As an ardent figure skating fan (and I mean FAN fan, not the every four years at the Olympics fan, the plays fantasy team during the Grand Prix series fan), the moment this series got me was when they explained inside v. outside edge. That's when I was like "this could be special." Because it's such a technical sport that people often perceive as easier than it actually is.

Also! Just a point of clarification, but the skaters at the competitive level i.e. at Nationals, on the Grand Prix, World Championships, Olympics, etc. are actually technically on the "amateur" level, not professional. There's actually not really a professional circuit anymore, it fizzled out in the late 1990s/early 2000s. And those who moved on the professional level would not be able to compete in those amateur competitions anymore unless they abide by the guidelines set forth by the ISU (International Skating Union) as an amateur athlete. Also also! Though Tsukasa got to Nationals in ice dancing (not pairs skating, just to be clear), Japanese Nationals are like a blood bath. To put into perspective, USA Nationals in women's singles caps their senior age competition entries at 18 people, Japan had like 40-50 at their last nationals. Ice dancing in Japan is a significantly smaller field, but has actually see significant growth over the years, mainly when retired men's figure skater Daisuke Takahashi came out of retirement to compete in ice dancing. I think it made a lot of young Japanese skaters realize that, rather than languish in the middle or bottom of the pack in singles skating, you can develop your skating skills in the ice dancing discipline and maybe stand out a little more. Sorry for the dissertation lol

A new sports anime is here! I'm so happy, I had missed my dose of sports anime. Medalist is a show I have been meaning to watch for a while but never got around to, and this is the perfect excuse to get to it. And, well, I really enjoyed episode 1. The way Tsukasa is so genuinely impressed by Inori is adorable. He sees some of himself on her, of course, that seems inevitable, but Inori being such a quick learner and already having the basics down thanks to her passion for it. And I understand it, it is a blast to teach someone that is just this side of a prodigy and who is a quick learner. Inori made me share a few tears when she finally stood up to her mom and explained that skatting isn't a passing deisre for her. It takes real courage to do that, and I'm glad she could get through with it. I totally agree with everything you said about the mom. It's understandable that she is concerned for her daughter and doesn't want her to get hurt, that she is afraid Inori will trap herself in a hobby that she might only love so much because of a lack of experiencce in other games. But the mom needs to let go of that fear and understand that her daughters are two different people, and that just because the elder sister got hurt it doesn't mean that Inori will as well. Inori is her own person, and the mom needs to understand that. Although, I don think Tsukasa shot himself in the foor by anouncing that he'll get Inori to the Japan Nationals Competition. That's a hard goal to have. Overall, I'm just very excied for this one and to see what the world of figure skating is going to look like through this lens,

“What a little b*tch.” I LOVE that you didn’t let that little boy slide with that snide comment. 🤣 When I first saw the episode for myself I thought to myself "what a punk ass b*tch.” LMAO so I felt a little deja vu watching. So rude and for what? 😭 ( And what exactly is he even contributing. Lol let me stop, he's just a kid XD. The absolute nerve 😒) Idk, some of those scenes did make me think back at group projects and luckily I was always involved. Poor Inori, I can definitely see that both school and home has her distant. Maybe skating could help her build some confidence. I sure hope so. She seems so happy to practice at the ice rink. Being self taught blows my mind! What an ambitious girl. I'm sooo SO proud of her! I could never do any of the basics Tsukasa asked her to demonstrate for her mom and Hitomi. Kudos to her I would have cracked my head open on the ice ahshdjfnfkf. Although, the panic and sadness in her voice breaks my heart. I wish to sponsor her myself! If it's money I'm here for you 😭 After witnessing her courage how can I not root for her?? There's something so heartwarming that someone who knows what it's like to be in her shoes... to support her to reach her dreams. The same one Tsukasa was too shy and insecure to hold for himself. Ughhhhh I'm already sold! I'm relieved to hear there's already another season. Trust that im sat for this journey haha. For a first episode- my interest has peaked. I think for now I'd say Hitomi is my fav character because she's very responsible and cuts the BS. She's got a knack for professionalism and it hasn't exactly turned out the same for Tsukasa. He often says what he thinks/feels without thinking and it's great. The way he "coaches" and comes off across is so nostalgic. I didn't know who exactly I was being reminded off until you mentioned their voice actors later. Wanna guess? 🤭 Haiji from Run with the wind! I can't help but see how they mirror each other when it comes to being blunt and optimistic. I have to look back but they may even be around the same age. I wonder if their folks (parents) were similar as well. There's quite a lot in retrospect with what they showed with Tsukasa and Inori. Your honor… 🥹 they NEED each other. ANYWAY, I'm looking forward to the next episode! As always this was an amazing reaction and discussion. Whiteboard kun was certainly needed right off the bat 🤭 Tuesdays are never a day I look forward to so this is a nice change! Until next time 🥳

Ooohhh, I love that you’re a major skating fan and also YES, the fact that they are getting into the technical aspect of it? Love that about the series!

And thank you for the information on the "professional" skating level. And I am all for a dissertation - as an English teacher - I am so intrigued and interested in all this information, so thank you for sharing it in the comments! I appreciate it!

I’m so excited for a sports anime to be here and it be a new series! I am already so interested in this series! Tsukasa just latching onto Inori’s determination and genuine love of skating is indeed precious! You can tell he just gets so EXCITED to see her succeed. Inori really is a strong girl masked with lots of insecurity and anxiety - her being a kid and dealing with all of this with so much bravery - I just sympathized with her immediately. The mom is intriguing – I am curious if we’ll get to see the sister and what that will be like; I guess we shall see! And yes, Tsukasa announcing he’s getting Inori to the Japan Nationals Competition - SIR. The game is on, eh? I will say, after seeing the episode coming out this week, I am SO HYPED for this series! Let’s get into it this week! Thank you for the comment!

That boy was so rude! Definitely a little punk! I felt for Inori and her being left out. I hope she gets more confident through skating! I love how “herself” she seems on the ice - I really can’t wait to root for her in this series! And yeah, I would just sit on the floor of the rink the whole time and give up, hahaha!! I think a lot of us would sponsor her, though! And Tsukasa – I’m so sold as him as the coach as well! I am sat for the journey as well, haha! My curiosity is piqued and Hitomi is so cool! She has to put up with all these shenanigans; bless her! Oohhhhh, and YES! Oh my gosh, the Haiji vibes – maybe that’s why I’m so obsessed with Tsukasa already, hahaha! They really do mirror each other. I really am looking forward to Inori and Tsukasa working together! Thank you for the comment and kind words! I cannot WAIT to see where we go with the series, next! Cheers!
