So I just remembered something I wanted to bring up! It's a really small detail but it's actually come up a few times - Yan Wushi's particular need to do certain things certain ways - I think the first instance is when he and Shen Qiao are sharing a meal and Shen Qiao makes note of how he lines up his green beans/stacks the teacups, and it's easy to miss since the real focus goes to how frivolous Yan Wushi can be with his power. Then again last video when he makes Shen Qiao a meal, arranges the sparrows just so, and then says, 'no, you have to eat them like this.' Then there's the time in the monastery where Shen Qiao first notes Yan Wushi 'not being likely to eat such a thing' when describing the clumped up noodles, and then he says that Yan Wushi is 'particular about cleanliness' - so Shen Qiao washes the chopsticks, getting him a new bowl, and then only picking out the vegetables that hadn't touched the noodles for him. And Yan Wushi says the taste 'isn't as awful as he imagined'. 🥺 But the part that really gets me is how when Yan Wushi runs his finger along the edge of his bowl, the narration describes it as being of poor craftsmanship, of having a grime 'that could no longer be washed off' - and yet Yan Wushi, of all people, touches it. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it almost feels like a parallel to Yan Wushi himself? Because Shen Qiao just smiled at him and shared food with him and called him friend, is someone who believes in goodness - and I think it's around this point that he decides that it's a lie, and he refuses to believe it - because the grime of human nature will never be wiped clean. The first time they share tea together, Yan Wushi picks up the osmanthus candy with chopsticks, not his hands. Preceding this scene, Shen Qiao had coughed up blood on him; the book describes Yan Wushi having 'murderous intent'. And yet not long after that, Yan Wushi is grabbing Shen Qiao by the chin and wiping the blood from his lips. Then Yan Wushi's 'strange proclivities' happen and he's hand feeding Shen Qiao in public; I feel like their relationship develops with every meal they share, and how that leads Yan Wushi to slowly getting more and more comfortable/familiar with touching Shen Qiao - it's a consistent escalation. I might have missed some other scenes, but I do remember when Shen Qiao took inititive to order side dishes for Yan Wushi. There's also the fact Shen Qiao can tell the personalities apart just from seeing how they eat! It's really interesting to think about. Because it's hard for me to imagine Yan Wushi doing stuff like this with anyone else, let alone sharing meals with them. In the discussion, you mention Yan Wushi wanting Shen Qiao to dominate him, along with how he acted towards Madam Fang - to me, it feels like he prefers people being callous or rough with him because he sees it as honest - I don't think he believes that gentleness exists without an ulterior motive - therefore when people act like Madame Fang does, they all want something from him. Only Shen Qiao doesn't. 'When have I ever been good to you?' Yan Wushi asked him. 'You don't need to feel indebted to me. I do as I please without regret. Do you regret what led us here?' Only Shen Qiao doesn't want anything from him; but Yan Wushi still wants and wants and wants Shen Qiao. I think he feels safe enough to want him without having to give an excuse for it now.

It's so interesting that while Yan Wushi is teasing Shen Qiao about him protecting Yan Wushi at the risk of his own life when he could just as easily give him up, the opposite is just as true! Even though he acknowledges that he can't defeat the group in his current state, Yan Wushi doesn't give a crap about the Hehuan Sect hunting him down. All of his concern goes towards Shen Qiao and his efforts to protect him. In this life-threatening situation, both of them are so engrossed in saving the other that I feel a bit pitiful towards the Hehuan group pursuing them. 😂 Like?? HellooOOOOooo, we're trying to capture you both to brutally torture you. Can you two stop being gay for just one second to respect our efforts!! 🤣 Yan Wushi asking him, "Foolish A-Qiao, when have I ever been good to you?" when we KNOW he's done some actual good for Shen Qiao. Strangely enough, despite Yan Wushi's wholehearted confidence in himself, I hear a bit of self-deprecation in this one line and the way he keeps bringing up how good Shen Qiao is. Like, "I'm a bad man, so naturally, the things I do are bad. So, how could anything I do to/for you be good?" To me, at first glance, it sounds like he's just unapologetic about being himself, but I can also interpret it as him thinking that Shen Qiao is so genuinely good that it makes Yan Wushi feel a bit less proud about how not-good he himself is. So, he constantly brings up how foolish and good Shen Qiao is as a sort of a way to remind himself that he's too bad of a person to deserve Shen Qiao's protection. Along those reaching thoughts of mine, Yan Wushi placing Shen Qiao in the Buddha statue— a receptor of worship and devotion— signifies the subconscious change in Yan Wushi's view of Shen Qiao. Like Yan Wushi's views on Buddhism (or, at least the Buddhist sects) the statue looks grand and imposing, but is cheap and hollow inside. When Yan Wushi used it to hide himself during his secluded cultivation, it was like, even Buddhism could be used to shelter demons (in the same way that Abbott Xueting uses Buddhism to mask his greed and ambition). But, by placing Shen Qiao— whom he views as the epitome of grace and purity— in that hollow statue, it fulfills its intended purpose as a place of reverence and protection. If you haven't noticed, I'm a bit delulu about YanShen. I fully own that. 🤣 And I don't think you're crazy for thinking of Yan Wushi as a masochist who just wants Shen Qiao to toss him around and step on his neck! He would be THE biggest power bottom, who would probably provoke Shen Qiao into being rough, and then at the end, say something like, "Who knew that the virtuous Daoist Shen would become such beast when faced with a handsome man such as this venerable one? 😢"

Yesss, that is so true about both of them engrossed in saving the other! Hahaha!! That line is so true about them! And yes, I was like, YWS, you have done good for him behind the scenes! And yesss, it does seem like YWS feels “less” in comparison to SQ’s good at times. But yessss, it also seems like he’s self-deprecating to show he doesn’t feel he’s “worthy” of SQ. SIR. I love that note about the statue and SQ~ And yessss, I am just as delulu about YanShen, yes! And that note about being THE biggest power bottom and teasing SQ until he gets rough with him, only to tease him about it? Oh, I can SEE THE VISION as well! Thank you so much for the comment!! I am so in love with these chapters!

Yesss, that is such a good point to bring up about how particular YWS is and how it ties to how he actually believes himself to be – oohhh, that is juicy! I agree, the escalation is there with each meal they share – it’s a fascinating development for Yan Wushi, especially! And OH YEAH, I cannot imagine him doing these things for anyone else! And that makes sense about wanting people to be “honest” with him and in his mind, that means being callous or rough, because of how he sees himself. I love how you analyze them both here – it’s so good! Thank you for the comment and kind words!

79 has my favorite art of the book and probably the series. I say probably because Shen Qiao's face looks a bit off, but Yan Wushi? Heartbreaking. Kinda sad, kinda guilty, a tiny hint of a smile. It's very good. I love MXTX a whole bunch, but I kinda think of them as 'babies first danmei' It's great to break into the setting, and generally safe for younger teens. Right before the kiss, if feels like Yan Wushi is trying to be mean on purpose. To make Shen Qiao hate him. The kiss was for himself though. Definitely a 'goodbye' My feelings on the consensual argument is always 'Its fiction. If it was real life, heck no, but in my smutty romance? Fine' I dont think kissing counts as dual cultivation. It's generally sex. But a lot of these settings have this. Cultivation Partners in MXTX novels. Thousand Autums Demonic sects use a twisted version of Pair cultivation that is parasitic.

I just LOVE chapter 79! ^^ All of those emotions are in Yan Wushi’s face: Guilt, sadness, a hint of happiness that he kisses (or gets to at least) SQ! UGH, so good! I don’t want to treat MXTX’s works like they’re juvenile, but I get what you mean. I still think they’re high quality – I feel sometimes when people say “babies first,” it diminishes or suggests it’s “not as good,” and I don’t think that about her work. I agree with you on YWS’s view that he wants SQ to hate him and also is getting that kiss for himself - and that “Not in real life, but here, okay” is SUCH a vibe! 😀 The idea of dual cultivation is interesting - I’ll be curious to see what else we get from it in Volumes 4 and 5 – thank you so much for the comment! 😀
