Thank you so much to everyone who commented on the little sketchbook bunnies I shared recently — overwhelmingly, it sounded like the brown bunny was your favorite, so I decided to repaint it as a full tutorial for Patreon 🌸🐰

For our Easter project, we’ll be painting a sweet brown bunny with a few soft apple blossoms in the background for an extra touch of spring charm. It’s a lovely subject for practicing realistic fur with watercolor, while also exploring how soft underpainting and delicate detail can help create a painting that feels warm, fluffy, and full of life.

For this tutorial, we’ll need: Gold Ochre (or any warm yellow or ochre), Burnt Sienna (or any favorite brown), Dioxazine Purple, Phthalo Blue, Indigo, and Quinacridone Red. You can absolutely substitute with your favorite reds or corals — and maybe even add a little splash of Opera Pink for extra spring sweetness. Together, these colors create beautiful warm browns, soft pinks, and natural spring shadows.

🐰🩷 I can’t wait to share the full tutorial with you next week — I hope painting this little bunny brings you a bit of quiet spring joy.

Hi Phyllis - thank you so much, and please don’t worry at all about Gold Ochre. We only need a tiny touch of warm yellow in the first step, so any warm yellow will work beautifully. You could even use something like Hansa Yellow Deep if you’d like a slightly more golden look. None of these colors are absolute must-haves, and when I publish the video, I’ll be sure to include plenty of alternatives.
