Unreal

Im not ready 😭

Andrew

Romania was mad at Subaru for rushing to Emilia’s side at the sight of danger, but with hindsight it was really the right choice because Crusch and Felix think him going would be useless because he is weak, but they don’t know that he has return by death and it is vitally important that he there in times of danger to reset the timeline. If he didn’t go, just checkpoint might reset without knowing and everyone at the mansion would be permanently dead.

Jonas

I think Felix doesn't sense the curse because Subaru is not cursed at this point, they already got rid of the curse he got ffrom those dogs, what Rem smells is the Witch's scent/miasma, "curses" are something different (I think Beatrice explained what defines a curse in a previous episode if I remember correctly). Subaru's whole power/witch connection seems to be something different as far as we've seen. So Felix and Crush are right when they say he isn't cursed, even Rem confirms it by saying she doesn't sense any "Mana interference" but since she is familiar with how he usually smells she can tell the Witch's scent is stronger.

Question for the mods, you've done a good job with everything you've had her watch so far, but how are you planning to handle cut content, especially when we get into season 2. Also IF stories. I think Echidnut's videos are the best for those, but I know it most reactors tend to not touch those. Thanks!

The Sin Archbishop of Sloths name is a reference to the star Betelgeuse but is actually Petelgeuse. The author has mentioned that the fact his name is Petelgeuse and not Betelgeuse has a meaning tied to his backstory that hasn’t been revealed yet. Petelgeuse is such a fantastic character to introduction them with! His insane ramblings are so fun! I love the fact that despite being the Sin Archbishop of Sloth he describes sloth in a negative way. I’ve never seen another story that has the villain representing a sin be adamantly against it instead of embodying/encouraging it. Episode 15 is widely seen as one of the best episodes in Re:Zero and it’s all thanks to Petelgeuse pushing Subaru so far! It’s pretty scary to see Subaru; someone who’s able to care for and love people that have killed him before show so much hate to someone else. Also regarding Felix’s name his real name is Felix but his nickname (that he refers to himself as) is Ferris.

Oh I love this one... One and only thing I feel entitled to the shows ending is Crusch and her boytoy having green-haired cat babies lol. From what I know Felix is his name, Ferris/Felis is his nickname Crusch uses. So, When we assume if Subaru didnt mess things up with Emilia everything would be fine, would that mean its his fault whats happening right now? He is in a bad place saying things like "Emilia is hopeless without me" or "I'm the only one who can save her" and these are wrong...or are they, technically? If he didnt go to the mansion and stayed in the city to heal his gate wouldnt Emilia and everyone else still die? He is in such a situation that makes it harder to not have these thoughts because HE IS the only one who knows what will happen and probably the only one who can stop it, just like he did before numerous times, which he screamed at Emilia in the last episode. Petelgeuse... What a character, what an introduction, what a VA performance... "Your insanity is far too sane" is one of my all time favourite lines. Requiem of Silence is haunting on its own and its used flawlessly in episode 15. Its like the OST was made for that scene which ofc it wasnt :D. And them red credits still give me goosebumps everytime I see this episode, to this day.

sillyspartan

Thankyou for the great reaction. This is my favorite anime episode of all time and made me fall in love with Re:Zero.

Simple explanation about Felix's different spellings: Quite simply, there are no letters for L or X in Japanese; you just have a sound that can be L or R, and another sound that can be S or X So the translators just be wilding out trying to figure out what the English letters should be for the Japanese pronunciation of Felix's name. This happens a few times in this series in the future, where a few characters whose names could start with R or L just change every other sub. Very annoying. We can only hope that someday the subs will make up their dang mind about which is which.

looweewoo

My face looked just like yours the whole time when I first watched this episode.

One of the things I love about this show is the structure and setup. Similar to Steins;Gate, because of the structure it allows us as the audience to experience these worst case scenarios with Subaru and really feel it. Then it resets and it’s like emotional whiplash.

epicgamesbr

IIRC, some characters(more specifically crusch, i believe), use a nickname for him as well which is one of the variations of his name I'm sure some of these 'felix, ferris, felis' are translation things, but one of them at least is a nickname, if i'm not misremembering

That Guy

I saw Feri-chan in a webnovel fan translation too so who knows

Rule of 8 striking true. Don't have much to say except I'm loving the reactions and discussions. I really love having new people who like diving this deep watch the show (I don't even mean in regards to watching stuff like the break times and the date ova - which generally people never watch, but I mean just the amount of dedication with whiteboard-kun and the emptathy to understand the charactrs). It has such good discussion material, and not to disparage others but I've not seen many people on youtube really get into it at this level. Not to be a gloomy guy - I understand that you're a debator at heart, but I geniunely hope that this fandom's tendancy for a certain amount of aggression when met with new opinions never discourages you from continuing. (Not that anything you said in this reaction/discussion deserves all that in my opinion, I just felt like writing this when I saw the amount of comments you have here lol) I know I have had some faults in that regard, since this a series really close to my heart and at times hearing people (in my opinion) mischaracterize certain characters and their feelings/actions makes me want to correct them or show my opinion that I've nurtured for a long time. Though I'm no debator so I never really express those feelings as I know getting pushback would cause me personal pain. I really hope you continue enjoying the show! Please feel free to keep making 2 hour discussions, it makes me so happy for Re:Zero to get such good treatment and I'm absolutely loving them. (okay maybe I did have much to say, oops)

romaniablack

I don't think ANYONE was ready for this week! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

That makes sense with Felix's nickname - thank you for noting all that and for the comment!

romaniablack

There's definitely a lot of factors with everything going on -- it's still worth him thinking about things, because we see the results of him going -- regardless of the checkpoint. Still, a fair point to make - thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

Yes, that's how I sensed it -- that it was the witch's curse and that Rem was smelling it; maybe it didn't come across that way in the discussion, but your comment is basically how I thought it was, and I appreciate the clarification!! Thank you so much!!

romaniablack

Thanks for the comments! I'll let the mods answer this, if they decide to. Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

Thank you for the comment and kind words! This series is really getting so good!

romaniablack

Yessss, it's so fun the same studio is doing both series, because I can see the comparisons between them! It's so good! Thank you for the comments!

The Rule of 8 never lets us down! I’m in full support of Crusch and Felix – 100%! There’s a lot that we still don’t fully know about the set up of events, but yeah, even IF things were going to go the way they did – 1.) He’s not strong enough even with his gate healed to stop the cult; he’s just not unless he’s a Saiyan that gets stronger after dying, so it wouldn’t have mattered. 2.) Just because you’re “technically” right, does not give you an excuse to be a verbally abusive asshole, which is what Subaru was in Episode 7. Hey, it’s “all up from here, though,” right? 😛 Petelgeuse’s introduction is seriously one of my FAVORITES in anime so far – the VA performance is AMAZING. So many good lines as well! And “Requiem of Silence” - such a haunting track! That ending is flawless! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

The Rule of 8 strikes again!! Thank you so much for the comment and kind words – I’m so glad that you’re enjoying the reactions and discussions! I’m super excited to get more into it! Ahh, thank you for the kind words in regards to aggressive comments - I know that some of my opinions are definitely going to be met with disagreement but as long as folks are civil, I’m cool, and the mods are doing a great job of filtering out comments that could be too harsh. I totally get where 99% of folks are coming from and I’m definitely open to changing my mind about characters and scenarios as we go through and get more context! I hope that makes sense! Thank you, again, for the comment and I’m glad that you all enjoy the long rambles on here! I appreciate the support!

Quesa

Hiya, mod here. What do you mean by your question? Are you asking because there's so much cut content? We plan to handle it the same as always, letting Romania choose to read comments that discuss cut content or just have fun facts.

2026-10-02 22:00 I'm late again this week, life's been once again been super busy for me, and a 2 hour banger, which will inevitably take me at least an extra hour or 2 to write stuff up is pretty easy to bump down the priority list (and still good enough that I still want to mention some things). @11:36 So funny story about pachinko parlors. Technically they're not "gambling" by law in Japan. You see, "gambling" (which involves money directly), is fully illegal in Japan (at least until recently, it seems like a proper casino has been let into the country). But a pachinko parlor is a an entertainment business where one can play games for special tokens (that *wink wink* not money). Special tokens that one can exchange for cash at a convenient "independent" business just next door (likely owned by the same people). And then it's not gambling, because the parlor is just an arcade and the exchange is just some highly specialized trinket exchange. Of course it's all total BS and is 100% gambling, but technically by law, it's not considered that way. And that's why in all of the old Pokemon games that have the game corner, you have to go next door to trade your coins for the Pokemon prizes, cause you can't have it in the same building in Japan, cause then it'd be "gambling". And Europe did not like this loophole and so after Gen 3 or so, they basically told Game Freak that they'd lose their PG-3 rating and get bumped up to PG-18 for having simulated gambling, and so Game Freak replaced the Gen 4 game corner with Voltorb Flip in just the international release of HG/SS and phased out the game corner entirely from Gen 5 onwards. It's for the best (especially with how companies are these days with microtransactions), but I do miss being able to pick up a rare pokemon really early in the game. — @40:19 I really like this line: "As long as people see her that way, she's doomed to failure" about Emilia. And I think it ties into what I said last episode about Emilia being feared and that one wise man being convinced that Emilia's isn't how she's been described to be. The truth about Emilia is irrelevant to the masses, what they've (incorrectly) heard is enough for them to want nothing to do with Emilia or even give her a chance. And I feel like the only way to deal with that kind of a situation, is to effectively drag those people (kicking and screaming) into interactions with Emilia, where they can't withdraw, and then they can be forced into a genuine interaction with Emilia and have their mind be changed. Not really a great way to solve it (with you know, the whole unwillingness aspect), but presumably, the only way to change the minds of the people who very clearly don't have any power at all. — @49:38 I love Crusch's quote of "When you do what you know to be right, what can you do by looking downward? Lift your head, face forward, and reach out your hands.". I just find it so concisely captures how to weigh one's morals in comparison to what is presumably, contrary to the group's morals (even if just in perception) and prevents one from being caught in no mans land, where they do enough to piss off the group, and not enough to satisfy themselves, while still leaving room for self doubt that you may actually be the in the wrong. And so if you're sure that you're doing the right thing, then stop listening to the haters and just do the thing. Their commentary has no more value to you once your mind has been made up. And people doing what they think is right (in the face of adversity), is something that I think is very admirable, and is one of the reasons that I abstractly support Subaru's outburst in the Royal Selection, even if he really fucked it up. Cause I'd rather be in a world where people say some crazy shit that they really believe, than one where people bite their tongue for what they know is wrong, even if, some people are gonna try and support some awful stuff (cause it's much harder to attempt to "correct" those beliefs f they don't say them out loud). It reminds me of "I Disapprove of What You Say, But I Will Defend to the Death Your Right to Say It" (Voltaire), though I'm pretty pro "direct communication always" (and such a moral certainly has its downsides). I'd just rather regret saying things than not saying things, for better or for worse. — @1:10:46 Now the question is, is this rock bottom the true rock bottom? Or can the floor still give out some more? (though this will probably be moot by the time you read this). Unfortunately for Suffaru and the nature of RBD, it seems that the fact that any and/or all of the people he cares about could suffer some horrible fate is an occupational hazard for him. — @1:14:47 Maybe this is because I'm American (and thus, am quite aware of the KKK), but it matches up so much that I feel like it has to be intentional. But I really love their design aesthetic. One look at them and it's clear (to me) these are not people you want to be interacting with. Part of me thinks it's arrogant to think that people around the world would know about a strictly American cult, but also part of me thinks that the klan is pretty fucking famous, so it's not that out there. — @1:16:20 Yeah, I really like how they did the slow play of that scene. Like Subaru is clearly in shock the whole time, and the viewer gets kinda a similar feeling of not really processing it (cause they aren't being shown anything). It just so masterfully edges the viewer along with just how bad it really is and the timing of the slow drip. It just provides this really interesting experience where there's so many different points the viewer can put it all together to reveal the horror of it all. I just really love how Re:Zero manipulates the viewer's perception of what's going on. — @1:17:04 If you're interested in the lyrics of the insert song, it's called Theater D (I'm sure you can guess what the D stands for), you might be interested in listening to the whole song with the lyrics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFi4FTOuqKk, lyrics in text form: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/myth-roid-re-zero-kara-hajimeru-i-english). Note, I couldn't find a good version with hard coded subs, so you'll have to enable the captions yourself. Surprisingly, a good chunk of it is in English, though as per usual, Japanese pronunciation is far enough off that it's super easy to not realize that amidst all of the vocal effects going on. I find it feels very Hotel California esque. And like all the Re:Zero insert songs, I find that the lyrics have some relevance to the themes of Re:Zero and the greater scene they appear in. Some food for thought. — @1:24:54 Curses and the Witch stuff are different things in universe (curses are a specific type of magic that Beatrice said earlier required physical touch). — @1:38:28: I'm really glad you caught the "if" there. A lot of people don't really pay it much attention, but Felix (and it has extra weight from a healer) is just like straight up, he might just always be like this from now on. Like, just maybe he'll come out of this coma, don't really know for sure. I think a lot of people would take it for granted (and especially in the modern world), that there would always be a cure. The viewer can pretty reasonably surmise that Subaru won't spend the rest of Re:Zero being a vegetable (though that'd be such a power move to just leave your protagonist comatose and just shift to a different protagonist), but the characters within Re:Zero can't. And I find it a nice detail that bit of meta knowledge doesn't leak into the dialogue. — Re: Petelgeuse. I'm sure others have told you that it's spelled with a P not a B, but I did want to share a little history on the etymology of the star we call Betelgeuse. It was originally named in the Middle East as يد الجوزاء Yad al-Jawzā’ (the hand of al-Jawzā’ [i.e. Orion (the constellation it's in)]), and the scribe who took that name over to Europe (in the 1200s), made a transcription mistake, mistaking يـ (ya) for بـ (ba) (the difference is the loss of a single dot), and so, it became known in Europe as Betelgeuse (and in classic European fashion, became the definitive name). So it wouldn't be the first time that the first letter of that name got butchered. I should also note that this star is also known as Alpha Orionis, when it was "discovered" by Johann Bayer in 1603 (located in Germany, amidst a bunch of other stars). These days, Betelgeuse is considered the "proper name" after astronomers came together in 2016 to standardize star names, and also Bayer designations are less useful now that we found way way way more stars and thus came up with a different way to categorically name stars in less human readable form, so some 17th century dude's list of essentially 1A, 1B, 1C, … doesn't really have much scientific value compared to the cultural value of using the common name it was first given (and butchered). --- Ah, and I almost forgot. In the Chibi shorts, the painting of Roswaal actually moves a little. If you scrub through it, you can see his pupil move to look at Subaru part way through. Idk what this means or could imply, but I feel like even in a Chibi short, paintings shouldn't move!

I'm late again this week, life's been once again been super busy for me, and a 2 hour banger, which will inevitably take me at least an extra hour or 2 to write stuff up is pretty easy to bump down the priority list (and still good enough that I still want to mention some things). Hey, no worries; you put a lot into this comment section, so it’s totally okay taking time to craft them! I appreciate the effort into that, so thank you for this comment! I meannnnn, that’s a pretty round about way to basically be gambling. 😛 But yes, sure, hahaha, still good to know! Thank you for the info on that! I’m glad that now I have the Pokemon Game Corner explained from Blue/Red! 8-year-old me thinking it was basically just a Japanese Chuck E. Cheese, haha!! #themoreyouknow I did love trying to get Dratini that way, though! I definitely agree that poor Emilia needs to have the prejudice against her taken away or at least down a notch if she has any chance to be the ruler of the kingdom. I definitely think of the KKK with them – that’s why I kept saying “Klan” in the discussion, wondering if anyone would get what I was saying. Re:Zero does NOT mess around when it comes to messing and manipulating perspective, yes! Thanks for the link to the lyrics, too! I can totally see the Hotel California comparison - I was getting that vibe throughout the end of the episode, actually. Yes! And yes, I’ll address the whole Petelgeuse situation later. But thank you for all the info on it! Ahhhhh, the painting MOVES?! Nooooooo, no having that at all! *shudders* Thank you so much for the comment! I appreciate it!! 😀 Onwards and upwards, eh?
