As a lifelong Orihime fan, this episode did so much to me -- I went through so many emotions (apologies for my aggression against Yhwach) but this episode was PHENOMENAL - Studio Pierrot really went and amped the budget up for this, didn't they? WOW.

No offence intended - this is just how I feel after watching the reaction/discussion, but I don't know why you're throwing so much shade at Rukia this episode. I'll prefice by the fact that I absolutely love Orihime, she's my second favourite character after Ichigo himself, "Goodbye, Halcyon Days" is my favourite chapter, and this episode made me cry. But I don't get he need to take away from Rukia in order to acknowledge Orihime's struggles. I understand and feel the fear that Rukia arriving would take away from Orihime's moments, I really do, but it got to a point where several times throughout the episode and discussion it felt like you took dedicated time to mention how inadequate Rukia's power is here. I see Renji sending her ahead as less of a mark of how well he thinks she'd fare against Yhwach, and more an acknowledgement that she has a greater need to help Ichigo at that moment - since this series started with her and Ichigo. Renji and Rukia would both probably get destroyed immediately by Yhwach, as Byakuya said in the previous episode, but they're there as his friends. Ichigo and Rukia never actually fight side-by-side in the manga, and the last time they speak to each other before the final chapter iirc is after the first invasion when Rukia is in the hospital. So this and Yhwach's acknowledgement of her as the Soul Reaper who started Ichigo down this path were both sorely needed imo. Their banter, while maybe misplaced (though honsetly I don't know when would have been a good place to have it in this stage of the arc), is a great reminder that these characters *are* friends. Rukia's line about "Ichigo not losing his spine" is a good call back to the Fullbring/Lost Agent arc, when Ichigo does succumb to despair and really is in desperate need for someone (in that cast, Rukia) to save him. Rukia's arrival too seems like a great reference to Ichigo coming to save her in the Soul Society. She even says the exact same line as he did. Even if the power-balance is still skewed towards him, Personally I feel that the sentiment matters more than that. Rukia using her Bankai is a very last-resort move. She can barely stand as is, and Yhwach doesn't seem any weaker after Ichigo's barrage of attacks. So a last ditch effort to throw both of their strongest moves at him seemed in order to me. I both agree and disagree with you somewhat about Yhwach. Yes he still sorely lacks development, even if he still got more than the manga. But I think it's a bit unfair to throw away *all* of his lines as trash. His line about Ichigo's bankai "almost screaming that he doesn't need his friends" is at least more poingent than the rest, and a possible examination of how Ichigo's powers betray that deep down he still might not be a person to be willing to trust his friends to protect him. Or it might just be a cynical interpretation because Yhwach is the one saying it. Nevertheless I think it's worthwhile, even if you (and I) think his "power" monologue is overdone. On to smaller notes, Yhwach's sword did not leave the hollow hole, it left a normal blade stab wound through Ichigo's heart. The frame you paused on in the discussion is just the one after Orihime heals him, so you don't really get to see the original wound. I might not be able to convince you, but I'm quite certain that what Orihime said when her speech cut out were the lines overlayed on the fire lillies at the end: "Bye bye, Kurosaki-kun. I'll take it all on, okay?" I originally also thought that she must have said "I love you", and that gave me flashbacks to certain other series' and made me cry harder. But hearing her talk overlayed on the fire lillies convinced me otherwise. Apologies if this was rambly, I don't tend to comment. I just generally really like your discussions (For Re:Zero as well! Al really loves Appas) and felt like I should.

This is perhaps my favorite episode of the series. It was amazing to see Orihime’s full potential pay off after years and arcs of setup. Also, great, Great reaction! (Also I am one who ships Chad and Ganju. Ganju was like Chad’s own personal cheerleader at the beginning of this episode.)

Thank you for the comment and kind words! My girl Orihime got her moment in the sun and it was so worth it to see in the anime!! It all came full circle with her abilities -- as Aizen predicted? Of course it was. :P

Hey, no offense taken! It’s cool to share your perspective! I DID throw shade at Rukia – though it was mainly more at the writing for the episode than meant for her character, personally. I know that can be hard to detect at times, because sometimes I’m talking from a Teacher/Writer standpoint at Kubo directly, but it’s about the character themselves. I am glad there’s another Orihime fan in the comments, too, because I love her and had to deal with SO MUCH grief in the forums for YEARS about folks not appreciating her. If you were there, you KNEW. I think if you weren’t around during the time when the forum go-ers were jeering at Orihime and the intense IchiRuki vs. IchiHime wars in the forums, then my thoughts might not hit fully, and that’s okay. I definitely was originally worried that Rukia was going to take away from Orihime, but like I noted in the discussion, I’m glad that didn’t happen. However, from a writing standpoint, I totally get the symbolism of Renji sending her forward as a mark that he THINKS she’d fare well against Yhwach – but also….her shikai and bankai were nowhere near adequate to handle him at all. And in a real life-death scenario, it might have made more “logical” sense to go with her and let Chad and Ganju handle the statue guards (they probably could have honestly). Like I said in the discussion, it was more of a “let’s choose symbolically and thematically great” things vs. “logical to the plot things” – I’ve said it in the discussions that sometimes, to me, one of Bleach’s worst elements of fiction is plot and one of its best is character and theme, so that’s more to the tune of that. And yeah, Rukia and Ichigo really don’t fight side by side in the manga, and it was nice to see them like that here – but again, I was afraid it would take away from Orihime’s moment, which was built up so well - again, that I get that isn’t the case with what we end up with. But yeah, her Bankai is supposed to be last resort move – which makes the decision for her to go up against the strongest threat they’ve ever had alone – just a symbolic/thematic move for the series, but didn't add up when she could barely fight against As Nodt with it. And that’s all I was poking fun at – I love Rukia as a character (I get her in character quizzes) but it was just a note to make with the newly added content, is all. I do agree, it probably came across shadier than it needed to be, but I hope folks can see where I’m coming from and know that I still like Rukia as a character. Oh yeah, if you watch Episode 46, I don’t throw away Yhwach’s lines entirely, but I really did not care for his dribble this episode. It’s just not developed enough for my tastes. I’m very cynical when it comes to Yhwach – again, the conclusion in the original manga was SUCH a let down to me 10+ years ago – when I tell you as a reader that was invested in the series for nearly 15 years week to week….but yeah, the power monologue I’ve heard a dozen variations of, and it’s just stale to me. But again, my opinions! We can all have them! 🙂 Ah, that makes sense with the hollow hole so thanks for noting that! That last moment with Orhime and Ichigo is so beautiful, though! I love it!! And no problem, thanks for taking the time to craft that comment – I hope y’all don’t think that I hate a character just because I can be critical of the plot surrounding them – now, Yhwach? Oh yeah, I don’t like his character at all, but I do love Rukia – just the decisions with her were not my favorite, but I see the value of them symbolically and thematically, trust and believe. I love you all sharing different perspectives! So thank you! And glad you’re enjoying Re:Zero as well! That show is GREAT and we’re about to get into some interessssting episodes!

Honestly, this is right up there for favorite in the series for me, too -- though the Ulquiorra vs. Ichigo and then the Aizen reveal are up there as well -- if only they had the animation budge of Studio Pierrot now, haha! But to see Orihime's potential pay off after al that set up was so wonderful! And thank you for the comment and kind words! Seriously, Chad and Ganju -- y'all have made me a ship believer! I can't believe I didn't see it until now!
