If you’ve followed my watercolor tutorials, you already know how much I love weaving organic forms into thoughtful, detailed compositions. When I’m not painting, my creative world revolves around drawing elaborate, miniature artworks — and these compositions are often etched onto Canadian gold and silver coins.

Which brings me to one of my latest (and most exciting!) projects—my newest design for the Royal Canadian Mint! Legacy of the Crown is a commemorative $350 Canadian coin featuring six iconic royal effigies, each representing a monarch whose profile has graced Canadian currency since Confederation. Surrounding these noble portraits are stately botanical emblems that I lovingly (and maybe a little obsessively) illustrated over what felt like a million hours and a million coffees. Picture tiny leaves, regal flourishes, and enough intricate detail to make even a palace corgi pause in admiration. 🙂

✨ A rare peek behind the scenesFor those of you who love process and detail, I’m also sharing a few rare behind-the-scenes shots from my sketchbook and iPad —early concepts, pencil drafts, and compositional planning (see attached). It’s not often I get to show this side of my coin work, so I hope you enjoy this look into how these miniature designs come to life.

🪙 View the finished coinsThe gold version of the coin has already sold out, but you can still purchase the silver version directly from the Royal Canadian Mint:

If you’re a fan of coins, Canadian history, or just really, really detailed miniature artwork, I think you’ll enjoy this one.

Thanks for letting me share this special milestone with you!

Definitely an honour! Such amazing and intricate detail - it must have taken you forever! An interesting choice in the line-up of monarchs - it seems that as Edward V111 is not included, he wasn't on the throne long enough to make it onto a Canadian coin, just as he didn't here in Australia. Now here's a thought - perhaps the Canadian Government will present one of the gold coins to King Charles when he visits Canada later this month! Here's hoping!

It's a master piece Anna, once again. Congratulations, your hard work paid off. And? Did King Charles III receive one when he lately visited Canada? All my love, Marianne
