*NOSTALGICALLY ROMANTIC HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

WOW, was this a 90's nostalgia trip for me, but as a farm girl growing up, this was so much fun to watch! I also really loved the ROMANCE and chemistry between our leads in this and the discussion led to some INTERESTING discussions to be had on this rare gem of a great Studio Ghibli film!

Loved the reaction and discussion! Love this Ghibli marathon we’ve been on this past year+! I remembered little of this one from seeing it many years ago, the rewatch was a lot of fun. 🥰 Various moments I loved: “I can’t hear you when you tell me to stop talking!” Never! 🤣 The amount of tiny animations spent on making everyone feel like a full person, may be one of my favourite ones in terms of that among Ghibli films. The whole scene of them figuring out how to eat the pineapple was hilarious. 😆 The beautiful scene of her floating on air! 🥹 Not wanting to avoid PE to not make it seems like she’s on her period, poor thing. Traumatic memories. 😭 Loved the whole explanation of the processing of the flowers. “Farmville propaganda!” 😆 I grew to hate that absentee meat-bag of a father, there’s a variety of ways to explain to your child you don’t want them to become a child actor! + the random child abuse. 😑 “I was only speaking my mind!” This line by one of those meddling relatives, ugh. Who gives a fuck what you think about anything, granny?! Regardless of the ending, wow, that annoyed me. 😅 “That train ain’t waiting for nobody!” 😆 Wow, that scene of all the kiddos following her as she changed trains was so much fun and so sweet! 🥰 There was something beautifully ‘over-exposed’ in the colouring of the film, it was only towards the end that I realised that so many of the “memories” were done with mostly white backgrounds or very bright ones among all the colours! Many deeper shades for scenes which were set in the present time. This was such an interesting way of showing the way memories smooth over specific details. And then that little anecdote from the discussion about the studio having to take ages to find the right shade of red was fascinating, considering this was before RGB colour identification was possible, I guess - which would take literally only seconds! 😭 Now, of course, themes of resistance? 😆 Plenty! I think most prominent was the resistance against complying with what society and her family consistently imagined for her; and the way the ‘fantasy’ of the rural vs the urban came in. From the ways she needed to learn differently, to the ways she wanted to work and what she considered to be ‘respectable’ trade, and how different this was to what was the ‘fairy tale’ at the time. I’m sure a fair bit of the film was written to be an antithesis to the 'urbanite dream,' but I don’t really want to fully consider the film as dishonestly pushing an agenda of a female character abandoning 'city-life' for some barefooted farm-romance… but a few hints of that are certainly in there, in my opinion. Overall, I do think it earnestly and honestly paints a picture of Taeko as a character. Thank you to Shimoyama for another amazing commission! 🥰 Cannot wait for the next entry! 💙

Honestly, I 1.) did not realize there were so many Ghibli films I hadn’t seen and 2.) I’m finally getting to check so many of them off, so YAY! Seriously, the tiniest details in this movie are so well done! I’m a sucker for them! There are so many little moments that are so good and relatable, like the pineapple scene; puberty, etc. And yes, FARMVILLE PROPAGANDA! XD Yeah, the dad’s abuse of our girl was just…OOF CITY. Definitely tying into the daughter’s resistance to her family’s life, but still loving her family enough to stay “close,” but far enough away in the country. I love all the colors and the saturation in this film, too; you explain it so well! And yes, the studio taking so long to get that shade when technology now would give them answers SO much faster…it’s wild to see how tech has modernized things! Oh yeah, I think overall the movie is sincere with being more anti-urbanite than promoting a trad wife Amish dream life, hahaha!! But Ghibli is usually pro-nuclear family, and heteronormative in its romance, but with Taeko and Mr. Farm Man, I’m fine with it - their chemistry and relationship was so earnest and sweetly unfolded throughout the story! But that ending with the children following her? Adorable! Shimoyama did really well with this commission, indeed! Thank you for the comment!

Joined to show appreciation for these Ghibli reactions. These more grounded, slice-of-life movies are my favorites; this one, Whisper and Grave in particular. Hopefully you'll keep doing these. The Tale of Princess Kaguya should be high up on your list!
