Since we already decided that Marina will be joining the party during Coronado, I've been thinking about how important her role should be in the long run.

As you know, characters like Misha and Astro are meant to stay with us for quite a while. We get to know their original forms, personalities, relationships, and gradually see how their stories develop.

But Marina could be a little different.

One possibility is to make her a long-term companion, giving us plenty of time to get to know her as an Elf before exploring her own transformation and character development.

The other possibility is to make her a Coronado-focused companion, with her own smaller story, transformation, and development during this chapter, before eventually leaving the party to continue her own journey.

I think both options could be interesting...

Having shorter-term companions would also give more freedom to introduce new playable characters in future updates, without making the main party too large.

Poll question:

What kind of companion should Marina be?

Not everyone necessarily needs to stay with Mikaria for months. Some characters could join us for a particular kingdom, have their own little adventure, and then move on.

That would also give us more opportunities to meet new characters and explore different transformations without constantly expanding the permanent party.

Of course, this doesn't mean Marina would be forgotten if she leaves! She could still appear later in the story.

Hope u all have a great weekend! Love u all! 🌴💜

It would be a shame to make such a interesting character only to have her leave the party afterwards. It would be cool to get more companions that players could switch around.

I like the character, but this is a transformation game, and we're here for that. It just makes sense to have companions join, get transformed and then progressively swap out for new characters to transform as the story progresses. Unless they have interesting long term dynamics like Majora, there's really no meta reason to keep them around forever. It also rather stagnates the party, as characters stop learning skills after a while, and just become dependant on repeating the same optimal skills with the only variation being stat boosts with weapons.

There is a duality for me. On one hand, I loved the game Chrono Cross, where you could recruit a massive roster and pick and choose who to use. On the other hand, it is very challenging to write in events that account for every character and can get cluttered. I absolutely hate it when a game takes away a fun character to play, but I do enjoy meeting a character down the line in an "all roads lead to Rome" final push too. I'm going to lean towards recurring, but I wouldn't mind having another party member to equip some items to. It's all up to how pesky future event planning will get if you keep adding new main party members.

The big concern I have with Marina potentially becoming a long-term companion is what happens to Edith? In the original poll, you mentioned potentially rotating Edith out of the party temporarily to make room for Marina during Coronado. If Marina ends up staying for a much longer period, would that mean Edith is effectively being written out of the main party for all that time, or at least receiving significantly less focus than she would have if Marina were only a temporary companion? This poll doesn't really mention this at all, which makes it seem like Marina could simply become an additional long-term companion without any trade off. If that's not the case I feel like this should be clarified as some people might not realise that they are potentially voting to essentially "trade" one companion for another. I'm fine with Marina being temporary, or even staying longer if the existing companions still get the time and attention needed for their own character development. I just wouldn't want a new long term companion to come at the expense of an existing one whose story and potentially transformation still have room to develop. On another note, I do actually prefer the idea of having more temporary companions who join for a particular region or even just a few quests before eventually leaving. I think that could create some really interesting opportunities for transformations and even bad ends that might not be possible with more permanent companions. For example, I can imagine a temporary companion joining for a particular quest or series of quests, only to end up transformed and corrupted during it, potentially leaving the party or even becoming an enemy you have to fight. Kind of similar to Yarel but smaller scale and more self contained with the player actually getting to know and travel alongside the character during those quests. I'm not saying that's necessarily what should happen to Marina specifically, since there are plenty of other interesting directions her character could take. I just agree with the stance that temporary companions could offer a lot of storytelling possibilities without needing every new character to become a permanent addition to the party. ^^

I'd like to see her content restricted to the ship. But there's some pretty interesting options that would allow for. For instance, we could have the party bring something on the ship that triggers a transformation, or various things over time that result in a chimera transformation. Or it could be a corruption situation where every time we move to a new location we see her corruption and transformation progressing. Both options would allow for segmented content that would hopefully not get in the way of main story development too much.
