I love the scene Subaru breaks right before he dies in ep7... It must suck to be forgotten by everyone/everytime while you keep getting new memories with them. Also Subaru says " I would like to be rewarded for my efforts" after telling the oni story to Ram but does he really? Emilias name, petting Puck, getting a haircut from Rem are a couple "rewards" he wants so Subaru definitely has some blue oni in him :D

@23:20 So once again, this story is based on a real life thing. The Red Ogre Who Cried, is in fact a popular Japanese fairy tale, and is as Subaru described it. It seemed like you might have already caught onto this, but I want to make it clear translation wise, that both "ogre" and "demon" refer to the Japanese word "oni". "Oni" has no true stand in equivalent from the West, so different stories use different English words for it ("demon" and "ogre" being the most common). Anyway, Re:Zero uses "demon" for "oni", except for this bit, because in the real world, this fairy tale is translated as "The Red Ogre Who Cried". There's a lot that can be said about how the oni are different from christianic demons which can sometimes cause issues to people who are familiar with christianic demons. But I think the biggest thing is that the oni are not 1 side of a conflict, since demons are in opposition to angels in Christianity (at least I think, I stopped going to church like 20 years ago). And they have been depicted in Japanese cultural history from outright hostile anti human beings (who kill humans for fun etc) to ambivalent forces of nature that incidentally harm humans (kinda like a god of famine), to positive beings that humans worship (sometimes in the, lets pay off this guy so he doesn't fuck up our shit). So it's got a huge range. I will note that generally, the oni have been viewed most positively in the last couple hundred years. Imo, because the quality of life in Japan has been generally better than it has been in the ancient past, after since around the 1800's or so, and the general introduction of European technology. And hey what do you know, maybe those things we've been saying for hundreds of years that cause all kinds of bad shit for us, aren't actually so bad, since nothing bad has happened to our village in the last hundred years or so. Maybe they've just been misunderstood this whole time. 🤔 Maybe that's not quite right (I after all, do not live in Japan), but I think it's a plausible line of thinking for a folk tale type of thing. --- @35:40. I should note that Subaru uses the English word "ok" here (Emilia had a similar reaction at the end of Arc 1 when Subaru used the English "ok", and then proceeded to explain its meaning in pure Japanese.). I think I'll leave it there, because language is complicated with loanwords and how the people who speak it view said loanwords. --- @45:00 I won't go into detail about it, but I think there is a lot of metaphorical value in this story and a lot of ways to superimpose the framework of the blue & red oni onto the characters of Re:Zero. Which makes it wonderfully complex in my opinion. --- @50:15 I agree, Subaru did not think how someone saying they were gonna leave, but then hanged around until nighttime, surveilling the mansion, would come off as incredibly suspicious. --- @1:01:53. You touched on this, but there are actually 2 words in Japanese that get translated into English as "love". There's "suki" (pronounced "ski", and is usually translated as "like"), then there's "dai suki" (literally, "big like", which is often translated as "love"), and then "aishiteru" (which is usually translated as "love"). "Dai suki" is closest to how "love" is generally used in English. You can use it for inanimate objects (like "I love ice cream"), and you can use it pretty freely. "Aishiteru" on the other hand, is a very serious word most of the time (and is overused in anime vs real Japanese). That's the "you're engraved in my soul" type of thing. It can only be used with people, and it's a quite serious marker of one's affection. It's like more of the, we've been dating for a few years, and maybe we should start thinking about popping the question. I should note that, in this particular scene, it sounds like Subaru is saying "dai suki", though it's kinda hard to tell, because of Subaru's pronunciations isn't exactly the easiest to interpret for someone who doesn't actually speak Japanese, and also due to word order differences, those are the last words he says before he gets his throat slit, so you only actually hear "dai" and never actually get to the "suki" part. So in the Japanese, it's not the ultimate form of affection (though I would say that it probably would be really fast to get to "dai suki" land in the 3 or 4 days it's been). --- Anyway, the torture scene is one of my favorites of the show (and especially in this early section of episodes). The voice acting is simply incredible and the OST is really great too. There's just so much emotion in this scene that I feel like most anime rarely get to this kind of level. Of someone like truly having a mental breakdown (and for an extended period too). --- Oh, and on the topic of Subaru not being able to tell anyone, I think this (completely unrelated) meme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aS0-P4JR9PU) is the perfect embodiment of Subaru. --- I should also note, there is a pretty notable and unique form of side content that Re:Zero has, called the IF stories (and note, I'm not recommending that you should read them). Basically, every April 1st (Subaru's birthday), Tappei writes a short story, and features basically the main story, but with Subaru making a different decision than he did in the main anime. And this episode is where one of the IF stories starts, with Subaru deciding to not kill himself and to take up Betty's offer to run away. This is actually the 2nd such point of the story (with the first being in Arc 1, where Subaru instead chooses to not call for the guards). Anyway, they're quite interesting, and if you are so inclined to learn more about them, after you finish season 2, there are some video summaries that were made by a Re:Zero YouTuber that give a 15~25 minute (well, except for the one thats way longer than the rest) summary, with spoilers from past Season 2 of the anime (they were written years after these sections were originally written, and so they so usually include quite a bit of material past where they chronologically branch off of) clearly marked, and very skippable. I've seen some other reactors react to those, so I am pretty sure they are ok with their videos being used that way. But anyway, that's a long time from now. But I wanted to let you know they exist, so if you wanted to dip into them (and in a spoiler free and time efficient manner), you could consider it. They're obviously non essential to the story, but the nature of them (being what if) I find makes them a lot more interesting and easy to get into than the other side stories.

I started watching you for LOTM (It is my favorite Novel) but what a day to be here that you are doing Rezero too. I actually disliked the anime so much on my first watch, but I kept rewatching it, giving it another chance, and watching reactions to it to get another oppinion. By the time the 4th season started Airing, I was in love with the story enough to read the source material (The Webnovel). ReZero is often called one of the "Big Three" of Isekai... which is funny because people often argue over what the big 3 is (Rezero, Tensura, Mushoku Tensei, Tanya, Konosuba, and Overlord are all viable options)

That "wuuuuuweeeeeuuuu" always hits hard haha, that scene was terrifying. It's so cool rewatching the show and remembering what s1 brought to the table. I love how you never get bored with this anime, between the dialogue, the mysteries, the action, and the comedy, it's always engaging. Btw, "The Red Ogre Who Cried", is a popular japanese fairy tale.

Yesss, that is so sad that he has to relive this timeline and re-forge those relationships, when you have already developed them countless times. That’s also a really good note about the Blue Oni and all that he’s “giving” instead of taking. Good points – thank you so much for the comment!

romaniablack

Thank you for the information and comment -- and yessss, this series is SO engaging! I love all the aspects about it so far! Also, that wuuuuweeeeuuuuu is HORRIFYING! SO scary! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

Heyyy! I know, doing LOTM and ReZero at the same time is so good! I am really excited to get into this story with you all! And I have heard of Mushoku Tensei and Overlord, but not the others (keeping away from descriptions since I’m a blind reactor) but thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

Thank you for the comment! Yes, I’ve watched other anime where Oni = Demon, so I assumed that was the case here, but thank you for clarifying! 😀 I also appreciate the differences from Christian demons as well – THAT is super fascinating; I love learning that! The use of language is definitely complicated in this show, but in a way I enjoy seeing it play out and develop with the characters and Subaru. And Subaru developing these close feelings with Rem and Ram so quickly does lend to him being so lonely, perhaps, in the real world and craving those deeper connections. I totally agree - the torture scene with Ram, Rem, and Subaru was sooooo well done! And AHAHAHAH “You have to tell them you’re fine” is SO PERFECT for Subaru in this! Love that! SUBARU’S BIRTHDAY IS ON APRIL FOOL’S OMG. THAT IS CRUEL. That’s actually hilarious and interesting! Thank you for noting those! I may have to ask the mods about those videos too but that’s so neat to learn about! Thank you for all of that info and for the comment!

One thing I really enjoy about Re:Zero is how Subaru's trauma from what he experiences in his loops isn't shied away from. For example, I really enjoy that you see him struggle to process that he is alone in his experiences. That, no matter how much he wants it, Rem and Ram don't remember what he does. He is left behind with all these memories they don't have. Just seeing Subaru yell and cry at the unfairness of this really sells how confusing and alone he feels. Not only that, it's nice to see that the effects of these violent deaths have a real, tangible consequence on him in future scenes. When Rem killed him, not only did he go through the physical trauma of that, but the psychological betrayal of a person who he trusted and thought was his friend. The fact that the very next loop starts with him having a panic attack and being bedridden because of how distraught he is really makes every death feel that much more serious. These aren't experiences that he can just shrug off, and I like that. I feel like it adds an amount of realism to the series and furthers the stakes. But anyhow, I'm glad you're enjoying the series. I look forward to the next episodes. Thank you again for the reaction

romaniablack

Yes, Subaru is definitely put through it and I appreciate that his trauma is front and center for us. I want to give him the biggest hug! And yeah, the psychology of it is wild to see that effect on him! It’s very real! Thank you so much for the comment and all the details here and the kind words! I appreciate it and can’t wait to see where this season takes me!
