New here and so excited! Finally trying watercolor after always doing oils. Such a different beast to tackle! But I collect rare anthurium plants and woulf love a good way to paint them and i want to eventually make my own botanical journal of them. I am really curious on what youre top tip would be for painting dark velvet plant leaves? Some of mine can be borderline black. But for now im gonna be very happy just playing with learning the basics and starting to truly understand this medium!

Welcome, welcome Danielle! πŸ’– I'm so happy you're here! Coming from oils to watercolor really is like learning a whole new language. Watercolor asks you to think in reverse of what you're probably used to (working light to dark, planning your highlights before you paint rather than adding them at the end), but that shift is also what makes it such a magical medium once it clicks! Exploration phase is one of the most fun parts:) What a wonderful subject you have in your anthuriums! Rare and unusual plants make for such striking botanical studies, and I love that you're dreaming of your own botanical journal. That's a beautiful long-term goal to grow into as your skills develop. For those dark, velvety leaves that go almost black, my top tip is to glaze and build your layers very slowly. 4, even 5 layers! Resist the urge to mix one dark, saturated puddle and go for it in one pass. Instead, let each thin layer dry completely before adding the next, gradually deepening the value with multiple glazes. This slow build is what gives you that rich, velvety depth without the color going muddy or flat, and it also means you keep full control over where your highlights stay preserved. Once you paint over a highlight, you can't easily get it back, so working up slowly gives you the chance to stop exactly where you want. To help you explore the basics and start browsing what's available, here's my full Collections tab, organized by theme so you can find whatever calls to you: https://www.patreon.com/c/annabucciarelli/collections Happy painting! Thank you so much for the response! Excited to spend the next few months following tutorials and really starting to understand things well before trying to do my own thing πŸ˜‚ But thanks to your free youtube tutorials I got the proper paper and better paints and realized how massive the paper upgrade is 😱 so finally feels like a realistic avenue to explore! I always thought i was jist terrible at watercolor πŸ˜‚ Also, if you ever wana do a striking black and red style velvet anthurium leaf tutorial id be happy to supply reference photos πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
