Welcome to the Blue Pumpkin demo. In this real-time watercolor recording, I showcase my complete painting process featuring Forest Blue, a super-granulating pigment from Schmincke. This is a relatively quick two-layer painting, taking around 1.5 hours (not including drying time between layers). Unlike fully narrated tutorials, this video is for demonstration purposes only and does not include a voice-over. 🌺 Enjoy!

🎨 To help guide you, black-and-white outlines, photo references, and step-by-step photos are included below. The reference for this blue pumpkin, called the Blue Doll, was generously provided by Brian from Blue Pumpkin Seed Co.

🍁 If you are interested in seeing a fully narrated watercolor tutorial for this technique, a larger 3-Pumpkin composition featuring the same Blue Pumpkin, is available on my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/141745387

A FEW NOTES:

VoiceoverAs with all of my demo compositions, there is no voice-over included since these are my own creative exercises. These pieces feature many experimental pigments and techniques that later become the foundation for my detailed Patreon tutorials. However, there is a brief YouTube video where I narrate key parts of the painting process.

MaterialsI used a variety of blues and oranges in this piece to test different combinations. You don't need this entire range of colors—or even the Forest Blue specifically. Feel free to use any granulating pigment (for example Lunar Blue from Daniel Smith), or skip granulation altogether, and instead focus on layering to build depth and dimension. I always encourage experimentation with what you have on hand.

CompositionThe final composition is loosely based on the references below. While the photos are a starting point, I free-handed the drawing and added my own interpretation of the organic shapes. So, the result may differ from the photos in some areas.

🎨 WATERCOLOR SUPPLIES:

PAPER: Arches Cold Pressed 140lbs 100% cotton paper, 7 x 9 inches {could be sized up to 10 x 14}

BRUSHES:  You will need at least 2 round pointed brushes: Larger {sizes #3-4} for big washes, and smaller {#00-01} for finer details. I am using a larger Winsor & Newton Series 7 in size #4, some old Raphael and Escoda brushes.

Pencil 2-4H and eraser.

Is there an outline for this?

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Lisa! Yes, I just added the outline - it's at the bottom. Thank you!

Lisa

Thank you, my drawing skills aren't the greatest. Love this picture.

Vikki

Anna - I don't see where you added the outline. At the bottom, I see the pigments you used.

Anna Bucciarelli

Vikki, it’s in the usual spot - in the attachment area, under the pigments 😊

cindy

Oh I love this one. Can't wait to start it. Thank you Anna!!

Anna Bucciarelli

Enjoy!! 🧡 I have sooo many more fall themed “objects” coming up 😉 mushrooms, squirrells, pinecones…

cindy

Awesome. I have been in a huge rut the last month and haven't picked up a brush. I need this inspiration to get me moving again. Big thanks for all you do.

Anna Bucciarelli

Oh I think you will find the upcoming “medley” sketch session enjoyable. It’s just tiny fall objects, very easy (compared to my larger compositions) and you can pick and choose which one to do 😊 I’ll post a snapshot this weekend. I’ve also been in a bit of rut with kids and myself getting sick, so this should be a good warm up!

Diana

I too can’t find the outline at the end of the list of pigments. Can’t wait to start. Thanks for the beautiful picture.

Anna Bucciarelli

Are you seeing other attachments? I am not doing anything different from my usual process… this is frustrating - maybe try to click “show more” the links should be there, I see them on my end. There are 7 attachments. Thank you!

jk.art.studio

Hi Anna. Can Indigo be substituted for the Blue Lake pigment if I don’t have it? I know Indigo isn’t granulating but I think it may work in this instance.

Essebi

Wonderful!! Anna could I ask you how many drops of medium do you usually put in the water in order to maintain the paper wet all the time you need? I just bought w&n medium, here in Italy I couldn ‘t find qor… thanks a lot 💜

jk.art.studio

On my previous comment, I meant to say Forest Blue instead of Blue Lake.

Anna Bucciarelli

I can see it work - Indigo is quite dark so I would go slow. Another alternative to consider is Ultramarine (it’s granulating) or maybe even mixing Indigo with Ultramarine (I am speculating at this point 😊 but I would try it). Maybe test on scrap paper first just to get the values right and see how dark it looks when it dries out. Let me know how it turns out!

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Essebi! I would use -3 drops in a 300ml jar. Less is more - it tends to affect the paint when too concentrated. 😊

jk.art.studio

Thank you Anna for your reply! I decided to use Lunar Blue from Daniel Smith which looks strikingly similar to the Forest Blue. I’m looking forward to your next Fall themed video!!

Anna Bucciarelli

Ahhh yes I just looked at it (I only have a drop on my old Daniel Smith dot chart) it does look soo similar 😍

Kimberly Gipson

How do you keep your paper so wet for so long? It seems to be staying wet forever!! I do live in a dry climate, so I'd love to know how you do that

Bell and Kuma

can you please check out this color. It looks way more green than yours. https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/Schmincke-14943001-Horadam-Granulation-Forest/dp/B08W1WCNV7/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1VT2OCB34O6OT&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.3R0Zd0MILwc-X1_2obOYQreydFmDiIKZyHJioE9HAlAEJSodN1lnl00nPoW8cVshbudbNuTJ7k_7m6jrtkdQ70z7-7nSJ8LNdTgpxKl_L3Wqs1n78ZdQdDH9Ta55RmZWHDUIKIOJRCeJQa9VlT9vIfcnHeVGzQyRTBErOSW9di0KlJ7eA1i_erxYjwQSjf-MZhV-BFn2uz0VEhhZ9XaZwPdpMVrQ44O_v8xtkG5Y0zk0xwAMXLDHGk6dnO7pbrHXobhWGXOljsONJaYOR1gMxio55ueuKhUWv9lj3GkEnvE.TxksIl_4YW3U9DNMic4Mk6Lh7qmm1uYKFSgdJzB-jbc&dib_tag=se&keywords=Schmincke%2Bforest%2Bblue%2Bwatercolor&qid=1726355491&sprefix=schmincke%2Bforest%2Bblue%2Bwatercol%2Caps%2C188&sr=8-1&th=1

Anna Bucciarelli

This is not the one I used. Seems like a mistake - if you zoom in closely on the picture it says Forest Green on the tube. They must have mislabeled the listing 😊

Dana Hirst

Thank you for this, Anna! I did it and it came out beautiful because your tutorials are so great!

Dana Hirst

I used lunar blue by daniel smith for the granulating color and surprisingly it was almost identical to the Forest Blue.

Anna Bucciarelli

That's so interesting, I just looked up the specs: Forest Blue is a mix of PB36, PBk11 while Lunar Blue is a combo of PBK11 PB15, so both use different blues and blacks for a similar result:) Thank you!

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Kimberly, Great question! Here i a simply using Arches cold pressed paper - it stays wet for a long time. When the air is particularly dry, I use a few drops of Synthetic Ox Gall - it extends the drying time. I have a video about this on Youtube: https://youtu.be/LxyZ4a_YzSQ

Ingrid

What can I use instead of Schmincke forest blue. I just have the colors from Daniel Smith and W&N colors.

Ruth Heaton

Loved this beautiful pumpkin tutorial...thank you!

Connie

Hi Anna! This is a beautiful painting and great tutorial! My favorite pumpkin in any patch😊 I , too, ave trouble keeping my paper wet, Arches included. Would Ox Gall be a good thing for me to have around? I live in rainy, humid Seattle, WA. Maybe I should paint outside in Fall and winter😳

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Connie, I think Ox Gall would be worth it. It's not too expensive and lasts for ages. It's funny - we live in a fairly rainy city, but it's the air conditioning I think that dries everything out. I mostly use my Ox Gall in the summer and also for particularly large washes, but its always good to have on hand :)

Connie

Thank you, Anna! I love learning about new tools that will improve/ help my “forever improver” level of painting😊 I do love your work! This pumpkin has become an obsession to me in the Fall. Can’t wait to hive this one a try!!! “

Darcey

I am new to Patreon. Will this demo later become a full length tutorial or do you do a mixture of demos and tutorials? I’m trying to decide whether to try this one or wait. I loved the chipmunk tutorial!!

Deborah J Anderson

Hi Anna, there are no attachments showing for me. There is no referrence photo. Please advise. Thanks you!

Anna Bucciarelli

Hi Deborah, The attachments are posted below the video description - please scroll all the way down and click "show more" as it may be hidden if you are viewing via the app. Thank you!

Anna Bucciarelli

Welcome Darcey! I just recently started sharing demos (without voice over) by popular demand, but I mostly focus on in-depth teaching-style tutorials. You can see the full library in the Index post here on Patreon, and here: https://www.annabucciarelli.com/Demos are a lot less "structured" compared to tutorials, and I don't repeat them exactly as tutorials, but I do incorporate elements of what I liked / pigments I liked into more in-depth videos later. For example, I might use this granulating blue + techniques I tried later in a different subject as a tutorial with voiceover, but I won't repeat the same composition. Thank you!

jk.art.studio

Lunar Blue from Daniel Smith is almost identical to the Forest Blue! Also, it’s more affordable!

Ros Riggs

I watched this tutorial and I think it's fabulous. So all enthused I went to the local store to check out blueish pumpkins, and yes, there were some, but without the stalk part...the variety I saw were more squat but indeed blueish. So I shall definitely try out this exercise and then give it a go on my own... with the squat pumpkin. Thank you Anna.

Deborah J Anderson

Hi Anna, I see what the issue is and wanted to let you know, in case someone else asks. When I log into Patreon and it goes to Patreon's "Home" page, it shows your tutorials and videos and everything up to Watercolor Pigments. There are no attachments there. To be able to see the attachments with the outlines, etc., I have to access your tutorials by clicking on your name under my memberships and when I go in that way, that's where they are showing. Which makes sense to me now that it would work that way, lol. Thank you for all the great tutorials! I hope you are having a nice weekend.

Ingrid

Thank you.

Anna Bucciarelli

Thank you for letting us know Deborah! This is very helpful to know - I'll keep it in mind in case the issue comes up again.

Anna Bucciarelli

Thank you - I'll add Lunar Blue to the list of alternatives in the description :)

Anna Bucciarelli

Ingrid, I would give Lunar Blue Daniel Smith a try - on my dot chart Lunar Blue does look very close. If you don't want to invest in super-granulating paints, regular Ultramarine Blue (any brand) has significant granulation so you can use it as well. The only exception I am aware of is Ultramarine Finest from Schminke - its designed specifically not to granulate. Another alternative would be Cascade Green - lovely bluish green from Daniel Smith with subtle granulation.

Ingrid

Anna, thank you for your prompt and informative response. I love your tutorials. I am learning enormously.

jk.art.studio

Which color did you drop into the pumpkin near the lanterns please? It looks red but there is no red paint in the description. Thank you!

Anna Bucciarelli

It must have been one of the warmer Quinacridone’s - most likely Quin Coral or Quin Red 😊

Sammie Bryant

This is the best painted pumpkin I've seen. It is obviously a favorite of many. I was so hoping for a full tutorial. I hope that one day you do a similar pumpkin as a tutorial, it's so gorgeous!

Anna Bucciarelli

Thank you Sammie, the composition I am working on at the moment will be a full tutorial and it features the same blue pumpkin:)

Sammie Bryant

You made my day. It's silly I know, it's just a pumpkin but it's one of my favorite pumpkin paintings ever. It's just so different, love the look and am excited about the tutorial. Thanks so much❣️
