls on a side before to tell them who Coco is so they do not clash about her not knowing things and being an Outsider, avoiding the possibility of her being hated. She did not tell her ANYTHING about Aggott who is her literal roommate, just "yeah there is someone named Aggott good luck" when Aggott has a difficult personality and just telling Coco like two things about her would make things easier. He didn't have a talk with Aggott beforehand, when Coco should be her roommate... he should warn Aggott about it first. He did not tell Coco that there is a WHOLE OTHER ADULT MAN LIVING WITH THEM until Coco saw Olruggio on her own in this episode, and I think this is like??? Really important thing??? Like of course Olruggio was going to be back from work, he is a Watchful Eye here *crying emoji* what was Qifrey even thinking that is straight up insane behavior out there. He straight up let Coco in his house, didn't warn her about ANYTHING and there goes like "yeah I have to go somewhere Aggott (other twelve yo) will take care of you until then everything will be okay ok byeeee" and goes to the Great Hall not caring if things are ACTUALLY going to be okay. Him holding the topic of Coco going to the test without his knwoledge was underwhelming, like girl could die here? He lets girls out of sight in Kalhn constantly, like they were in the SHOP with you, how the hell you let them dissapear without noticing? THREE of them, even. It wasn't like ONE girl, he didn't notice losing THREE. He lets Aggott isolate all the time, let her go on her own in the city without the word, and just like you say, didn't react in any way to her not wanting to spend time with them, eat together etc. I love Qifrey do not get me wrong, but dude seems like he has 0% actual indea how to care about literal CHILDREN that are under his care. He is fucking responsible for them, och my god, when I read WHA for the first time it was like 2 volumes in and I was like DUDE WHAT ARE YOU DOING *more crying emoji* No wonder the girls are fighting, no wonder that Eye Mask Brimhat had such a easy job taking Coco into Dragon's Labirynth, no wonder Olruggio scared Coco and nearly took her to the Knight Moralis. No one knew about anything, not only Coco didn't know about Olruggio existing, Qifrey also didn't decide to inform his fucking Watchful Eye that LIVES with him that he adopted a new daughter... I mean took a new apprentice (who is an Outsider). How you could be such a MESS and be a caretaker of four young teen girls I have no idea. Actually thanks god there is a second adult here LMAO I wish you could check Olruggio's VA. But I get why you didn't. Though one person can play more than one character in an anime and also one character can have more than one VA, I think its not that black and white. And no matter what the outcome is (If Olruggio is Eye Mask or not) I think this anime is planned to good to easly spoil things. I talked about Aggott (and girls in general) under the last episode, but I think it's worth noticing that Aggott didn't accuse Coco of being too loud and disturb her work. She just left and come outside where she has more space. I think it says a lot about her personality. Olruggio is third character in my top3 with Riche and Tartah. But I think I will talk about him more in the future, this is just a one episode with him now. But I definitely ship him with Qifrey. Theyre literally living together with fourr daughters in the middle of nowhere in a cute cottage bruh how you could not ship them. I like how you commented on their black and white coloristic being reversed. I think theyre designed the same like Noe and Vanitas from The Case Study of Vanitas, where where Noe had white, Vanitas had black and vice versa in their designs, including even hair and skin color and nearly all elements of their outfits. Here is the same, like Olruggio has a black hair, Qifrey has white, the elements of one's outfit is white the second has it black etc. I LOVE duos like that, they make me crazy. Tbh I think opening would be ok to watch now, really. Seeing Olruggio in it would really be a spoiler, but outside of it I do not think you could spoil yourself anything more. Its just nice and pretty visuals. Just like someone mentioned there is a spinoff manga Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen. Its not spoielry because it does not touch any of the plot topics of the main manga so its safe to read and I would recommend it a lot, if you love the idea of them cooking lmao

It got a giggle out of me, actually, that you like Olruggio's beard, because it's been a hot topic of debate in the fandom where many anime only people actually don't like him with a beard! As a manga reader, I can't imagine him WITHOUT one, so the general reaction towards his facial hair has been really funny to me. I think the concept of a Watchful Eye is a nice touch for worldbuilding. To me it really speaks to the level in which the mangaka is interacting with the world, if that makes sense? It makes perfect sense to me how a role like that of the Watchful Eyes would come to exist in the world, especially with how adamant the witch society is about keeping everything under wraps. It also addresses the idea that there is a possibility of one teacher being responsible for a gaggle of children going downhill (the teacher getting injured, the kids getting injured, mistreatment, etc.) - another responsible individual that oversees things would become a necessity to some degree.

Another lovely video! I don’t think you directly commented on this (I often listen to videos while doing chores so I occasionally miss things) but I really like the decision to have Olruggio use the drying ring on Coco this episode. I feel like it’s no coincidence that him doing that happens in the same episode that Qifrey admits how much he hates being wet. I saw a post on another site comparing this set up to the story of how bandaids were invented by a husband for his wife, who frequently cut herself while cooking. Along with some similar stories. Basically the idea of ‘I loved her to the point of invention’. I don’t know if Olruggio invented the drying spell. But he certainly did go out of his way to make sure he had a ring with that specific spell 😏

Alexandra Q

He is here! He is finally here! I remember that it was a little before his first appearance that I got spoil about his existence and the fact that he lived with Qifrey (I guess I never paid that much attention to the OP because it took me a few episodes to realize he was in it xD) and I could hardly wait from then on to get to see them interact, and what wonderful interactions they were. Yes, I see the vision so clearly, and I'm in love with the visions of these two men raising these four girls. Absolutely wonderful. Coco is such a sweet girl, wanting to get Agott to see the beautiful sights of the rainbow and to share with them even when all she gets from her is contempt and barbs. I don't know that I would be that persistent if I were in her shoes. Using magic in every day activities to help cement the lessons is such a good idea. And I love how you have to adjust the spells that you learn to fit the task you want accomplish. It was just that Coco knew the pyreball spell, but that she had to adjust it, slow tweak by slow tweak, to bake that veggie. That's smart, fun teaching. And I loved that the other girls still got to help, even if Coco was the one drawing the spells. Gosh, I can't wait to know what the heck is the full deal between Olruggio and Qifrey, because the way Olruggio's face blanched when Qifrey mentioned that if they took Coco's memories away they would need to take his as well was deliciously angsty. Now, the concept of Watchful Eyes is kinda funny to me. I mean, their whole deal is supposed to be that they make sure that the ateliers don't cover anything up. Okay, sure, that makes sense I suppose. What doesn't make sense is sending one person to live with them permanently, because obviosuly they would create relationships with the withces living in that atelier, and then they would be less inclined to repport any misconduct. I think a better system might be to rotate the Watchful Eyes every so often between ateliers to make sure no bonds are created and they are impartial. Not that I'm mad at Olruggio and Qifrey living together, I'm not, but it just seems an impractical system to me.

sanime

Olruggio best boy alongside Qifrey is here I know someone mentioned it already but I already love subtle things about their dynamic like for example Qifrey not liking being wet and Olruggio having his own little device to dry someone off. There is also the light surrounding Qifrey that sometimes is shrouded in darkness and the gloominess of Olruggio that he lights up with his magic. I don't think it will be mentioned but Olruggio apart from being a Watchful eye spends most of his time creating new gadgets and so he wasn't gone anywhere he was just locked in his room like the introvert that he is creating new stuff and being overworked and now that he has finished he emerged and we got introduced to him. My guess is since he was busy and plus it was a complicated topic to bring up that's why Qifrey hasnt introduced Coco to him yet. I could make arguments all day long about who the mom is of the group vs the dad lol but I love this little found family.

sanime

I don't know if Watchful eyes have to live at the atelier or it's more of a choice thing if they have to then yeah it is kinda impractical from a biased perspective. I mean having Olruggio a friend of Qifrey be the Watchful eye is already asking for things not to be reported so I don't know what they were thinking there but Qifrey in general seems to have connections that have allowed him to do quite a number of unconventional actions.

Alexandra Q

Oh, that’s a good point. I guess I just assumed the living together was part of the deal for Watchful Eyes, but it could very well be not absolutely needed. Yeah… that’s another thing I thought about. Olruggio being Qifrey’s friend seems like it should have stopped someone from making them a pair of Master and Watchful Eye. I’m curious to see if that ever gets explained.

LoreleiS

I love that he did not close the door all the way… no knocking needed . I wonder if Agott has sensory issues w high make her sensitive to sound. Two dads, an ex (or are they the same?) and the daughters they argue for custody over. Coco’s love. Of th e glow steps is so sweet and sad. You know that soften him to her. I like your theory about the masked witch. We know Quifrey has a favorite.. I wonder who Olruggio favorite is?

Michelle Jackson

Love hearing these theories haha, As a manga reader it’s fun to see the story through a different set of eyes after so long! Not so much a spoiler since it’s observed in the episode, but I’m not sure if you saw that Olruggio’s cap tassel is the same kind as Qifrey’s apprentices. Qifrey is the only one who has a different tassel. I wonder what that could mean~

Kael

Last member of the atelier finally accounted for. I love Olly so much. He gets introduced as a gruff, antagonistic guy and the facade lasts like ten minutes before you see that his magic is ‘warmth and light’. Considering it’s been one Situation after another with Qifrey and the girls since Coco joined the household, I genuinely think Qifrey forgot that another person lived there. The way he’s fidgeting while Olruggio yells at him? Definitely forgot. Or he thought he could have a cover story ready before Olruggio got back from wherever he’d been. Setting aside Qifrey and his Dear Friend though—I think Agott and Coco are also pretty interesting in this episode. I feel like they’ve managed to achieve some kind of neutral status with each other. Agott leaves the room when Coco agitates her (and that agitation definitely seems more to do with sharing a workspace that she originally had to herself imo) and she’s much more cordial when she turns Coco down for things. Watching how the show handles the relationship between these two has been a highlight for me.

Thank you so much for the comment! I’m very excited for “Olly” as well - I suppose it’s not a spoiler, since I’ve seen episode 7 (that's as far as I've seen as I type this, though) – I just ask folks please be careful with revealing nicknames until AFTER they see the episode where they are revealed, especially considering my reaction to said nickname - that way I can read your comment in the future! I dooo think it’s a little bit of a plot contrivance to forget OLRUGGIO of all people, but I’ll let it slide. The author better make it up in the future, though. ;) I’m very excited to see where Coco and Agott’s relationship goes in this series! Thanks for the comment!!

romaniablack

Right?! Agott COULD have sensory issues; we'll wait and see what the show gives us with that -- Thank you for the comment -- well, we can ASSUME Coco is Qifrey's favorite, but we don't know for sure -- I get nervous that some "theories" can be leading, but we'll just have to see where the series takes us! Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

Thank you for the comment! And AHHHH – THE BANDAID STORY CONNECTION – STOP OMG – *flails around like crazy* – Okay, I’m going to go fangirl more - THANK You for pointing this out!!!

romaniablack

Ohhhh, honestly, I’m not USUALLY a facial hair lover, but it just WORKS for him and makes him so unique! I can’t imagine him without it, either! We already have one twink-like man…we don’t need two; let’s have variety! ;) Yeah, the concept of the Watchful Eye is interesting and it’ll be neat to see how that functions as we get further into the series! Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

I am all for our new best boy Olruggio! Yessss, I love the balance of light vs. dark between him and Qifrey - it’s SO GOOD. He wasn’t gone?! It’s weird that the subtitles made Qifrey sound like he was gone – it’s a little weird to me that he wasn’t introduced…not sure I’m a fan of that but regardless, I’m a fan of Olruggio and I’ll let the weird writing there slide if we get to see more of him and Qifrey in this! Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

I am in LOVE with Olruggio!! I could watch the rest of the series just being the two of them – maybe the girls would stay out of danger if that happened! XD The vision is SO CLEAR though! I love how adorable Coco is and I want her and Agott to strengthen their bond in this – she’s so determined, and I love that about her character. I love the lesson that Qifrey teaches her as well – the way that cooking gets applied in it is so clever and was adorable to watch! OH. The angst in that moment when Olruggio thought that Qifrey’s memories could be taken as well is DELICIOUS indeed – these two men will be the death of me. I need more of them ASAP. And yes, the Watchful Eye is such a neat concept and I can’t wait to see it explored more in the series! And yeahhh, interesting with how that concept could breed relationships (pun intended) and you would think they’d rotate, but I’m curious what else we might learn as we go about it. Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

I apologize for taking so long to get to this comment but yessss, ahhhh! Olruggio definitely seems like the husband to Qifrey’s Wifey! 😛 I may need to react to this cookbook between these two men! Hmmmmm I really like Olruggio being totally opposite of Qifrey and as someone who doesn’t normally like facial hair on characters, he WORKS IT. I’ve been told that after Episode 7 I’m good to go so that’s exciting! And THANK YOU – no mention of Olruggio when he’s just “been there” is really bizarre to me – I’ll let it slide if the series makes up for it and shows us more Olruggio and Qifrey, sooooo….haha!! I’m so glad this one was worth the wait for you all and I cannot wait to see what we get next! AND YESSS OKAY – the dinosaur is what I was thinking of with the four-winged bird; thank you for those links! Wild stuff, right?! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

HAHAHA, we all want Olruggio – I agree, completely! 😛 I give Qifrey a little benefit of the doubt – he’s not TERRIBLE (there’s been far worse anime parental figures) but I do like talking about his faults, so I appreciate you adding to that, here. He definitely assumes a LOT and it’s fun to talk about it in the discussions! Now, the idea that Olruggio has been there and Qifrey NEVER mentioned it? That is a writing contrivance for me, but if they show us more Olruggio x Qifrey moments, I will forgive the series! ;) But you do bring up some good points, here! Agott is a layered character as always and I really like Olruggio and what we’re getting with him so far! I can’t wait to see interactions with Olruggio and the other girls! Yessss, I can see the Noe and Vanitas comparison as well! Nice! And yes, I already have Episode 7 done (out on Patreon now) but when I get to episode 8, I will be able to look at the OP – yay! And ahhhh, I may have to check out WHA Kitchen as I’m struggling with WHA withdrawals! Thank you for the comment!
