*GUARDED HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This was so nostalgic and such a quirky anime with a dash of insanity alongside a mixture of Natsume's Book of Friends and Journal with Witch that I was 100% here for! What a fun film!

Shimoyama has hit it out of the park yet again, as they commission this touching coming-of-age story about grieving and finding faith in others and ourselves!

Loved the reaction and discussion! And what a fortuitous entry in the roster! 🥰 Love that Natsume came up, because I'd originally considered commissioning this film last year once Natsume was done to add a new dimension to the way yokai get presented in media. Various things I loved: How beautifully the small town is rendered! All the yokai shenanigans. 😆 How much we simultaneously got Momo’s emotionality, a slapstick comedy, a family drama AND a slice of life film! Those little wild piglets! Leave them alone 😭 The slapstick shenanigans of the yokai coming up against the reality of Momo’s current situation Not a fan of yet another film in less than a month featuring child-slapping 😭 “While I’ve been microdosing in the woods I’ve met a lot of friends, guys!” 🤣 The ridiculous yokai bus “I can’t remember the rule so maybe I can deliver it for you.” How convenient 😆 Rooting for Koichi! The English language dub is also really great, I highly recommend! This also worked out so beautifully in the schedule because I think this pairs wonderfully with Shoplifters! 🥰 Especially its abundance of themes examining what counts as family, of adults assuming things about the emotionality of children, of the entire social language around so-called 'proper parenting,' of what 'belonging' actually means and how it is supposed to be 'deserved,' etc. Also loved that Journal with Witch came up! 🥰 I would love for Momo and Asa to meet. I love the ways both stories approach the idea of losing a person who was supposed to be so key to the main character trying to figure out who they were 'supposed' to be. Of course, themes of resistance?! Aplenty! 😆 Especially Momo’s resistance to grief. I love for how long the film just lets Momo try to continue 'as normal' in her incredible circumstances as she essentially ignores her true reality. And how gently it illustrates Momo’s attempts to ignore the 'mess' the yokai/grief bring into her life. As well as I think a great illustration of the ways resisting vulnerability harms both Momo and her mother. I agree with how great it was to get closure around that within their relationship AND the letter! Thank you to Shimoyama for yet another amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! Quite Fortuitous indeed! <3 YOKAI SHENANIGANS! YES. I am really missing Natsume’s Book of Friends, so this helped to fill that void just a little bit – can we have Asa, Natsume, and Momo all meet together? What a therapy session that would be! I also love how “in the face of loss, how do we identify” is a central theme in the series. As someone from a small town, I really felt invested in how it was rendered here as well. So many details and so sweet. This film touched on SO many genres; I loved that about it. Nahh, having grown up around pigs - the piglets, sure, let ‘em go…the adult pigs? Nope. Those beasts will maul you! XD Look, not a fan of the slapping, either. The slapSTICK humor, though? Here for that. Seriously, that Yokai Bus and all the Yokai that were from the forest? Pure FEVER dream! And I’m seriously rooting for Koichi as well. That’s good to know the dub is good - I have so many dubs to still watch haha!! You know, this was a GREAT back-to-back with Shoplifters! They actually lined up REALLY well next to one another, so I appreciated that a lot. And yeah, talk of what it means to be a “parent” and what we “deserve” as humans in the face of adversity is really nice. And yessss, Momo’s resistance to grief! I love that like Journal with Witch, the topic of grief is a “come quietly, gently, and then pour a bowl of ice water over you” kind of realism. And yes, I love that note on vulnerability with her and the mom. I honestly was happy with the closure they got with the letter back from the dad. <3 Shimoyama knocked it out of the park with this commission! So excited for the last of September’s commission and October is shaping up to be great! Thank you for the comment and kind words!
