Im glad to hear to enjoyed this movie! This is one of my all time favorite live actions movies. I love how intimate this movie is, and how it's literally just them talking the whole time, but yet it's still so entertaining. And Its almost like your actually there as a fly on the wall just watching them meet and getting to know each other and fall in love. I also agree with you somewhat that I liked Julie delpys character more than Ethan Hawkes. When I first watched it he seemed a bit pretentious and like he was trying too hard to impress her, but throughout the film I feel like as they get more comfortable with each other we get to see the real him more and learn more about him. I also agree with you that the scene where they pretend to talk to each other on the phone is the best in the movie. I really like how in that scene they simultaneously express their insecurities to each other and then also get reassured by the other. A close second would be the scene in the record store listening booth when they are both standing next to each other not saying anything, in that scene you can really feel the tension and it feels kinda akward but also exciting at the same time, and I think the film m did a great job a capturing that. And this is this is a piece of the article that reveals Fujimoto inspiration for chainsaw mans reze arc and before sunrise: Chainsaw Man Author Tatsuki Fujimoto Reveals How Reze Arc Was Inspired By The Movie Before Sunrise Chainsaw Man author Tatsuki Fujimoto has revealed in a pamphlet for Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, that the 1995 film Before Sunrise was one of the inspirations for Bomb Devil storyline. According to comments from Fujimoto, the film left a strong impression on him with “how the emotional distance between the man and woman gradually shrinks.” He noted that the film’s protagonists later “listen to music together in a cramped listening booth and draw physically closer as well.” Fujimoto stated that he wanted to depict that same kind of physical and emotional intimacy in the telephone booth scene between Denji and Reze. Much like the leads of Before Sunrise.......

Shout out to Username123. This movie meant a lot to me for personal reasons at the time and I credit it for being a big reason for expanding my taste for romantic movies. Really enjoyed seeing it commissioned and revisiting it after quite a few years. I won't go into too many thoughts because it would be spoilery but when I originally saw the movie it was a one off and I felt the ambiguous ending was perfect. It was a great litmus test whether you thought they met again or not. As I was curious from the discussion, 50 Austrian shillings is equivalent to around $5 USD haha. Also props to that bartender, he knew he wouldn't ever see that money but still came through. Liked the small detail of Celine pouring out the half empty wine glasses to steal them in her bag. For the most part the movie is just the two of them walking and talking together but it was still so engaging, love how naturalistic the dialog felt. I'm a bit of a nerd for behind the scenes stuff so the writing process and how they came up with a lot of it is interesting to me. For the initial scene where Jessie tries to get Celine to leave with him on the train, Delpy said she would never get off a train with some random guy. Apparently it was a long day of work-shopping the conversation and only after Hawke came up with the story of the time traveler that Delpy said she was convinced enough to go with him. The mock telephone scene was written by Delpy only after they started shooting in Vienna. This was one of my favorites too and for me was when the movie went from good to great. There's a lot of great interviews out there with Hawke, Delpy, and Linklater about how they came up with a lot of it. Probably too high of spoiler potential at this point but are quite fascinating.

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was a lot of fun to revisit after many years! And again, not a rewatch I would have sought out without this reaction. 🥰 What I most love about the film is the way it flows so well, it doesn’t feel like its runtime at all to me. I really credit that entirely to the performers, they come across so effortless. Was glad to hear that In the Mood for Love came up, I think these two films make a very interesting pairing! The scene here where they were having the roundabout conversation on the "phone" really reminded me of the pretend conversations Lizhen and Mowan had. Two of the same train, just emotionally moving in completely opposite directions. Great discussion about the leads! I love Celine and definitely agree with your reading of her character. I personally never got on board with Jesse, to me… his cynicism is so dishonest, because it is just snobbery. Anything he says is supposed to be seen and accepted as profound and true and extraordinarily perceptive, and anything anyone else says is immediately meant to be doubted and ridiculed. And I get that he’s insecure and very recently hurt with the kind of rejection he experienced, but nah, people like that mostly just sap the joy out of everything no matter how much they want to pretend they are playful. A rewatch many years on and I walked away with the same feeling: Celine can do much better. 😆 That bartender is the true romantic in this film! 😆 Now, themes of resistance?! 😆 Aplenty and expressed in very 90s romantic drama patterns! I find Celine the most interesting here, especially her resistance to viewing emotional detachment as some kind of superiority. And I want to bring up Decision to Leave here again, because Celine really reminds me of Seorae in the ways they both resist being reduced to specific ideas and desires, and don’t apologise for adding layers of complexity to how they present themselves. Thank you to Username123 for an amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

In the mood for love? Still am haha. What a good follow up entry! This certainly took a while to warm up to I have to admit. The ending or well.. the last third of the film definitely hooked me so I was moved in the end. Which impressed me because I was not expecting a little montage of all the places they visited at the very end. And it's curious how all those spots are empty.. you can help but ponder the moments where they were there. The places or areas now hold some sentiments they didn't before. Idk like you I was seeing some yellow flags throughout and I… wasn’t exactly a fan of Jesse. Celine however was EVERYTHING omg she was just lovely and insightful. Totally agree with how reserved he was even after Celine wearing hers on her sleeve. But now I understand how nervous he truly was. That telephone scene is also my favorite! 😍 that definitely earned brownie points and finally got me to root for them. I'm happy to have seen the film along you and I loved the discussion! It made me giggle to hear "bum" throughout because I was thinking the same way. You have an E train pass or whatever and then you have the audacity to ask for a bottle of wine "to pay back later." Yeah right... I'm glad you mentioned the trope of "coming from a background of privilege." Because I had trouble putting that into words. All in all this was a good film. Not at all my favorite. I guess... how should I say this. What I would have liked is seeing more of Jesse and Celine as a person without the other. I start to fall back to "in the mood for love" at times because we have side characters there and here isn't hardly any. P.S. I'm mad we didn't get to see the play with the cow! That would have been great. Oh well. Anywho thank you so much for the lovely commentary and reaction. Looking forward to the next commission 🥳

Yes, this was such a great movie! “Intimate” is a great word for it; I love the perspective as well! I definitely agree that Ethan’s character is trying REALLY hard at the start, but he does grow on you when he lets his guard down towards the end of the movie; but I really liked Julie Delpy’s character from the start. That phone scene is SO good - like you said, putting their insecurities out to bear and talking through it was really now – and then yes, them sharing that spot in the record booth in silence was so tense, in the best way. I really love that this movie inspired Tatsuki Fujimoto; I can definitely see it! And yesssss, that idea of “distance between them gradually shrinking” is such a good way to describe it. I love that description by them. It’s so good! Thank you so much for the commission; I’m so glad to see this movie!

This was a great movie and that’s awesome that you connected with it and it was one of your go-to romance movies as well! I really liked the ambiguous ending!! There’s so many places it can go, so I worried that seeing the sequels would spoil that ending for me; we’ll see if they’re commissioned down the road, I guess! Awww, that’s good to know about the shillings and awesome of that bartender! And her stealing the glasses was a really fun little added moment! And yes, the pacing never felt dragged at any point. I appreciate that Delpy wanted to make sure the dialogue was real enough to “actually” convince someone to leave with him; I’m with her on that. And the fact that she formed that mock phone scene? Love it! Such a creative mind and such a good scene! There’s a lot of creativity in the creation of this film and I love that the actors got to weigh in on the dialogue in the film as well! Thank you for the comment and all the information! 😀

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! I just met up with an old college friend and they mentioned they did a vacation in Vienna and went to the locations of this movie and I could finally say, “I’VE SEEN THAT!” XD I agree that the flow of this movie is soooo good. “Effortless” is a great word for it! And it’s wild that these films were so close to each other (Mood for Love and it); they really are similar! And yessss, the “pretend phone” convo is so good – I love them just laying those insecurities bare. Jesse just was a little snobbish and too cynical for me; but Celine? Love her character! I would roll my eyes at Jesse’s character in real life every two minutes, haha!! Your reading of him is so true - Celine could do much better, yes! But that bartender! WHAT a romantic! <3 Oh the 90’s romance drama patterns! Decision to Leave really is a great comparison with Seorae - I hadn’t thought of it that way, but wow, does it work!! Username123 did a great job with this commission! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Hahaha, this was indeed a great follow-up to In the Mood for Love! I agree 100% - the last third of the movie is what really hooked me, too! The cinematography was really well done throughout. And AGREED – not a fan of Jesse, personally. Celine was THE MOMENT! Loved her character! She…could do better, but I can get Jesse’s insecurity and nervousness at the start; she is fabulous! The telephone scene is also such a great development for their relationship! It would be cool if the sequels focused on either of them alone before they met up again, so we could get those moments you were talking about! And like “in the mood for love,” we get that with their characters and it helps out so much to make their characters more developed! And SERIOUSLY - the gays invited them to a midnight performance that would have been DIVINE! *sigh* What could have been! XD Thank you for the comment and kind words; it was a great commission!
