Crazy idea , probably not true but it was hinted in the first ep that some ppl think Minori might not be Asa's natural mother. This was proven false when we see her pregnant, but what if it's the other way around? She had Asa with someone else and Asa's "dad" either knows it or suspects it. Explaining why he didn't want to get married and why he dosent speak or is very distant.

Loved the reaction and discussion! What a powerful Rule of 8! 😅 Various things I loved: Yes! Loved that teacher! I wish she’d been there for Asa in the earlier episode. “He’s the pizza inside the cardboard box!” I about died. 🤣 Asa’s little grumpy face as the adults didn’t take her boba-themed rebellion as badly/seriously as she’s maybe wanted. 😆 Makio sitting next to Asa rather than across from her, this was probably such a deliberately thought-through choice for her. THE line for me this episode: “Loneliness is her friend but it shows me no mercy.” Stunning. Yes! 🥰 I adored Tono making that comment to Kasamachi about his father, too. I think sometimes it is so easy, especially as older adults, to just join in in the joking-around when someone shares a moment like that from their childhood, something that’s maybe a small thing or the person is presenting as largely inconsequential and now more “funny” than anything (but then again, remembering it so vividly so many years on I’d say is evidence it WAS quite consequential). But I personally think that is one of the mechanisms of intergenerational trauma perpetuating itself. I think we should acknowledge the small things and I think we should be careful about, and thoughtful with, our choices of when to join in and when to maybe take a different route as Tono did here. Asa’s VA and her crying always gets me in this episode, there’s just something so real in that performance that just makes me feel like there is literally a person’s despair right there in front of me. And the restraint of the series to have this moment in episode 8! Masterful. Beautiful discussion and thank you for your openness. 🫶 This show has such an amazing cast of characters and it is always so good to see how many different avenues of discussion they inspire! Looking forward to the next episode! 💙

Thank you so much! WHAT a rule of 8! Seriously!! That teacher is seriously the best in anime so far that I’ve seen, at least in a slice of life series – she really needed to be there for Asa. Tee Hee – I won’t hesitate to add jokes with Kasamichi in this. The grumpy boba face was so adorable - SUCH rebellion! XD And yes, Makio sitting next to Asa is definitely a choice! “Loneliness is her friend but it shows me no mercy” is such a hard core line and I’m still not over it! Tono really proved himself in this!! I love him and his defense of Kasamichi; so true about adults taking it easy and joking about childhood trauma. Tono is such a real one! Great points about Tono and intergenerational trauma, here. Asa’s VA is INCREDIBLE. Just AMAZING. Her performance is masterful, indeed, and so raw! Thank you so much for your kind words and comment! I’m so excited to see what discussion we get in the episodes to come! Cheers!

Gosh, I can never see Asa breaking down without getting choked up myself. That was such a visceral, amazingly executed moment. And I love that Makio comes in and just hugs her. For all the faux pas that Makio makes socially, when it really counts she almost always manages to pull herself together and help. The way I read the wolf at the beginning was also as a representation to Asa's loneliness. How it feels like this big beast that's feral and hungry inside her, something that she doesn't know how to quiet and satisfied. Asa is such a teen, lol, playing chicken with school and going to drink boba over her existential crisis. Yes, I love that moment when they finally find Asa and Makio, Kasamachi and Tono just stand aroud her eating their own bobas and critiquing them, Asa is so grumpy, and I feel like she feels that was a punisment for her xD While Asa might not appreciate it just yet, I'm sure when she's a little older she'll understand and see how these adults all cared for her, and how she had a support system there for her when she was struggling. Yeah, this teacher needs to get together with Hayashida from March Comes in Like a Lion and teach all the other teachers how to properly care for their students xD I'm sure everyone would benefit from that. One of the things I appreciated about this show from the first moment I started watching it is how it portrays grief, and how different people handle it, especially Makio. I'm much more like Makio, colder in that sense, and when I feel grief is usually in short flashes and short lived, though I've also been blessed with encountering little of it so far in my life. But that's not a kind of grief that you see often portrayed in TV; it's usually the flashier, more dramatic kind. So this is a nice moment of connection for me. Kasamachi and Tono becoming sort of friends through this episodes was great to see. We've seen in previous episodes that Kasamachi was a little bit jealous and insecure of Tono and how Makio might feel about him. And yet, he was chill with him through this whole episode and they even bonded. Honestly, I just think that's something that I love about they way they wrote Kasamachi, as this perfectly masculine man that is not afraid to be open and communicate and trust, and at every turn just side steps any toxic masculinity that he could perform.

Asa breaking down was so heartbreaking and the VA did an INCREDIBLE job with the end ofthis episode! And Makio’s reaction? Ugh, just so heartwarming and breaking at the same time! And I agree completely with the wolf being Asa as well with her loneliness. Her Boba with her existential crisis! Hahaha!! Yes! And the way that the “adults” punish her by drinking alongside her? Hilarious! And yes, I think once she’s older she will appreciate this support system!! I was literally thinking of March Comes in Like a Lion when this teacher took center stage this episode and I loved that so much! What a great educator and someone caring for Asa’s wellbeing. The way this show handles grief with Makio and Asa is so amazing, agreed. I really haven’t seen a show tackle it like this one and I just adore it for it. And Tono and Kasamichi developing as friends!! Yessss! I love how far they’ve come! That’s such a good point about Kasamichi and his masculinity as well! <3 UGH, I love to see it! Thank you so much for the comment!
