*STOLEN HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

Sunspots knocks it out of the park again, as we take a look at this VERY relatable, very empathy-inducing, tug-on-your-heartstrings story that combines found family, struggling to survive through adversity, and the unreliability of those we consider to be the closest to us -- WHAT a film!

Loved the reaction and discussion! 🥰 I’ve seen the film a bunch of times by now, so with this reaction it was so wonderful to experience a first viewing! Also made me realise how gradually a lot of the ‘reveals’ are weaved into the narrative e.g. I completely forgot that we don’t learn that Shota is not their biological child until about 40min into it. I generally really adore the structural choices and the pacing. In someone else’s hands, I could see someone going for a circular structure (maybe where we would see some of the interrogation first and then go back in time to learn about the family, etc), and I do love that structure elsewhere... But what was done here I think is exactly right (and so masterful) – because when in the interrogation scenes the detectives present their ‘information’ and you go “That’s not true, actually.” it is direct evidence of how right this choice was! Various things I loved: In general, the layers of complexity getting slowly added on and on. ‘She ate that orange with the rind! Don’t mess with that woman!’ 🤣 I love how gently they try to find out more about Yuri and how well they actually do it, they don’t question or pry or interrogate. 🥹 I love the idea of a pension as a kind of damages payment against life 😆 The scene in the bath where Nobuyo and Yuri compare their near-identical scars. Aki’s client wiping his tears off her thigh. “Don’t you take this grandma from us!” ... 30 seconds later 😭 “Don’t these belong to someone?” and that kind of breaking the spell for Shota. Yes, I also loved Nobuyo and Osamu’s relationship so much! 🥰 Yeah, I wish we could have had more with Aki, too. This film could have easily been a nice 2.5h, it wouldn’t have outstayed its welcome with me! Just the detail of Aki using her sister’s name ‘Sayaka’ as her pseudonym at work? Wow, that’s a whole can of worms. The cast overall was so amazing! 🥰 Loved the grandma, of course (you also saw her as Tokue in Sweet Bean). And I was so happy to see how much you enjoyed Sakura Ando’s performance – I adore all of her work so much! 🥰 She also delivers THE lines of the film for me, especially: “That’s just what mothers imagine.” She is so powerful in her scenes. Now, themes of resistance?! 😆 Of course, an absolute abundance! Loved this film encouraging the anti-capitalist soapbox, as it should. 😆 Most of all, I am really interested in how openly the film examines the ways the perception of “legitimacy” can spread harm, especially when it is mistaken for morality or actual care. And all the ways genuine care, safety, belonging and kindness are so easily destroyed for something official or “recognised.” And that particular beautiful little anecdote about the little girl Koreeda wrote this film ‘for’ just encapsulates his work so well, I feel. Thank you for allowing this amazing film to take you on its journey and for such a rich discussion! 🥰 Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

Thank you for the comment and kind words and this was SUCH a great movie, so thank you so much for the commission! The pacing and structure of all the reveals were amazing! I think that it worked really well throughout this film and made for such a rewarding viewing! Yuri and her integration into the family was so well done and delicate! The way that Nobuyo connects with her through their scars was such a pivotal moment! The GRANDMA – this movie was cruel! I loved the coming-of-age in real time with Shota – his actor did SO WELL with his character; and even though Nobuyo and Osamu are doing kind of messed up things, they still have such a good relationship with one another. I agree; the movie could have been another 30 minutes longer to have more Aki content and I would have not thought it was too long! There was so much we didn’t get to full explore with her character that had layers, like the “Sayaka” pseudonym. Okay, the Grandma DID seem a little familiar, so her being in Sweet Bean makes TOTAL SENSE! She’s so sweet! SO MUCH RESISTANCE hahaha! And yes, the anti-capitalist soapbox getting put front and center – and yeah, that topic of legitimacy is so good to note! Thank you for the comment and the commission - this was such a fun journey! I really enjoyed it!
